The city itself is quite beautiful, but the museum is a bit eerie. It's amazing to see a Roman bathhouse and the intricacies of it, but it's nothing spectacular. I definitely love this piece of history, but I'd rather see other parts of the city and admire the Georgian architecture... it's up to your preference. UNDERWHELMING I enjoy history, and so was a bit surprised at my reaction. Very little remains of the Roman ruins (most of the site was built relatively recently). You're not allowed to touch the water. The site is cramped and crowded. (They lend kid carriers, gratis.) The audio guide numbering and signage is confusing. (The bonus commentary by Bill Bryson is OK.) We may have preferred the tour. Neat exhibits: tombstone of the armorer for the 20th Legion, and a hands-on demo of the benefit of a block-and-tackle. Looking back, perhaps I was distracted by trying to keep track of our kid and group, amidst the crowds. I may have also been comparing the site to Pamukkale, Turkey, site of the ancient city of Hierapolis. There, you could *swim* in beautiful ancient mineral hot springs, then come upon a toppled column in the lagoon, and feel as if you'd discovered Atlantis. read more

If you go to the city of Bath, your probably there mainly to see the roman baths lol. This beautiful historical touristy attraction is def worth seeing.This summer because the weather was good it was MAD PACKED. I don't think the audio tour is necessary if you read up about it the night before in your hotel room. Its always good to read up before going places because you see a different light of the place than people going there knowing nothing beforehand. And audio tours usually make it hard to enjoy the place due the fact that your multitasking trying to listen and look. Its just not the same. The middle section is the main attraction.Oh, and don't taste the tap water lol, bad idea. This place is connected to the pump room next door so getting some high tea so i recommend waking up early and going to see the roman bath first so the weather is nicer and its less packed and then have afternoon tea/lunch at the pump room after. We deliberated about paying the £14 per person to visit the Roman Baths but we were so glad we did! It's so amazing inside! So much history. The museum is very well laid out inside with seats every so often should you need a rest. My only qualm is that the audio guide became extremely overwhelming. It was too much information to digest and in the end I just stopped listening. You could easily spend half a day here, although when we got our tickets the lady said 1.5 hours. If you are a fan of history and are able to be amazed by times effects (or lack there of) on structures this is the place for you. Skipping along some 2000 year old tiles while gazing into the eyes of sculptured gods, the first thing you notice is the fact that everything is still standing! Not only standing, but to have a structure with all its plumbing built 2000 years ago and still running strong?! Impossible our builders say! These pools, saunas, baths, and pools continue to function properly proving that the days of quality building work is no longer standard. Sad really, but absolutely beautiful. Buy the Saver Ticket to the Roman Baths and Fashion Museum (valid for 7 days) for £15.50 in order to save a few quid and really enjoy your day. read more

Well worth the ticket price. We paid £12, which includes an optional audio tour guide. The site is massive, and you can easily spend an hour+ wandering the cavern like spaces, which have loads of modern/interactive/fascinating stops. Very small children might be bored but 7+ should retain interest. They really delve into Roman life, including video footage of daily life in the baths and surrounding area. They also have in-dress character actors that hang out as though spending the day there and whom you can speak to about Roman-y stuff. They have loads of pieces uncovered including ancient coins, jewellery, scrolls and curses thrown or lost in the water. Absolutely fascinating. It's such an impressive feat, and I think the curators/designers of the museum have done an excellent job making that clear, comprehendible and interesting to modern-day visitors. read more

Part of a bus tour we took included the Roman Baths, Windsor Castle and Stonehendge. The Roman Baths are located in Bath, north of London in Bath and North East Somerset. It's a famous ancient relic where you can purchase water from their springs to drink for 50 pence. The tour of the baths will take approx 2 hrs and there are 2 levels. The lower level is where the bathing took place as ancient Romans would sit in these huge steaming communal pools and soak and chatted up their fellow politicians and Romans and debated the ongoings of their government and lives. Of course, the water now looks greenish and dirty and would not entice me to go bathing. (Nor are you allowed as it's a world heritage site) You can feel the steam in one of the inside exhibits. Kind of nice to actually see a Roman bath that you used to read about or watch on TV (Ben Hur, anyone?) but not a must-do again if I were to come back. Bath, however, is a lovely place and if not for the limited time we had, I would've loved to explore the town more. It's a lovely town with a population of approx 80K and lots of Bed & Breakfast inns. It's nestled below mountains and covered with trees and grass. read more

