Everything good that everyone else has said about this place is true. Last time I was here, mumblety-mumble years ago, none of this infrastructure existed. I wasn't really prepared for just how much this museum-cum-site has to offer - and how much of my Tourism Day it would take! The baths themselves are the least of it. There's room after room of excavated material from ear picks to coins to inscribed stellae and of course the spectacular remains of the temples and bathing chambers. All very clearly and intelligently explained by the audio guide - and you can also choose to listen to the occasional observation by Bill Bryson! I regret that because of time constraints we didn't take the final 45-minute live tour of the final bits. My one complaint is that we rushed past the Pump Room, and by the time we were finished downstairs, it was closed, which was very frustrating. And in fact, they've chosen to privilege the Roman baths over the Regency ones, though that bit is under renovation so that could be temporary. read more

Avoid the crowds, visit on a weekday in Winter! My visit last month was my second. The museum is constantly being updated and improved - some archaelogy is still taking place. I found the Roman Baths more impressive than expected - allow a couple of hours as there is quite a bit to see, and don't forget to taste the waters afterwards in the Pump Room (free). One thing I did notice was that the smell of sulpher had pretty well disappeared. This was very noticeable during my visit 20 years ago especially near the site of the springs but also when I tasted the water in the pump room. Seems that the mineral content of the water has changed over the years. read more

Visited April 2015: "Took a trip back to another time" We located a car park, but slightly got lost on the walk towards Bath. The Roman Baths were supplied with videos of the restoration of the exhibit, had several artifacts from the original Roman bath, history of the Bath, and a gentleman dressed up as a Roman citizen. We were able to see several different types of bath houses during the tour. I loved seeing the heat coming up from the water, and being able to observe the bubbles coming up from the hot spring. I was a bit surprise how musty spelling the ruins were. At some times I was overwhelmed with the smell of dirt. You were also able to have a taste of the water. I found the mineral water smelt like sulfur and had a metal taste to it. read more

This is completely Shania Twain, "it don't impress me much." Do you like being shoved through a little muesum like cattle? Do you like smelly water? If you said yes to these questions, you'll love this place! I don't plan on going back. The town that surrounds the area is nice, with lots of little shops. Id rather walk around town, then go through the baths again. read more

You can have an audioguide for free. There were people dressed in Roman costumes, there's so much to learn, children would find it enjoyable. Ummm. It costs £20 to enter and there's really not much to it. As an attraction, I found it confusing. It's a ruin, but it's really difficult to tell what it is you're looking at other than the old pools from the Roman times. They built a new museum structure on top of the ruins, so you kind of go in and out of this newer construction and can't get a real sense of what the baths were like. Also it's crowded as all hell in there. Not fun. read more

When you come to Bath, you've got to come inside the Roman Baths, which gives the city it's name. It's an engineering marvel to think that the Romans were able to utilize the hot springs to make a "bath". The visit itself, is a bit much. The tour is informative, but if you're short on time and just want to see the space, it's not that marvelous. The main bath is interesting, because you can get a feel of the space and architecture, the ruins are pretty meh. The best part is the end, you actually get to drink the water. You can taste the minerals, for me mainly the iron, tasted like when you lick your own blood from a cut. read more

This is an excellent place to visit. You can spend a couple hours here. It was quite crowded but that's not a huge issue.

You can feel like you're stepping into a time capsule here and the venue ifs breathtaking. There were three groups of school kids and large groups of tourists breaking the rules when I went though and the portable guides were informative but very slow. Do you like pennies? Do you like the taste of a tepid glass of water filled with pennies? That's what the water at the Roman Baths will taste like if you are brave enough to sample a glass. Dont' say you weren't warned. It is worth the experience. The baths themselves are lovingly restored and wonderfully laid-out, as you are taken on a tour through the history of the baths from pre-Roman times to eighteenth century rehabilitation to modern tourism. The museum is well worth a visit, and even teh aforementioned coperwater is fun to say you tried. read more

