Both Bath Abbey and the Roman Baths are situated in the centre of the city around a square. It's easy to use them to get your bearings, especially when the buses drop nearby. The Roman Baths date back 2000 years and were one of the grandest spas of ancient times. They include the ruins of a temple, a bath house, and, of course, the famous Grand Bath. how incredible it was to be able to wander around such a huge building complex where the Romans came together almost 2,000 years ago (!) to swim a few relaxing laps, gossip with each other, and be pampered. Little bit of history about this: The Romans arrived in Britain in AD43 from Europe. 20 years later, they began building a temple complex around a hot spring. A local tribe worshipped their goddess Sulis at the spring before the arrival of the Romans, and the spring would go on to feed an entire Roman bathing complex. The Roman Baths you can visit today were built in around AD 70.
Our tour guide was Phoebe and she was so informative and so cheerful it made it easy to do this long tour and to hang onto her every word. Thank you, Phoebe. Not only did we get a brilliant history of the bands, but we got to explore areas that I think a lot of people would miss the nuances that are tucked away in darker corners or something. One of the fun things for me going through theirs they have a place where we can actually taste the water. The water does not taste like it looks because it comes from a fresh spring. The water in the baths is a little bit green because it sits in full sunlight all day with nobody splashing around, oxygenize it. But the architecture, the Care, the history everything about it is so inviting that everyone that goes to this place feels that they're walking through another time in history. You understand the Roman connection to this part of England.
This was absolutely worth the entire trip. What a cool place. So much history, great explanations and illustrations. Theyve done a great job of maintaining the site and making it safe to visit while maintaining the integrity on the building. You could sweep through in an hour or you could spend an entire day reading and exploring everything. I landed in the middle. 1.5-2 hours. It would have been longer if my husband had been there. I did get brave enough to taste the water. Dont miss it at the end! Entry was £22 and was worth it. I saw things i will always remember. I highly recommend at least a day trip from London.
This place was absolutely amazing! It is overflowing with history and a certain mystique from a long ago era. So well preserved it is that you can still seem to hear the merriment and the political intrigue in the walls. They have wonderful audio tours snd guided tours. I'm a history buff so this kind of thing is right up my alley. The baths are built over natural springs which are pictured below. It was a wonderful way to spend the afternoon! I highly recommend you select it for your itinerary on your next trip to Bath.
This is such a fascinating place to visit. One adult ticket was 32 pounds and well worth the money. They close at 6pm with the last entry at 5pm which is a decent amount to tour the building if you move quick. Give yourself more time if you can. I was on a tour with Viator and was lucky enough get into town early enough to buy a ticket for entry. It's located in the city of Bath which is a nice city in itself, and one of the most visit cities in Europe. When in Roman, do as the Romans do and take a sip of the water at the sink before you exit the building. It's warm and tastes good. It'll change your life, lol. Just kidding. Just don't try to dip into the baths. The green water looks unsafe. They have a lift for wheel chair users. Some parts of the building are tricky to walk on but I'm glad to see they're an inclusive establishment.
