This place is very unique and we are glad we opted to stay here. We stayed in cabin 22, and it IS a little rough inside... I did hear they're working on renovating all of them. I know the renovated ones are beautiful. :) Keep in mind when booking that you are opting to stay here for the "experience" of sleeping in a train car... it is very similar to camper living simply because of the size and shape of the train car itself. Our "train" slept 6 people but it's a little misleading... the main bed could sleep 2 adults comfortably but I don't think the 4 bunks should be advertised for anyone other than children (I'd imagine it would be very uncomfortable if someone's grandma had to sleep on it!). My biggest complaint about the room was not that it wasn't "fancy" but that it had minimal hooks/shelves/storage/counters... I feel like it was hard to navigate around at times with 2 other adults and a 4 year old and if we didn't have the empty bunks to use, i'm not sure what we would have done with our stuff. The bathroom needs more hooks! Rather than a random chair, maybe a tiny narrow dresser?.. I get it; the room is small and that's fine but maybe just more more functional things to keep everyone's sanity in check while getting ready :) We really loved the petting zoo, the little playground, the train the runs right through the front of the property, and the wagon ride (which we did try and thoroughly enjoyed!). We head to Pennsylvania every year but this was our first year trying out this place. It was great. The store was awesome, the food was delicious and they even had a place outside where you could take a buggy ride from the local Amish people and of course we did. The have a wide variety of cabooses that you can rent just like a hotel room. We haven't tried this yet but just may do that next year when we return. I highly recommend this place if you visiting the area. You won't be disappointed. read more

We stayed in April 2025, this was a unique experience staying in a caboose. People who come need to realize you're staying in a caboose and not the ritz. We still still enjoyed our stay. Being it's a month or so later that I'm writing this, but Mike (I hope I remember his name correctly) gave me the 5c tour and the history of the motel. It's very interesting, especially since I didn't notice the check-in area/store/kitchen was multiple train cars joined. Also, the restaurant is old retired Pullman cars. He is a wealth of knowledge and very engaging. Plus, within a half-hour drive, there are many things to do. I would recommend this motel as a thing to do in their lifetime. read more

I am rating this as an experience and not for the actual accommodations. The experience was really special. We stayed in a caboose that had one double and 4 bunk beds. It was really cool to stay in an actual caboose and it was fun to walk around and see the other cabooses. They had a small petting zoo with two goats, two pigs, two houses and an alpaca. They offered buggy rides which we did not do and there was a restaurant on site as well called the Casey Jones Restaurant (in a separate review). So I give the experience 4 stars and really applaud the family for rescuing these train cars and making them into something useable. Now the practical review: 2 stars. The room was terribly damp, the AC barely took the humidity out, I think it might've been cooler outside than inside. The room is small, very small and I think it would be better if instead of trying to fit as many people as possible by putting all these tiny beds, it may be better to make a couple of the cabooses only for couples with a queen or king size bed and a bigger bathroom. The shower was almost unusable it was so small (and we aren't large people). The floor of our shower was so spongy, due to the shower being too small and water going on the floor outside the shower, that it won't be long before the floor completely rots out. These bathrooms really should be entirely water proofed and tiled instead of trying to put a mini tub/shower unit in it. So my recommendation is to spend one night, get the experience but then book a bed and breakfast the next night. I will say that every person we came into contact with at the motel was very friendly, they even called us after checking in to make sure we didn't need anything. Start off- you get to sleep in a TRAIN CAR! How can you beat that? The top tier customer service was just icing on the cake. The room was 1/2 of a baggage car, and the interior had been converted to a very comfortable motel room with GREAT heat. The wind rocked the car, which added to the experience. All that was needed was railroad sounds piped in. The water pressure was perfect, and the shower didn't run out of hot water. All of the amenities worked well (fridge, microwave, coffee maker, and tv). I'll definitely be back! Reservations are STRONGLY recommended, as they do book up fast. read more