Do not miss this attraction, but be prepared to queue! We managed to arrive about 2 hours before closing time on a Friday and walked straight in but all the other times we passed, the queues were snaking around the building. The audio tour is thorough and I have to admit after the first half hour I started skipping bits cos otherwise I don't think I'd have had time to see everything, you need plenty of time to absorb all the information and to let your imagination develop. It was totally fascinating though, to be that close to history, to touch the stones that countless feet have walked over and to marvel at the amazing beauty that the Roman residents of Aquae Sulis would have seen as an everyday sight. It was much, much bigger than I had imagined with detailed displays of Roman artefacts and a wealth of historical information about life in Roman Britain and the day to day life of bathers and temple-goers. My only complaint was that it was full of student groups who obviously had no interest in being there and were in the most disrespectful of those visitors that actually wanted to learn the history, but again, with the time of day we visited, the crowds all but disappeared after about 45 minutes and we were left to wander and absorb the atmosphere in almost complete solitude. Quick tip : if you buy a ticket for the open top bus tours you get a discount on your entry fee and the bus tours are also well worth the money! read more

Our tour included a stop in Bath, and a stop for a tour in the Roman Baths. It was really busy, so we grabbed the hand held audio and attempted to see what we could through the strollers, and toddlers and tons of tourists. This was actually a really cool historical area and I wish we had more time to really delve into the history. You could easlily spend a half day here. This is a must when in Bath. read more

As part of a day-tour (Stonehenge, Salisbury, Bath) a visit to the Roman Baths was the "highlight" of our stop in Bath but I have to say the town of Bath was actually the bigger delight Bath itself has a huge Jane Austen connection - She paid two long visits here towards the end of the eighteenth century, and from 1801 to 1806 Bath was her home. Also referenced in Northanger Abbey & Persuasion. So you got Roman Baths, Jane & beautiful countryside to temp you! We were not really impressed by the Roman Baths - the history of it all is indeed impressive - actual Roman Baths & original building structures, mineral water source still pumping, frescoes, etc.... But guess the main drawback was the accompanying audio tour. Found it confusing & did not lead us in a rational progression of info & tour sites. Also the place was way too crowded which made it hard to stop & look around Also - to all the people drinking directly out of the Mineral Pools: Hope you enjoy those parasites! They tell you not to drink out of there for a reason & have even setup free ( & safe ) tastings.....WHY would you be silly enough to dip your hand in there?! So if I was a 1st time Bath-goer, I'd recommend seeing the Roman Baths. If not your 1st time, explore more of the awesomely quaint town & skip Rome read more

NO REFUND!!!!!! We walked 10mins inside but had to leave. This lady who works there offered us a refund since we only saw the entrance of the place but the supervisor did not let us! He said we bought the ticket and toured for 15 mins! i mean 15mins??? seriously??? there were 6 of us with 2 seniors, one of our grandmas complained of fatigue so we decided to just go. It was an easy day trip from London to visit the Roman Baths. However, one day is not enough time in Bath! Bath is an adorable town, with great shopping, amazing history, and much to see and do! My friend and I were running around trying to see everything, and promised ourselves to come back in 2019/20 when they are opening a new area that they have been restoring. The ruins are better than I expected, and with the number of people, you need to take time to walk through and appreciate the very well done museum and displays. With your entrance fee you receive an audio guide, which walks you through the space. You can listen to it as much or as little as you like. The entrance fee for adults ranges from 16.50 to 1750 pounds depending on the season and entrance time. You can purchase tickets in advance online. I like how they have brought the space to life and have overlaid the ruins with video displays (like augmented reality) that provide a glimpse into what the space would have looked like back when it was a working bath. The site includes the remains of the Temple of Aquae Sulis, the Roman baths fed by the sacred hot springs, and the museum showcasing finds from Roman Bath. The bath was stunning with the roman architecture surrounding it. I loved that at the end you get a chance to see the roaring hot spring waters surging from underground into a cascading falls. You also can taste the waters. Remember it's hot springs. You either hate or like the waters. Just pour yourself a cup from the water fountain into a little cup. It's included in the price. My friend and I actually liked the heavy mineral taste in the warm water. We had several cups! read more