This Roman Baths are interesting and they provide a 1-2 hour informational tour that takes you deep into the Roman history of when this was built, the artifacts that were discovered, and what Bath was like before it was modernized. Excellent for historians or people who love Roman culture. The outdoor bath is the prettiest area for taking photos in. You definitely don't feel like your in England anymore here with it's true Roman essence, architecture, and history lessons. I recommend for families. It's a perfect tour for those with lots of family travelling. And it's right in the city center of Bath.
This was a nice surprise. We have been to Roman Baths but this is more unique. The hot water from below the earth was available thousands of years before the Roman's. They are behind us now for over 2000 years and the water is still flowing. The Romans correctly took advantage of a discovery and made these baths From the ground up, brick by brick. Hot room, cold room, dressing room. Massage room, steam room, cold room, gymnasiums. Separate massage , by sex. Gate valves for flow control, the big soaking pool lined in lead. Still no leaking. Hoards of silver and gold coins found here on display. Ha, the water still rises from the earth, goes into the Roman built overflow Channel, thru 12 x 12 lead slide gates they created and It overflows in to the Avon River. Out of a open spigot, you can drink a cup before you leave. Warm, slightly cloudy, and a Mineral taste. It was fine, I didn't fill my water bottle. Wasn't that good. This was a not to be missed experience.
A lot of history has happened between these walls and you can feel it. We took the tour with only an hour fifteen left to close and we were able to rush through it and get the most out of it. Expect to be here for at least two hours if you want to use the audio tour guide and listen to all the different exhibits this place has to offer. We learned a lot of interesting things while there and you could feel the heat coming from the water. Too bad the water is contaminated but you have to respect the fact they left natural history alone for us to see it exactly how it is. You can also get some beautiful views of the surrounding city while on the top floor.
In 2019 I came to bath with my daughter for her 21st birthday as she have been reading a lot about this side of the country. It was my first time learning about the Roman bath and we went to see it. I was confused to why the water is green and I found out it's the same water since the romans hence why no one should swim in it or touch it or drink it. ( I did see few people back then touching the water) This time I came with my younger one who is 19 years old so she can see it. She loved it and we enjoyed walking around. Relearning about the Roman baths again. I honestly advice everyone to go and see this place it's a definite go for it. Please don't touch the water or drink it. We saw today a gentleman who drank from it. I pray he doesn't get super sick as it's filled with bacteria. I have see a mother and her kids touching the water. Stay safe everyone and enjoy the beautiful history!
This is why I took the trip from London to Bath and it was well worth! The architecture and history are incredible! They have done a very nice job with the experience including the visuals recreating the past, the audio guide and the museum displays which transport you to 2000 years ago when this was first built. The architecture and engineering that it took to build this is truly amazing given when it was built. Also amazing to see how the Romans knew the benefits of exercising and more interestingly the value of alternating saunas and cold baths and we are just reawakening to that as a wellness tool.
Absolutely put this on your list and you will not be disappointed. This Bath tour is something not to be missed. Their audio tour was exemplary. Best audio tour we have ever been on! It was easy to use and we did not miss anything. So many interesting to see and learn. Very interactive and for all ages. They actually have an audio tour for your children.