I love staying at the red caboose hotel. The experience is a very unique one. All the colorful and cozy cabooses are so fun and cool to look at. Staying here is conveniently located near the stragsburg train, national toy train museum, and the Pennsylvania train museum. When you check in you get a coupon for one free adult admission to the national toy train museum with the purchase of one adult ticket. It's also convenient to get coffees and toast to take to your caboose from the Casey cafe. My wife and I originally had reservations at the Wyndham Lancaster Resort but due to a family emergency we had to cancel. I still wanted to do something fun since I had taken off work and it was also my 60th birthday weekend. I remembered the Red Caboose Motel because we stopped there for lunch back in 2006. I quickly made a reservation for Thursday -- Sunday. Christine, at the front desk, asked me if I wouldn't mind staying in a different caboose each night due to a mix up with the reservations. I didn't mind at all and it was fun to stay in three different cabooses over 4 days. Christine is awesome, by the way. I was in #29, #24 and #7 and they were all similar but a little different. Each one had A/C, a microwave, a fridge & 2 TVs. There were no closets or dressers but there was a small table and two chairs. You park right outside of your caboose, so I only brought in what I needed, to be honest. You have to remember, cabooses are SMALL so don't go expecting a standard hotel room at the Marriott. The cabooses are old and rusty but some have been recently painted. I was out most of the day so I really only spent time in the caboose at the end of each day and then in the morning before heading out. I slept like a baby. The bathrooms were clean. Water temperature was great and I really had no issues. The gift shop, restaurant and property is very nice. I ate dinner in the restaurant one night, so that was fun, and the service and food was great. The petting zoo was a fun surprise. If you are into trains, this is the place to stay for sure. I don't think my wife would have been into it ... so I was secretly glad to be alone. Don't tell her ... haha. Because the property is very dark at night, I would string up small white lights from one caboose to another that ran all the way down. How pretty would that be?? It would light up the caboose area at night without blinding anyone. It rained a lot when I was there and it was hard to see the huge puddles of water at night because it was so dark. read more

We recently returned from a trip to the Red Caboose Motel (stayed June 23rd-June 25th). We stayed in Caboose #10, the Southern, and loved it. I will say that I was nervous about the heat in a metal structure, but the staff had the two A/C units running and it was perfect. Our first day there had reached 98 degrees and the hottest the caboose got was 75 with the units set to 70. If you follow their instructions about coming and going quickly and not leaving the door wide open, you'll be fine in the heat! It looks recently renovated and was comfortable, the fridge/freezer was a perfect size for a few days, and our 4 year old son is still talking about how much he loved sleeping in a bunk bed (on the top bunk of course) in a caboose. If you're a train lover, this is the place to stay. If the main road to the train museum and Strasburg railroad wasn't so busy, it would be within walking distance. There is also a toy train museum within walking distance on an adjoining property. Perks include the petting zoo and being able to watch the Strasburg train go by if you're hanging around during the day. We decided not to go on the horse buggy ride- it was too hot and I couldn't do that to the horses. This was our son's first vacation and my second stay here (approx 36 years earlier) and we will likely be back! Pros: Perfect location. Fun. Great restaurant. Great price. Friendly staff (we got a call about an hour after checking in to see how we were doing and if we had any questions). Quiet at night. Never had any issues with water temp with showers- wish I could say that about some hotels I've stayed at. A memorable trip for the train lover in my life and unlocking childhood memories for me. Cons: None for us. If you're looking for a 5 star hotel, stay at one. I've read reviews about how disappointed people were and I think you've got to understand that this isn't a hotel and you're staying in the confines of a caboose. A caboose isn't a large structure and is long and narrow. If you don't understand that it will be small, a bit cramped with a lot of people, and be old, then you should find another place to stay. It was perfect for us. However, my 5'10" husband had to duck to get under the shower head because the shower is what you'd find in an RV. But again, knowing you're staying in a caboose means you'll have to make some sacrifices for a 10 minute shower. We were willing to sacrifice that for awesome memories. read more