I had a good time here. I would have liked to see more of Bath instead of spending so much time in here...but I didn't realize how limited my time would be. The Roman Baths are Bath's main attraction. I suggest going earlier before the tourist busses roll in later in the day, we saw the line grow a lot. The baths themselves are interesting. The site can be walked around fairly quickly. However the self-guided tour provides very interesting insight in the the history and use of the baths. A little pricey but interesting site. This is one of those places that you really have to be able to appreciate. It's amazing to see the ingenuity they had in creating these baths, using a natural hot spring. The engineering and history behind this place is pretty interesting. I also liked learning about the temple part of the baths. At £11, this isn't one of the most expensive heritage sites I've been. If you're visiting Bath, you should definitely go see it, as this hot water spring is the reason why Bath exists at all. The audio guide is quite interesting, if disturbingly complex with about 3 or 4 possible guides to listen to. One famous guy, one normal tour, one for non-english speakers (?), and one for kids. I'm not even sure I got that right, or that I heard all the items as the signs weren't always very prominently displayed. It was also insanely crowded (it was a bank holiday weekend) and I got claustrophobic after a while. It's a small space! The roman baths are definitely something to see. They've done a good job of preserving as much as they could, and explaining it on the audio guide as well, as slow as that was (and always is). The highlight for me was the small display case full of curses that the various faithful had thrown into the spring for the Goddess (Minerva Sulis) to grant their wishes for retribution when things were stolen. It was a revelation to see that it was not just a Bath, but also a temple to a Goddess, and that it attracted the faithful for prayers, not just for the practical reason of bathing. I would definitely recommend a visit, and do pay attention to the audio guide. The original one has more historical information, but the famous guy's one is easier to listen to (less boring, really). read more

A lot of steps, so not for the infirm and children tire easily. Loved the "classically" dressed re-enactors with their scripted demonstrations and display. Especially the witty, attractive young lady with the cosmetics. Suggest you, at least, buy the combined ticket for the Roman Baths (Aqua Sulis) and the Assembly Rooms. The Roman Baths is one of the historical places that we had visited as a part of our Viator tour. The tour included an audio tour and if you want to wait, there's a free guided tour also. The place is pretty well preserved considering its age. You could smell that the place is ancient but that is expected. The entrance was pretty nice with some domed ceilings. I guess I just didn't care much for the roman bath that much. The location of the Roman Bath is absolutely magnificent. I'd give this a five stars!!! The cobblestone walkways remind me of being in Italy. The backdrop of the Roman Abbey. The little shops and cafes around the area are quaint. There are other must sees in the area including the Jane Austen Centre and the Pulteney Bridge (constructed from the 1770s). read more

Stunning! We paid a visit to the historical Roman Baths while we were in town for a wedding. We arrived on a Sunday at noon, which was perfect because the line moved very fast. (We walked by again much later in the afternoon and there were hordes of people in line spilling to the outside). At first, I wasn't going to opt for the audio tour (I kind of hate audio tours; I like to read and do my own thing and don't usually pay for them), but because it was free, I took one. It was actually very convenient (you would just type the corresponding number into the handset from the display and you could stop and start it at any time). The Baths were simply amazing, and quite large and expansive. There was so much to look at read and listen to that we spent far more time there than we had anticipated. They even had a few actors dress up as ancient Romans to entertain the children. This is definitely a must-do while in Bath! read more

This is a place I've wanted to see for years and it didn't disappoint. Access was easy. The museum and bath exhibits are well designed. It is educational without being pedantic or boring. The ruins were easy to get around and showed off the remains and history well. The guides were also friendly and helpful. Personally I found the computer animation to take away from the experience but others seemed very impressed. The Roman Baths are incredible - I visited them for the first time this year and I'll definitely be travelling to Bath to see them again. Seeing the waters gently steaming in the pools is really special and they have done everything possible to give you a flavour of what it was like. I loved the images projected on the walls around the pool showing bathers in traditional Roman costume, and the actors dressed in period costume, and there's tonnes of detaied information and Roman artefacts. I also liked the new Bryson at the Baths feature where popular author Bill Bryson gives you his views on various aspects of Roman life at the baths. Then you can go to the elegant Pump Room for afternoon tea and sample the hot waters. They do taste a little strange but I enjoyed them - and after a couple of glasses a couple of days in a row, my cold was virtually cured - so maybe there's something in it after all! read more

