Met an old friend at this slightly elevated casual hotel restaurant and was pleasantly surprised by the friendly service and decent food. My expectations for hotel restaurants can be on the lower side, but I really enjoyed my outing on this occasion. I prefer sitting on a perimeter to feel more cozy, but Even though we were seated in the middle of the restaurant it's still felt pretty comfortable. My friend and I both ordered the Blackened salmon and really enjoyed the meal. I was super impressed at the freshness of the salmon- some might say I'm overly sensitive to fishy taste and aroma, but happy to report there was none at all. Also appreciated the pairing of the farro and heirloom carrots. The price was fairly decent, given the portion and quality of the salmon. Parking was a challenge but not uncommon for Charlottesville. Did not see where parking was available for non-staining guests, but maybe somebody can correct me on that.

Nice environment with Motown playing with pictures of the owner and Martin Luther King on the wall. $6 happy hour wines are easily ordered in the booths. The Chardonnay is really good. My mom enjoyed the Ruben and I enjoyed the greens, sausage gravy, sweet potatoes on the chicken dinner. We ordered a lobster ravioli to go. The fried chicken was bland, dry and flat. I would expect a southern restaurant to nail fried chicken. They did not. I also got odd pierces of chicken breast and drumstick. It was just odd and dry. No brine or anything. I will not return.

The restaurant had a nice ambiance and everyone was friendly. We came for drinks, but the bar was full, so we sat at a table. The food was okay.

I was recently on a work trip and needed dinner but didn't feel like driving so I ended up at The Ridley - and I am happy I did! I ordered shrimp tacos and they were AMAZING! The sauces on them were phenomenal - I can't even describe the taste! Would definitely get them again if I was from the area!

The food was okay. I had breakfast from the brunch menu. Scrambled eggs, hash browns, grits , turkey sausage and wheat toast. Our waiter was cordial. The atmosphere was very serene.

Saturday night was busy! Service was a tad bit slow but it wasn't bad. The waitress apologized and you could see she was working really hard. Bourbon street pasta: it was okay. I feel like it needed to be thicker and needed some salt. The chicken was dry.

We came for Saturday brunch on Mother's Day weekend. I was looking forward to having Southern food, as there's not much in my part of Southern California. Niece ordered the shrimp and grits. It was a good-sized portion that she needed a doggy bag to enjoy the next day. I got a cup of gumbo and the cinnamon roll. Both were excellent. The host was welcoming, and our server was pleasant. She obligingly took our photo several times, so I had my choice of the best shot. The place was light and airy, with the room open to the street. It was a nice day, so we had the best of both worlds: indoor seating, but a patio-like ambiance. We didn't realize that we could have had our parking validated for the valet, so we parked quite a distance away.

Had a delicious experience at The Ridley! Stayed at a nearby hotel and decided just to walk over to this restaurant. I opted to sit outside and people watch as I enjoyed my fabulous kid free supper. Started with a purple royal gin fizz drink which was refreshing and perfect to sip while sitting and people watching. My meal was delivered hot and honestly is one of the top 5 meals of my life. The chicken was perfectly cooked and along with the gravy and the biscuit under it, was just scrumptious. The "sides" of the corn chowder, sweet potatoes and collards were just perfect with this meal. I ended it with a lava cake because, no meal is complete without dessert. I will be craving this entire meal for many months to come!! Service was very kind! They were understaffed at first but you couldn't tell but how quick they were and kind. The restaurant is nice and opens up to outside which gives it a great vibe.

We sat at bar and had some drinks. Nice atmosphere and bartenders were friendly. We had an order of chicken wings, which were good as well. I would come back to eat dinner here sometime. We will be back

THE BIG: Located in the Draftsman hotel in Charlottesville. It's close by the University of Virginia. Spacious indoor seating and a few tables outside next to the street. Valet parking only. THE BLACK AND WHITE: We stayed at the Draftsman and naturally the best place to grab food was The Ridley downstairs. It's African American owned and has that southern charm associated with the restaurant. Some of the food items we got were the grilled chicken sandwich, homestyle breakfast, veggie omelet, and shrimp & grits. My favorite was probably the grilled chicken sandwich. It was a nicely cooked chicken and a healthy heaping of avocado on top. Next would be the shrimp & grits. It was a bit heavy, and I was eating some uncooked grits, but the flavors were amazing. THE FINAL BAMBOO: Great food, however on the higher end. You can expect menu items to be from $20-$30. Good place for southern comfort food.