This is a five star review. I will preface by saying the rooms are not five stars. They're not. They were never going to be. But, they are... TRAINS! The rooms are trains! What more could you want? The rooms are incredibly spacious - with a queen bed for adults, and bunk beds for kids. There's a petting zoo, and carriage rides, and quarter operated things that move back and forth. There's even an arcade like you remember from your childhood. This place is like nothing else you can experience. If you're looking for a pool, and a posh room, and all the fancy pieces, you won't find it here (although you'll find a great diner, and a wonderful giftshop). I brought my family to this wonderful Motel in Strasburg, PA! My 4 1/2 year old grandson was absolutely thrilled with staying in an actual train car! It was clean and perfect for our needs! Everyone from the people on the phone who helped us book this trip to the people at the desk, housekeeping to the Buggy Rides, to the petting zoo were just friendly, knowledgeable and very helpful! Another big plus is the centralized location of the Motel! Everything related is nearby! They also have a terrific restaurant right on the property which I will give its own review. Any review regarding this experience needs to be prefaced with the understanding that these rooms are retrofitted cabooses! Anyone who understands trains knows a few things about cabooses. They were not designed for creature comforts. Cabooses were down and dirty living quarters for off duty trainmen traveling with a train. Nothing is done "in" a caboose. Life is lived "on" a caboose. So, anything positive or negative said about a stay here, has to be tempered with the understanding that retrofitting an early 20th century caboose isn't exactly an easy task. Cabooses were not built to accommodate building codes. They were meant to be a rudimentary "camper". Trying to frame them into luxury accommodations could prove to be a challenge. We stayed two nights in the Norfolk and Southern Honeymoon Caboose. It was quaint, cute and enjoyable. It was simple and accommodating and had the caboose feel to it. Linens were clean and plentiful, room was clean and neatly presented, bathroom was clean. Initial presentation was very nicely done. The bed was comfortable. The whirlpool tub was functional, spacious and clean. It easily accommodated two people. It worked well and was a nice addition to the room. No sign at all of bed bugs. The room was well kept. One note: Bring your own pillows. The pillows provided were wafer thin and lumpy. For a "honeymoon suite", the pillows should have been better. With that said, we never asked for different ones, so the proprietors never had a chance to make it right. The front desk was unstaffed by the time pillows became an issue. We visited in February, in the dead of winter. The room took a very long time to heat and it was a challenge to regulate it through the night. Due to the open underside of the caboose, the floor remained ice cold throughout. Slippers are in order. It would be very hard to keep the floor warm without a costly floor based heating system. It is a caboose. Certain concessions have to be made. It was also a little drafty. Here is where I feel the biggest drawbacks to the room exist. The door to the outside is not framed well and appears to be an "inside" door. You can see light through the cracks on all four sides of the door. (See pictures) The same exists where the air conditioner is framed into the wall. (See pictures) There could afford to be some work done on these issues. The door is likely a challenge because I'm sure Lowes doesn't have "Caboose doors" in inventory. Cold air could be felt blowing in at these locations. I was also able to speak to my wife inside the room, from outside the door, in a regular tone of voice. This made us realize that, more than likely, any "honeymooning" or "anniversary celebrating" being done inside could likely be heard from the outside. The place was empty though, so we didn't hold back. Our apologies to the petting zoo. During a busy summer season, your neighbors may not appreciate the approach we took. If you are looking for exquisite, 5 star luxury accommodations with lots of room, where you are pampered and doted on, this place may disappoint. If you are looking for an out of the way, quaint and extremely unique lodging experience with some nice amenities and friendly down home folks, this fits the bill! Part of the experience here...is the experience. It's unlike any lodging elsewhere. Quarters are a little tight, but again...it's a caboose. Honestly, this place strikes me as a "work in progress". It looks like a place that probably fell apart over years and was purchased by new owners who are slowly renovating and restoring it, one precious caboose at a time. The train men of yesteryear would marvel at the luxury transformations that have taken place on their cabooses. They'd love riding one of these babies. You should try it yourself! Quick addendum...Appreciated the prompt response from management on this review, and it pretty well supports what I said. It is a labor of love in progress. We will be back! Just stayed here with my wife and two toddler sons, and this place was a tremendous hit with our whole family! First off, although you'll see pictures of the cabooses looking worn on the outside, they're