It was always freezing when I brought my students here and on more than one occasion I wanted to take a dip in the warm waters. I resisted the urge and a bit surprised my students did as well ;). I really enjoy the Roman Baths and have actually gone in and done the tour multiple times with my students and also to show the Mama Bear around. As far as group bookings they do a great job of getting back to you and providing a lot of information. However, when bringing a group of 56 students, it is difficult to find a place to stand together and not be in the way. I also know that they need to talk to the group, but again there really isn't space for that, nor can the back half of the group hear anything the staff are saying. They are students...and tourists, I think they can figure it out. We used to give the students about 2 hours to roam through and this assumes that 1) it isn't super busy and 2) that they aren't listening to every single narrative. I think two hours is a fair amount a time, but you may need a bit longer if you do read everything and listen to every narrative. Don't try to cut it short. Also the top level of the baths aren't always open, I have only been out there once in the handful of times I have visited, so I am not sure if there are specific times when they open it, but just be aware of that. And I do like their gift shop. I know...touristy stuff, but the reason I like it...the lotions, bath gels, and sprays. The one that is the favorite among me, my mom, and sister in-law is the White Grape line from di Palomo. I haven't found it anywhere else and they keep asking me to pick some up the next time I am in the UK. Overall, you cannot miss the Baths, it is worth the money, but if you can go early in the morning, you may not have to contend with the crowds. read more

Since my aunt and I had both been laid low with colds that we were still trying to kick by the time we visited Bath, we thought it only appropriate that we check out the health-giving waters to which this city can lay claim. The Roman Baths were quite striking, located at the heart of this picturesque town. We ended up buying joint tickets with the Costume Museum. The baths themselves were a must-see, especially considering how long they have been around. The museum was very well curated and it seemed like there was a new highlight around every corner. The free audio player you get in the museum does a great job explaining how the entire baths complex once looked. read more

Get here early enough and you can waltz around the entire site without bumping uglies with the rest of the tourist hoardes and French student groups. Neat re-creation of walls and such down in the changing areas so you might picture what it was like. A really cool museum, you can walk through exhibits describing the Roman baths and artifacts that have been discovered on the site, such as coins and parts of the old bath house. You start out by circling around the top of the baths area before walking through exhibits and down to the ground level of the baths. There are also sometimes costumed actors as Romans at the ground level. It might be helpful to use the audio headset to guide you through the museum as there is no real order to things. Even without the headset, there is a good amount of informational signs at each exhibit for you to read and learn about the site. read more

So amazing! You may think you've got a handle on Roman history, but I learned so much from the Roman Bath Museum that I had no idea about. So interesting to see how different cultures intersected during Roman rule and how the Baths later came to be so fashionable. The audio tour is really great. There are various places to sit in the museum so take a seat and listen to the various audio segments. Don't rush through it or you will miss great tidbits. I went first thing on a Friday morning and I'm glad I did. The crowds hadn't gotten up yet and I got to move through the museum at a more comfortable pace and didn't have to jostle for space. Highly recommend going at less popular hours if you can. Don't forget to take in the great views of the Abbey while there. Such a great museum. Must do. read more

This was great.We took the Audio tour and walked all through the Baths and rooms. So much history, so many artifacts, took lots of pictures.Well worth the money. But the crowds are everywhere. Sometimes making it impossible to move. Chose an off season to check it out. Dont forget to kneel down and dip your hands into the green-ish warm water.Then go to the Pump room and have a cup of tea or a taste of the sulfer-ish water if you dare. The Roman Baths are fantastic. It's a fascinating glimpse into the history of the Roman Empire, and more importantly, how normal citizens socialized and relaxed. However, be warned ye history-philes - there is a shit ton of information on the included audio guide. By the end I couldn't stand to play any more of it, and I practically wanted to cry out and yell "let me sit and just enjoy the baths!" Luckily, each point of interest with a corresponding audio entry often also had an alternative commentary by Bill Bryson, which were far more casual and less like having an encyclopedia crammed into my head space. read more