So we came to Charlottesville on a last minute type trip and I wanted to experience a good brunch while in town. I saw the rich history behind the owner and decided I wanted to support a black owned restaurant. It was really beautiful on the inside. I enjoyed the diverse music. The best part was that the food was really good. I got the shrimp and grits and my mother got the breakfast platter. I think that was the name of it. The shrimp and grits were very flavorful and was more than enough to eat. My mother said she enjoyed the sausage and eggs also. I would highly recommend this beautiful restaurant to anyone visiting the area.

They neither responded to my email nor the review with any sort of explanation or apology which suggests that they don't really care. So I'll share this on Yelp too so others are aware of their poor customer service. We visited this restaurant with a group of seven and were excited to try it, especially because the outdoor seating area looked like a great spot for dinner. Unfortunately, the experience ended up being very disappointing. Service was extremely slow and disorganized from the start. About 15 minutes after ordering, a different waitress brought food to our table that we hadn't ordered, then quickly took it away without much explanation. From there, things only got worse. Our meals came out slowly over the course of 30-45 minutes, just one or two plates at a time, with no communication about the delays. Our four-year-old waited nearly 45 minutes for a simple order of fish sticks. Even basic service was lacking. We had to ask multiple times for something as simple as an apple juice refill, and it still took far too long to arrive. Toward the end of the meal, our waitress stopped checking on our table altogether, which made it difficult to order dessert. The food itself was pretty good, which is the only reason this isn't a one-star review. However, the poor service and lack of attentiveness completely overshadowed the experience. Overall, it was frustrating and disappointing, and we don't plan to return.

It's located in a strip mall behind a Staples right across the street from the Omni Hotel. You walk up and right away you know they mean bbq business! Two huge smokers with chopped wood stacked on both sides of the entrance. The smells of smoked meats welcome you into a spacious and cozy restaurant. We sat in the dining room and were given menus including their daily meat choices. The food options are plenty and it took a while to make decisions! We decided to split a two meat plate and their catfish bites appetizer. We chose their pulled pork and burnt ends ($4 extra, but worth every cent), we got their collard greens, baked mac and cheese, and cornbread as sides. We chose their sweet and sassy sauce and also tried their Alabama White sauce( horseradish). The catfish bites were lightly breaded (and I mean lightly! Nice big chunks of fish!) The two meat plate was a great size for two and definitely a hearty portion for one (we could have each had our own plate though because the food was that good!) The pork and burnt ends were so tender and well-seasoned/smoked. The baked Mac and cheese was so gooey and the collard greens.... Hands down BEST COLLARD GREENS EVER!! they put pulled pork in them!! We drank the juices, it was that good! The cornbread was the perfect sweet ending to our wonderful meal. Service was outstanding and everyone there was welcoming and kind. Definitely recommend to anyone wanting real southern BBQ for great food, cider, atmosphere, and prices. We will definitely be back! Thank you, Vision BBQ!

The Babyback Ribs were really good. The ribs are taken off the bone for the soul sandwich and plated on slices of potato rolls. The Fried Chicken was good but not the best I've had in Charlottesville. I would have liked the outside to be crispier. The cornbread that comes with the order was also good. It was not traditional cornbread-- it tasted like carrot cake corn bread. The Mac and Cheese was a little too overcooked for my liking. However, for the meat sandwich and two sides were a large portion and cost 12 dollars which was awesome. Overall, Soul Food Joint is a charming locally owned soul food place downtown. It wasn't the best fried chicken or barbecue that I've had in Charlottesville, however the food was good and the portions were great for the price.