For any history buff or fan of architecture, you should visit. Audio guide was informative and you got to get up close and personal with the different area of where Roman's would have used the Bath house. Time and money well spent. Have to visit if you are in Bath. read more

Make it a Roman holiday! Steeped in history, this ancient site makes you feel so like you're travelling back in time. Lasting 2,000 years, it has withstood the passing centuries, seen the rise and fall of eras, the dawn and dusk of civilizations and empires. I still get overwhelmed by how this was built before technology, how it has withstood all the harsh elements of the world, and we are able to appreciate its innovation to this day. £25.50 for two adult tour tickets, which was cheap compared to some of the other tours we took on our trip around England. We saw tours of school kids, so I think this would be a great trip for kids old enough to appreciate it. As you enter, you receive some nifty phone-recorders on lanyards that you can listen to information on each exhibit. So convenient if you want to linger on a particular exhibit or move on - tour at your own pace! It gave me plenty of time to enjoy what I was looking at rather than trying to read descriptions of everything. After going through the indoor exhibits, we made it to the Great Bath, the main attraction. These are neat because they are natural hot springs, so you can see the steam coming off the water! What a sight to look into the water and see the old stepping stones that Romans used, and visualizing a culture thriving inside this public bathing house. There is always restoration being done on-site, and you cannot tell where restoration has been done. It's really amazing how well they kept the site as original as possible, and how easy it is for tourists to navigate through the different rooms. At the end of the tour, you can hop up to the gift shop that is attached to the street. Nice shop, not cheap or corny, like some. Oh, Bath. You're one of my favoritest places in England, and I can't wait to visit you again! read more
Bath is the only place in the UK to have the whole city designated a World Heritage site. One of the main attractions in this cultural city is the Roman Baths. You get to walk in the footsteps of the Romans on the ancient stone pavements around the pool of spring water that is beautifully preserved and presented. The baths were originally built around 44 A.D. These baths are special because they are known to be the biggest and most complete representation of what was used by the Romans. My boyfriend visited the Roman Baths during our day trip to Stonehedge/Bath earlier this year and really enjoyed the Roman historic nature of the site. You get to see how the Roman's developed and used the hot spring from beneath Bath 2,000 years ago. You can get a free audio tour from the reception before you start. The audio guide is very clear and goes through each step and artifact of the museum with you. There was no line when we got there, but there are places within the tour that were very cramped as we made our way using the audio guide. The museum was really well laid out, informative and extremely interesting. There are films and demonstrations to add to the artifacts. We explored the rooms where the water was heated, the dressing areas, etc. All the rooms (the baths, the plunge pool, etc.) are very well preserved and restored. When trying to take a selfie next to the Great Bath, I accidentally dropped my camera. It bounced off the concrete and into the Roman Bath water. My heart dropped and I became was speechless for the first time on the trip. There was a group of 10 year olds across from us that started laughing at the incident. It definitely wasn't funny to me. I forced my boyfriend to try and fish my camera out of the water, but security came running to us and told us not to touch the water as it is unsafe. Security was nice enough to get my camera out of the water, take it apart to dry out the battery and SD card out. The staff was very considerate and understanding, and reassured me that people drop their cameras, cellphones, etc. every day. Thankfully, I was able to save the SD card and get pictures from the trip! Despite the unfortunate incident with my camera, we enjoyed visiting the preserved Roman spa and baths in one of the most beautiful cities in the UK. There was also an opportunity to try the Bath water at the end of the tour in the Pump Room just before the museum exit. read more

What a beautiful day spent in the Roman Bath especially that the sun was shining. After being welcomed by the architecture and view of the Roman Bath, one can take a walk around to explore the various rooms and what each once stood for. Each step/corner, tells a story. From tomb stones to sauna rooms, one is able to picture the lives the Romans once lived and the thought is beautiful. There's a lot to see in The Roman Baths but not too much that one gets tired and bored. Highly recommend that this place is visited. read more
A very cool experience! The whole town is very nice. People have personality [look at my pics]. They keep everything as it used to be back in the day when people actually bathed here. Now it's just there as a museum only. Outside in the town, you see a lot of street artists that are actually talented! We didn't spend a long time in Bath, sadly, because this was one of four stops in our day tour. As much as it's not an England top 3 must-do's, if you're in that area, it's a lovely town and interesting museum. read more

Awesome. Definitely an amazing place. I really enjoyed my visit to the Roman Baths. The wait was short even though it was a busy weekend. The museum with the artifacts was huge. I liked how there was a mix of pure artifacts with models and reenactments. The ticket includes an audio tour that you can listen to when its convenient. The best part of the Roman Baths was the bath itself. It took over 30 minutes of being in the museum (moving quickly through it) to get to the Baths. We could have stayed longer in the museum, but I was anxious to see the Baths. There are two viewing levels at the Baths. The top level gives you great views of the Baths and the Bath abbey. The lower level lets you get up close and person with the Baths. I love that there are no ugly barriers between you and the water. You should be very careful walking around on the uneven paving stones, as you could fall in the water. Even though it was busy, I never felt like it was too crowded. I liked how you could take photos standing right on the edge of the bath. I also appreciated that I never saw a single person try and touch the water. I love good tourists. You can also see where the warm natural water makes its way from the spring to the Bath. There are some tour guides who will answer questions and there are some guys doing some type of reenactment. Overall, this place is a class act. The Roman Baths plus our visit to Thermae Spa the day before made our trip to Bath amazing. You can't go to Bath without seeing the ancient baths. read more

Yuck, dirty and disgusting. OMG, I felt ripped off. So gross, think they were draining it, you can't touch the water due to high health risks. Totally a waste of time. Only good things were a few shops in the area, and a good bakery with tasty hand pies. read more

