Happened into the Herring after our tall ship cruise to see whales. It was 8 minutes before the kitchen closed but we were welcomed in with open arms and a smile! I had the fish sandwich and hubby got the fish and chips. Ahhhmazing!! The fish was cooked beautifully. Crunchy outside and juicy tender fish on the inside. We chose this restaurant after seeing the pictures of the huge Lobster Rolls that others had posted. There are 2 sizes, 1/4 lb and 1/2 lb. The 1/2 lb was $38.50, so double the price of other restaurants that serve more modest sized portions. But well worth it if you are a Lobster Roll lover like myself! The patio of this restaurant doesn't look over the water like many others do, but this wasn't a big deal for us as we were just looking for a quick bite. The restaurant was packed and there was a line up, but the waitresses weren't able to estimate the wait time. Not a big deal for us as we are on vacation and not in a big rush. One of the waitresses later told us a table was getting their bill and we could have their table. When we followed up with them later she said someone had rushed out and grabbed the table before she could give it to us. So the next time a table was almost ready she told us we should grab it before someone else did. Our orders were taken pretty quickly, and our drinks were brought out. But the food took a long time, at least 45 mins to come out. Most of the tables around us didn't have their food yet either, so we must have all sat down around the same time. It is a small kitchen and they are not used to large crowds so be prepared to be patient when you come. There were 4 of us in our party. I had the large lobster roll. It was a beautiful roll and the taste was okay, but not great. You could tell it was frozen lobster meat, which was a bit disappointing since we were on the East Coast. The Arcadian salad was fresh and tasty. Hubby had the poutine which he said was good, but nothing special. The kids had a grilled cheese sandwich and hot dog. The hot dog was huge and our 5 year old enjoyed it. The grilled cheese sandwich looked good and our daughter finished it as well. Overall, it's an okay restaurant, but if you are looking for lobster rolls, I'd go somewhere else. read more

It's like watching a welled oiled machine at work. Our server was taking care of the bar area, serving orders etc...., such a cute place. Loved the vibe. Loved the food. He was on top of his game. Big menu but nothing special. Pretty much all the stuff is frozen from a good service company. Fries are very good, fresh cut in house, which is the saving grace that had me give 3 star and not 2. Menu hasn't changed in years apparently. A positive is that the staff are all great, friendly, and service overall is good. Kudos to the staff. Not good. Plain and simple. My husband and I were talked into ordering the 1/2 pound lobster roll by a local at the bar. We would have gotten the 1/4 pound but were told it was soooo worth the extra $15 bucks per roll. I knew we were screwed when the bar tender said to the local "you talked them into an "upcharge" too? Then laughed...right in front of us. Really? First of all...gross cold fries and frozen onion rings. Second, frozen, watery (I suppose from being thawed to fast or frozen to long) lobster on a ridiculously stale hot dog bun which was wet...yes wet on the bottom...soaked...from frozen lobster, I presume. Ugh...the buns were like the cheap brand you buy at any discount grocery store. We ordered two beers and two margaritas. Bill with tip was $140. Two rolls, two beers and two margaritas. $140. This restaurant was recommended to us by the shuttle driver at The Algonquin Hotel. It was horrible. Just wow. Shame on the owner. Such a bad first impression of our first night in St Andrews. We were in the area and ate here twice. It is definitely the place where locals hang out. We met some very nice people from the local area the first time we ate here. They were very willing to share about the area. The food was good and the beer specials by the pitcher a hit! The wait staff were efficient and friendly. The first night we were there was really busy and the waitress did well with a lot to cover. My husband had the fish sandwich and I had the mussels! Both were very good! The second time in we had the fish chowder/stew, also very good! Definitely a friendly, chill place to be. They have outside dining which we took advantage of. We decided to stop at The Red Herring after some whale watching and we had a wonderful experience! You sit yourself at the wide variety of tables inside and out on the patio. It isn't right on the water like some other establishments, but you can see the water and also enjoy the atmosphere the street and courtyard offer. The service was prompt and polite. The appetizers were delicious, and you could easily make a meal of those alone. We got fish & chips after seeing another review praising them, and they were some of the best fish & chips I've ever had. The fresh cut fries used were noticeably outstanding. Hit and miss. My son ordered the fish and chips. It looked great and he said it was probably one of the best fish and chips he ever had (fish and chips is the only seafood he'll eat. Teenagers, what can you do.). I had a bacon cheese burger. It was a bit on the dry side, my bun was a bit burnt but OK I guess. My wife ordered cream of broccoli soup with a turkey sandwich. Just awful. There was absolutely no "cream" to the soup, kind of looked like green dishwater. I'm not a chef but even I could make a better cream of broccoli soup than that it is NOT that difficult. Worst service ever...we came here last night riding through with a cousin and there was a waitress on that was not happy we sat in a closed off section. We gladly moved areas, yet she still did not give us any service. Tonight we rode in again...I'm kinda thinking we came in on Harley's and had disheveled hair, biker boots and riding glasses, she didn't like us....we walked in for a couple drinks and again, she did not serve us. it smelled a little of stale beer when we walked in. the bathrooms were not very clean. it was raining so we sat inside. the view of the water is blocked by an old building and chain fence that are right outside the window. the waitress was very nice, helpful, and attentive. the prices were $13.99 for each platter we got (burger/fries/slaw and calamari/fries/slaw). the hand cut fries had good flavor, but were not crispy AT ALL, and i like my fries crispy! the burger itself (done medium well, they didn't ask how i wanted it) was under-seasoned and not juicy. i got the 'dirty burger', which has jalapenos, cheddar, onion, lettuce, tomato. the only real flavor came from the jalapenos. hubby got calamari, which he said lacked flavor, but i though tasted 'fishy'. also, not crispy at all, soggy, actually. the 'tartar' sauce was weird. the base tasted like a mix of sour cream and yogurt and something unidentifiable. hubby even said the beer was very 'bland'. the food comes piled high in a small basket....so after putting my burger together and taking a bite, i had to keep putting it down on a pile of french fries. wish i had a plate. read more
