I normally avoid "new-built" pubs, since, to me, part of what makes a pub is the charm of its history. Like people, pubs accumulate character over time, and until a place had has that chance to mature, it's just a bar . . . and I'm not a fan of bars. Bars are where you go to struggle for conversation over too-loud music, guzzle crap lagers, scream at the game on the telly, and make awkward eye-contact with semi-appealing strangers until too much Fosters makes them positively irresistible. Bars are _not_ a place you go to relax with good pints and good company.
That having been said, I'm going to make an exception with the Resting Hare. First off, the tap selection is fantastic, as befits the same folks that brought us the marvellous Euston Tap. They really know their pints, and it shows in both the handles and the bottle selection. Secondly, the place is goddamn gorgeous. I'm assuming it was an old hotel bar, because there is fantastic Art Deco from the floors to the light fixtures. It seems like it should be filled with flappers and bon vivantes sipping gin and tonics rather than scholars and students drinking Beavertowns, but there it is. Lastly, the service was extremely friendly, offering tastings of everything and good recommendations on what to try. The food looks good, but I didn't try, and will update my review when I do. Let me take this moment to ask, what's with the "Spitfire Ale Tart?" It's bloody everywhere all of a sudden, which makes me wonder if it's really, really popular or just complete crap. I think I'll stick with the Hurricanes for now, just to be on the safe side. read more