clean, comfortable, and in excellent shape on the inside. One nice feature was that the refrigerator had an actual freezer (not just a metal box), which matters because you'll probably pick up a ton of food in Amish country to take home. Our kids loved the cabooses, with our 2 year old screaming to his Mickey the Mouse doll, "Mickey, we're in a caboose!" It was also wonderful to have the petting zoo, carriage rides, and playground right there, as we could entertain and run our kids around. You're probably staying here because someone in your family loves trains, and there's a historic train museum, two model railroading museums, a model train shop, and a historic train ride all within a 5 minute drive of the place- to say nothing off all of the Amish food! Finally, the staff were all really helpful, friendly, and enthusiastic, from the ladies who checked us in and out, to the guy who gave us the carriage ride, to the guy restoring the caboose. Super cool experience!! I booked this as a treat for my husband on our honeymoon, and it was so cool to stay in a caboose. We happened to be there a night that live jazz was being played at the barn, so we went to get drinks and see that too. The gift shop was 10/10 as well. I had booked a half caboose but we were upgraded to a full car for the occasion. It was about the size of a long RV, with a small bathroom and shower in the middle and a full size bed at each end. We utilized both the staying was phenomenal and convince we literally had 6 guest and the caboose was comfortable. Inside of the caboose, it has everything you need for an overnight; towels, complementary soap/shampoo, coffee, and their customer service was great super friendly and welcoming. No to mention, the outdoors is amazing if you are escaping the big city this place is a great place to distress or you are coming from another small town now doubt their sunset will make you see its unique. (This visit was made during the times of Covidious. When things return to a look of normality - your experience likely will vary.) This is truly one of the all time great gimmick stays that you can do! By no means is it the only place where you can sleep in a caboose or a train car as others do exist in the country. But when you add in being right next to the tracks of the Strasburg Railroad (even though they were still closed during our stay) and next to the National Toy Train Museum (also closed) along with right down the road from the Choo-Choo Barn (closed) and the Railroad Museum of PA (closed), it's a foamtastic dream fest (and great if you have kids too). Let me just start by pointing out the one really overriding caveat that needs to be mentioned before staying here. There are however many cabeese here (40?, 45?, 47?) along with a baggage car and a mail car (I'm not talking about the Shady Rest Hotel rooms). Now with more or less any hotel stay you do at this point in time you expect a decent amount of pictures on their site or app prior to your stay to tell you what to expect about the room you'll be booking. Nay-Nay on that here. While there are different caboose types (small family-medium family-large family-couples), no two are exactly alike and to be 100% honest the pictures that are on the website do not tell enough of the story so that you know what you're getting. As an example, we stayed in a large family caboose (#8 - The Great Northern). There are no specific pictures on their website for that caboose. Sure if you click on Large Family Caboose you see a single picture (no bathroom pix or anything about the bunk beds) but what caboose is that from? I think in 2020 you need to do better than a composite shot for however many large family caboose you have especially if the layouts are not all the same like in a traditional hotel. There should be pictures for each caboose and a way to reserve a specific one online versus "hoping for the best" when you get there or calling to request a specific one, which of course won't help much if it's first time and you don't even know what to ask for in the first place. Check in was easy as the reservations was prepaid so you show up, give your name and they give you an old school key on Red Caboose key chain along with a property map showing you where to go and information about their restaurant (we didn't partake as the menu looked good but the prices did not). The actual caboose was great. As soon as you enter there is a small fridge/freezer combo in the corner. The full sized bed. Small table filled with pad, pen, bible open to Psalm 76-77 and a Lancaster County tourism book. Then comes the sink with the toilet and shower area (don't be overly tall or large or else they won't be happening) with a small set of French Doors leading to the two sets of bunk beds. Tight. Compact. But Functional. Think of it as glamping in a caboose. Flat out some of the reviews listed on Yelp and over on Trip Advisor are complete junk written by people who are contextually clueless. With that said, this place is not for everyone. If you don't have realistic expectations you're going to be disappointed. This is not the Waldorf Astoria and you really need to have a sense of adventure to get the most out of it. While not perfect, it's good enough that we really enjoyed it and likely will be back at some point when the mood strikes for something different. read more