This museum is a must see if you find yourself in Bath England. As a matter of fact you could be staying anywhere in the southern region of England and make a day trip to Bath to see some shops and have tea and see the famous Roman bath ruins. First, queue and make your way to a very enthusiastic older gentleman who is very excited that you are there to witness such a historical site. You could deal with any number of men or women to help you out. Everyone we spoke to on the day of our tour and the day before when we got information was very helpful and nice. The price of the ticket was very reasonable, for such an historic site, (14 pounds) and well worth the admission. As you walk through there is a hand held audio device that speaks to you and gives you loads of information as you walk by each exhibit. You get to see and even walk on some of the actual ruins that made up the Roman bath house. Being able to walk where Romans walked 2000 years ago is kind of spooky exciting. The tour can take you as long as you like but typically can be accomplished in less than two hours. For your reward, at the end of the tour, you can sample the actual spring water. You be the judge on it's taste. I would love to go back and see the ruins again. It would be even nicer to sit in the water but I wouldn't want to turn it into an international incident. read more

When in Bath, you must see the Roman baths. It's what put this town on the map. The tour is roughly £13, but worth it. There is a free audio guide that leads you around the amazing grounds. It's pretty magnificent when you think of how long these mineral baths have been here and how they've been maintained throughout the years. The town itself is picturesque and if you have the opportunity, I'd recommend staying here for a night or two. read more

Our first stop was the Roman Baths, a well-preserved Roman site for public bathing. The Baths are a major tourist attraction. We were able to sample the Bath water in the Pump Room Restaurant. This mineral water was warm, and unsurprisingly, not very tasty! read more

I got the Twilight Tour and Dinner package as part of my ticket entry to the Roman Baths, and frankly it's not something I would recommended. Instead next time I would just get a straight up single ticket to the museum and wander around listening to the excellent audio tour guide. This package includes a 45min guide in person who you meet up with at 4:30 but unfortunately our guide had a super thick accent and it was hard to understand her. She also didn't display any enthusiasm for the amazing features in front of us and pretty much everything she told us, I had already heard from the audio guide, so not sure how much additional value thus component of the package was? I did like the combo of a three course dinner at the Roman Baths Kitchen being included as I discovered food I might not have otherwise, but that also acted as a restriction and I skipped eating in the assembly rooms which I would have done otherwise. I would also recommend that if you want to see and absorb all the amazing displays at this museum, that you set aside at least 3-4 hours to do this justice and definitely try a taste of the waters that all those regency folks in the 1800s came to Bath to drink. You get a free taste of the sulfuric rich waters towards the end of the tour and the taste is quite minerally but not barf- enducingly bad. read more
I'm big on history, so this was a great day trip for me. There are great layers of Roman and British history in the town and baths. Seeing the extend of the building site and the ongoing investigation is really interesting. Not a stop for someone interested in pubs and clubs. The city itself is sort of dreary and relatively bland. I would spend one day, see the baths, see the abbey, and head on home. Also a great stop to see museum ethnography in action. The layers of museum presentation are interesting unto themselves (since the baths were discovered and opened for tourists quite a while ago.) read more
It wasn't this building that really intrigued me, it was the people watching I did while waiting in line to try some of the infamous bath waters! I did bump into a man that played the digeridoo (Australian wind pipe), a dog playing with a man and his harmonica, and another woman dressed in ancient Roman garb. This place was great, though a little crowded since we did come at a peak time. You walk in and learn about the history of how Romans settled here and the healing qualities of the bath waters here. You see, its warm mineral spring water, so it was believed to have curable qualities to it. At the end of the tour, we were given a sample to drink from, and though I was a believer of the healing qualities, I couldn't finish my glass. Sorry, I don't like the taste of warm pennies soaked in water. I then walked away to the shopping district to buy a bottle of Evian. Don't laugh. read more
So you know, this is a museum. And a very good one. Some stunning and well preserved artifacts, and indeed the baths themselves. Great view of the main bath in juxtaposition with beautiful Bath Abbey, which was built century or so later. Only hot spring in England, and still bubbling away. Amazing how the Romans harnessed and took advantage of this natural wonder. Bath is a beautiful Georgian City with wonderful architecture, but this blast from the past cannot be missed. Will be a highlight of your visit read more