I have to say I wasn't expecting too much from visiting the Baths (which of course when in bath has to be done) but what a pleasant surprise, I stayed for a good 3 and a half hours here following the audio tour which was very interesting. I recommend you follow Bill Brysons audio tour, it's great. The Bath complex was much bigger than I had imagined too from the outside and is very well laid out for the visitor with ample opportunity to take photos. I found out the colour of the water is green because of the algae as it is open air. Back in Roman times it was clear as the baths were indoors. At £11 per adult its also cheaper than a lot of comparable days out at historic sites. read more

Having been before and listened to the adult tour (and you can listen to some Bill Bryson audio, too), we went at half-term with our four kids and listened to the Children's version - MUCH better, unless you're a real history buff. Just the right amount of information, brings the place to life and kept 7-11 year olds amused for a good hour-and-a-half, asking lots of questions. The shop has a lot of the general rubbish you find at all tourist attractions these days, but also a good selection of child-friendly roman-esque bits and lots of books. Free for Bath residents, with a Discovery card, means we can pop back whenever we like without it costing a fortune, as the proces are quite steep for other visitors. read more

We have always wanted to see the baths but were so amazed at how the tour was set up. We really liked that you could sit by the water and be in the same place the Romans had been so long ago. We also like the videos playing so you got a sense of placement within the space. Also thank you SOOOO much for those little beeps at the end of each segment of the audio tour. We had been using those devices at other places around England and had been commenting that we thought the dialogue just ended. The beeps help us know where the end was. My only suggestion is that there needs to be more signs about not touching the water. Thanks again for a great time and so glad the excavation is on going. :-) read more

The Roman Baths Being a resident of Bath I visit the Roman Baths on a regular basis. It can get very congested in the summer but in the winter it ideal for a sauna or steaming session. If you don't like crowds then mid-morning is a good time and allow an hour for your visit. read more

The Roman Baths are a must if you are visiting the city. From the outside you don't get a true flavour of whats inside; the outside is Victorian, the inside contains the original Roman remains of the baths. I recommend you get the audio guide (you can hire them inside) and you walk about the main central bath area and the adjoining rooms containing Roman artifacts and explanations of how the baths works and were laid out. If you like in Bath (and can prove it!) you can visit for free. read more

Much better than I thought it would be. I expected a small puddle with a few bricks around it and a bunch of toga-wearing part-time actors charging to take pictures with them. What you actually get is a really well-preserved look into Britain's Celtic and Roman past. The audio guide opens up a whole new dimension to the place; it will teach you more than you can learn in any of the London museums. You can even drink some of the spring water before you leave, even though it does taste like it flows straight from Andre the Giant's armpit. If you're in Bath then you have to visit (partly because there isn't much else to do there). read more

This is one of the 'must see' attractions of Bath - it's an interesting ancient bathing centre used first by ancient Brits - then the Romans (who built it up and installed lead plumbing and all mod - cons) - finally the Victorians made their mark and from the outside all you can see really is the victorian facade and statutes. There was an orchestral trio playing there in the Pump room and we took tea and scones while being serenaded...all very gentile and rather charming. The Baths are well worth a tour. read more

I'm a history teacher and Rome is one little portion of the info that we cover...so while I was NOT feeling well, I was not about to miss the Baths in Bath! They have done a fantastic job with walking you thru so much information...so that whether you have a background in this era or not, you come away with such a better appreciation for this area of England. I love to look up an see several generations of achitecture standing so close to each other. Its hard to fathom the Romans even comprehending what would follow on the grounds of their beloved baths. It really gives me goosebumps to reflect on walking in the steps of so many in history...while there were kids there, and I think the youngest ones couldn't possibly grasp the timeline, the people role playing and the special soundtracks would make this an exhibition for all. If I lived near here, I know I would make more trips to take more in. I hope the residents don't ever lose the wonder of what they have so close at hand. read more

this place is really cool. do the free audio guide so you can hear all the history. the place is well-preserved and beautiful. w/ your ticket, you get a free glass of spa water to drink, which is apparently a natural laxative. it's not as gross-tasting as i thought it would be. then again, i'm not even sure if it's real spa water. read more