We recently had lunch at the Casey Jones Restaurant which is part of this attraction; I wrote a review on that experience on the restaurant's page. We enjoyed looking at the animals and the beautiful views surrounding the Reb Caboose, and also checking out the hotel rooms in the train cars (from the outside only though). For the second year in a row, my wife and I have stayed at the Red Caboose Motel on our visit to a show at the Sight and Sound Theater in Ronks. If you are looking for luxury, don't go to the Red Caboose. However, if you would like to have the neatest experience of any "motel" stay, this is it. You get to sleep in a converted railroad caboose. The quarters are tight, but the bed was comfortable, the room was clean, the staff friendly, the food is great at the Casey Jones restaurant (two converted railroad dining cars), the views of the Amish farms surrounding the complex, and the gift shop, are what makes this place standout. Sure, I could stay at the local Holiday Inn Express, Clarion or Wyndham, but as nice as those facilities can be, they cannot match the atmosphere of the Red Caboose. The Strasburg Scenic Railroad and the Pennsylvania Railroad Museum is right around the corner, too. I know where I will stay when I return to the Sight and Sound Theater's show for next year (Noah); I will again be spending the night at the Red Caboose! read more

It had just been renovated it was really nice and clean. Our 2 year old thought he had died and gone to heaven. The gift shop big and has something for everyone. Lancaster seems to be the land of novelty hotels, and the Red Caboose is at the forefront. Dozens of cabooses on tracks have been converted into fun motel rooms. Each car is slightly different and some have more beds than others. Kids and the adventurous will love the bunk and loft beds, but the higher you climb the less room you'll have between you and the ceiling. Pay attention when you book your room or you could wind up in the house from Petticoat Junction, the website doesn't do a great job of differentiating between the rooms in the house and the train cars. There is a lot of stuff to do on site, a free petting zoo (but bring quarters for he feed machine); a sprawling gift shop; a train museum; wagon rides; and wifi and several pokestops abound. The restaurant and bar are facing the same staffing issues that the entire industry is facing right now, but it's a great place to exercise some patience while you enjoy great coffee or a good beer. The entire area is verdant and gorgeous. When we left to wend our way back home I found myself easing off the accelerator so I could enjoy the ride as long as possible. read more

The family and I stayed here for two nights in August 2023. We stayed in lucky cabooose #7! Overall - comfortable, clean and the kids loved it! There were cobwebs on the lanterns in the bathroom and the linens looked a bit dated - but they were definitely clean! Extra towels and blankets were plentiful. We had a delicious breakfast at Casey Jones' (get the sour dough toast!). Do not expect a luxury hotel - you're staying in a converted train car! My three year old LOVED sleeping in the choo choo hotel and couldn't get enough of the petting zoo and horse and buggy. We are so glad we stayed here and we plan on staying here again! read more

Ok we were scared to stay here because it sound jenky but it was actually a really good experience!!!! We came to see sight and sound theater and stayed here which was only minutes away. The train rooms are remodeled. They are nice. They do have window units so if that noise bothers you then you might look in to renting a room from the big house instead or ask about the handful of train cars that do have central. The restaurant that's attached serves good food and the portions are INSANELY huge. As u sit in the train car restaurant I see a ton of biggies going by and my kids loved that part. There is a farm across the street so the flies can be a little crazy but they are just normal flies. Not the ones that bite. Then the little store attached to the restaurant had Amish goods. We had a really good time and will definitely be back. read more

Our family thoroughly enjoyed our stay last evening! The food at the adjoining Casey Jones' was great! The kids were SO excited when we got to our room and had already enjoyed the rides on the porch and friendly kitties. They also loved that we were right next to the playground! Our kids also loved the wheel on the caboose, exploring the tracks after the trains were done for the day (they are BIG time rock collectors), and the coziness of the caboose. After our two-year-old came to our bed, I ended up in his bunk which was surprisingly comfortable. Since it was a cooler night, the blankets were great and we were surprised to find some hot air balloons nearby in the morning! I love The Red Caboose Motel, and Casey Jones Restaurant in Lancaster, PA. I have loved trains since I was a kid, and it was amazing to stay in a caboose and wake up to the sounds of the steam trains passing by from just down the tracks. The rooms are clean, comfortable, and cozy with a deck/entrance to enjoy the surrounding Lancaster views. The Staff truly is amazing and does a great job to make sure you are taken care of; from the front desk, to house keeping, to maintenance, and the restaurant, everything is great...OH and the Food, is amazing!!! I personally love the Sausage Gravy for Breakfast, The Burgers for Dinner, and they even have draft beer!! Stay Here - and Make Some Memories!! read more

I saw the Red Caboose Motel in the 70's during a Lancaster visits. I always wanted come and stay. I'm almost 67 and finally made it happen. Love, love, and more love! Check in was a breeze, our car was awesome with a great view. During our stay we were relaxed and cozy. Comfortable bed, super clean, fun location, and great food. So glad to be here. I brought my grandson. We rode the train and visited nearby Cherry Crest Adventure Farm. A perfect get away need to unwind. Allow me to repeat Clean. We travel a great deal and our car was cleaner than many very costly places that we travel. My only input would be perhaps a meal coupon / discount or complimentary ice cream perk. If you ever wondered about or wanted to stay in a caboose, you're in luck. The Red Caboose Motel & Restaurant has a lot of them. Though I didn't stay in one overnight I was in several of them that my friends rented for a "Caboose Party." Hey! We'll make up any excuse to party. Yelper Joni had it right when she said the place is "so roadside America." It's a novelty, it's a fun thing to do and just staying here will give you plenty to chat with your friends about. The two cabooses I was in were the epitome of simplicity. There was nothing fancy about them, but then there shouldn't be. After all, they are cabooses. But they were clean, offered everything one might need, and just downright fun; kind of like camping out. And if you have kids, let me tell you, they'll love it and in the process learn a thing or two about America's railroad history.