Dip into History Any tour of Bath has to include a tour of the Roman Baths. Even with the large crowds in July, the waiting line to get in, the self guided tour is still worth it. On the self guided tour, the crowds move along at a moderate pace and there is so much to see. It's a wonder that so much of the Roman construction has persevered through so much time. So, take a camera, be patient in the heat and enjoy. read more

I had no idea the Romans had such a presence in Britain back in the day and this place is a remnant of their legacy. The tour was informative & fun. I like the set up of the tour, it allows me to pace myself & skip around parts of the exhibit that do not interest me. Grouping the Bath Abby, the pump room restaurant & other attractions in a somewhat central venue makes practical sense to me because I feel People may want to see them all & spent lots of $$ in the process. read more

Must See! We got a groupon for 2 for a day trip to Stonehenge and Bath for £65. We met at Gloucester Station at 8am and returned back at 6:30pm. Upon our arrival in Bath we were given maps with points of interest if we wanted to explore on our own and our guide offered a guided tour as well. We stayed in Bath for about 3 hours giving us time for Lunch, to see the Roman baths and other interesting a sites in the city. Bath was a great city to visit with loads of history! We did get a chance to sample the spring water from Bath at the Pump Room. It was very metallic tasting, apparently because of all the minerals! read more

I'm not one for touristy spots, but this the Roman Baths is an exception! You can't visit Bath without coming here. I came in the afternoon and stayed until it was dark. Sunset from the bath area was amazing. The people were also extremely nice. There were non-English speaking tourists who took pictures touching parts of the museum with signs that said "Do Not Touch," and the guides/guards very politely explained to them that these structures are 2000 years old. I also accidentally leaned on some pillars that I shouldn't have, and they were extremely polite when telling me to come off. I'll be back soon, with a visit to the Thermae Spas this time! read more

The Roman Baths are one of the 'must see' things when you head outside of London. I know that there's a lot of history and sometimes you have to 'imagine' things for what they used to be. We entered the Roman Baths as part of a tour to see Stonehenge and really enjoyed it. Bath itself actually had many shops & restaurants that we would've visited if we had more time. The Baths themselves were a little under-whelming as you weren't able to actually touch anything. Some places had been re-constructed and the only places with actual water was the large green pool in the very bottom. read more

How could one go to Bath and not visit the namesake? I'm not sure, and I was not about to find out. Despite the entrance fee (like 10 pounds per person) I never once felt like it wasn't worth it. Wonderful history, well done exhibits, a pretty setting. The only thing that is a pain about this place is the potential for huge crowds. I went late after dinner (in the summer season they stay open until like 10pm) and I think this is the best way to go. The queue to get in had dropped from around a 100 I saw earlier in the day to 0. Inside it was easy to get around and it was far more relaxing (or so I imagine) then if it had been crowded to the brim with other tourists. The audio guide was free and very helpful and informative. It even had a track by author Bill Bryson if you're a fan of his work. I'm glad I didn't skip this small city and it's namesake attraction. read more
I couldn't say enough about this musuem. Simply one of the best historic monuments I have been to. I would recommend to anyone visiting the uk to find a way to visit Bath. The Roman Baths are a MUST see. The musuem is vee well done. Take your time to read about the history. It is really well presented. The videos right before you go into the actual bath area are,really interesting. I would suggest getting the audio tour so it can provide you with more info. Also, it is definitely worth going to the guided tour. I think it's done once an hour. If you are lucky there will be actors dressed in costumes of thst time. If so, go talk to them! Also, the main area is just beautiful to see! very picturesque! I highly recommend visiting! It us totally worth it! read more