I love, love, love history. So does my husband. And although I went to Bath many years ago for the first time (just a few weeks ago being my second visit), the only image that stuck out in my mind was that of the gorgeous Roman Baths in the museum. Thank goodness we went! The Roman Baths museum is a fantastic way to understand and learn about the city of Bath and the importance of the Roman Baths to local society. It's a fantastic museum, giving visitors the chance to get up-close and personal with the actual baths (no, you can't swim in them! The water isn't treated in anyway) and learn about how the Romans got pampered, why they visited the Baths (health reasons, relaxation, to socialize) and what their experiences might have been. You'll see everything from curses written and placed in the waters by ancient Romans and miniature models of what the original buildings looked like. If you're lucky, like we were, you will arrive for the free tour of the Bath and find out that no one else is there! Our tour ended up being private and was extremely informative. Had we not been on the tour, although the free audio tour was helpful, I don't think we'd have grasped as much as we did about the Baths, the excavations, the construction, etc. We learned when the last time the Baths were used, the plumbing and piping systems, the slaves that worked there, the Royals who used the Roman Baths and legends about the baths and Bath in general. What an experience. It's one we won't forget and although this is a tourist destination, it's not a tacky one full of gimmicks. Go to learn, go to take in the beauty of the baths and use your imagination to fill in the blanks. read more

This is obviously the must-see site when visiting Bath. The experience is truly remarkable. You're provided an audio tour to help guide you through the exhibit and it gives you options for added information throughout. There is currently a fair bit of restoration occurring right now that diminishes some of the experience but you'll still leave feeling we are a blip in the history of the world. read more

The highlight of my trip to Bath! And we only spent 30 minutes there (such a mistake). Give yourself at least an hour if not an hour and a half for this fabulous site. The ticket price is very reasonable and includes a free audio tour guide (a must). The audio tour gives you so much more information than you would get without and even includes special commentary by Bill Bryson, the notorious travel writer. The guide gives you a great glimpse into the history of the place. I am not sure I would bring small children here, as they might get a bit antsy. Definitely more of a teenager / adult place. read more

Look at this, I've done something touristy... I've been told there were things other than bars and restaurants, but I'm a sceptic at heart. I was pleasantly surprised by this place... while still a bit on the expensive side, it's bigger than you may expect and can take quite some time to properly go through if this is your type of place. (Side note: if there's a long line here it may be worth buying a joint ticket at the fashion museum... a couple pounds more gets you another attraction and a quicker way in when back at the Roman Bath.) For me I'm a sucker for this type of history... admittedly not for the history in and of itself, but for the character and architecture... water and statues? Sold! The main star is the large open air bath itself... surrounded by statues you can imagine how epically cool it was back in its prime. Aside from that there are a few bits of running water inside that are cool, and a few alters, models, see-through floors, etc., that give you an idea of the scope of the place. Sadly when we were there the King's Bath was pretty much "under construction / restoration", but while symbolically important it doesn't really come close to the grandness of the outside bath. (Undoubtably the real star.) Just a note, I'm not sure true young ones would like it here... while there is some spectacle, a lot of the initial walk is less interactive than they may like... it's more like walking through, observing, and reading signs / listening to headphones. It isn't creepy or anything of the sort, it just doesn't have things to keep the younger ones occupied as some places of this sort tend to do. If you're into Roman history and in the area then this place is a no brainer... the only real downside is having to keep out of the untreated steaming bath water per the signs and stewards telling you so, but who pays attention to rules anyway? :-) (Actually, you're likely to here... while cool in principle the water does appear quite gross to to be honest!) read more

This place is just gorgeous! We did a day tour to Stonehenge and bath and it was really the best route to go during our visit. If you're going to go to the bath house be prepared to wait with the group you're in to go inside. This was the only downside in my opinion. Not sure if was just a tour thing though. Really interesting to think how people kept up with hygiene back in the day. Be prepared for crowds, yet it's well worth it. read more

I love this place. I also like Bath a lot. I would totally recommend taking a day trip here from London. It's my favorite of all the day trips I've ever done from the city. I did not take a guided tour. The Roman Baths are within walking distance of the train, so I just bought a train ticket. The train was expensive, but I think it's worth it and it's cheaper just to buy the ticket than it is for most group tours. I love walking around the baths and museum. One of my favorite exhibits in shows curses Roman's used to write on paper to their gods. They are pretty petty for the most part. I think it makes the people seem "real" to me. Of course they were real, and I realize that Romans are the same "modern humans" that currently exist on the planet. I guess it's just that my idea of them was that they were either great leaders or struggling to survive without time to think of petty complaints and revenge. WRONG! I had "an experience" with the exhibit dealing with pulleys. They were showing how a new type of pulley allowed a single person to lift more weight. So there were two pulleys and a line up to try them (all female). I was last and when I got to the old style one, I gently just sort of tugged it at first. I thought, "Wow this does seem much heavier." I had a flyer/museum map in one hand and so I used both hands and really yanked on the rope. The weight flew up to the top to the ceiling, which I guess is hollow because there was a loud "BOOM! BOOM!" with a hollow sounding echo. It hit each way and I was afraid I was going to break the ceiling panel. The woman in front of me, a senior citizen from the UK, said, "My, you are strong dear." Another woman said, " How did you do that? I couldn't do that at all!". I was really embarrassed at the time. In retrospect, at least the ceiling didn't get a dent or anything so I guess it could've been worse. I am convinced when I pulled the thing I somehow "cheated" and accidentally pulled it on an angle or something. I am not sure how I did it, because I booked out of that area asap. I was a little concerned I was going to get chewed out because the noise was really loud. Anyway, you may want to be careful with that one. Other than that I really had fun. I also recommend the pump room for tea. read more

I / we thought this was a waste of money . We went to Bath especially for the Roman Baths visit and were so dissapointed. Admittedly we didnt go with a guide which is optional but we were given a phone with all the information as you walk through and still I think an archeologist would be bored here. The one main bath that had water in it was interesting but for the two woman who were acting out the scenes from those days NOT. Just sitting and gossiping the whole time oblivious to the crowd. There was no feeling of being back in time or history. If you go here you must go with the guide to fully appreciate where you are. At £12 I think you should be advised to wait for the tour otherwise your basically looking at rocks mingled with the modern world and no water in the baths. read more

We took a day and went to Bath to visit The Roman Bath and the Bath Spa. I highly recommend it. We took an early train as we didn't want to beat the early afternoon rush. We actually got to Bath before the museum was open so we walked to a small shop by the train station and got a Bacon Sandwich, I wish I had taken down the name because it was amazing. . Salty and I'm sure super unhealthy but so yummy. Worth trying to seek it out. But back to the Museum, this was one of the few times on our trip where I got an audio tour and it was actually very interesting. The whole place was far more interesting than I had expected. It wasn't too busy and we were able to keep moving at a good pace. I do recommend going as close to opening as possible as when we left it was starting to get very busy and packed. read more

I don't want this to become an outlet in which to tell stories of my trip to London, but this was one of the most interesting spots that we traveled to. If you go to London, you have to take the day trip over to Bath. The Roman baths are like nothing you've ever seen. While the admission is a little hefty, it's worth it. There are baths everywhere, and while they look a little nasty due to hundreds and hundreds of years of sun exposure, it adds to the amazement of this place. When you come in, you receive a device that allows you to listen to information about specific parts of the place. The head of the statue of Minerva is the best. It's simply amazing, and a great visit. Plus, the streets of Bath themselves are amazing. It's such a quaint place with a bunch of little shops all around. Your ticket stub allows you to get a free cup of water that comes from the springs that fill the baths. While it sounds gross, it's even worse to the taste. They put the water through some filters, but only a few, I guarantee. It's warm, it's FILLED with minerals, and I could barely choke down a single sip. My friend, however, downed the whole thing. He suffered a bit of a stomach ache due to this. Believe me people, you have to try it for the experience, but don't drink the whole thing. The people that work there definitely don't expect it. Spend at least an hour here. I wish I would have spent even more time, just taking it in. It's an awesome experience. read more
