His wonderful elderly mother and current owner were at the bar with good friends. They had free popcorn and a jukebox full of country and rock classics. Okay, it's not "fancy", but the hardwood floor and bar made the place cozy. They're only open Friday and Saturdays. Their can beers were Old Style, Bud, Bud Light and their bottle selection was Blatz, but when in Rome or Monticello just roll with it. For a $1 a Blatz why complain, right? On 9/14/13 (Saturday) they are going to celebrate their 50 year milestone with FREE beer, accordion music, yodeling, and a well known local musician later in the evening. We hope to be there!

Inside it was your typical small town tavern. They had a patio at the back. For happy hour they give you a pull tab. You might pay full price or as little as $0.25 for the round. They offered bottles of New Glarus Brewing, but mainly served domestic cans. We learned the business was named after the owner nicknamed Koolaid (now deceased). We also learned he passed far too young and was the nicest guy you'd ever have met. Linda (the bartender and cook) and Bruce (the bar-back and handyman) were a hoot.

I would recommend the route of getting a few things to share as all the fried foods come in "side" portions (not full appetizer).

On our exploration, we discovered the well stocked tap room in the back of the store and enjoyed a long Thursday "off season" conversation at the bar with the owner, John. This conversation was only made better with a guided tour of the well decorated bathroom and some serious kitten time with the two rescued shop kittens in residence, Shark and Sardine. But they kept the mood alive and cranked out their holiday hospitality as best they could. I loved the Spotted Owl on tap! Cheese curds were hot and tasty. What we didn't know before we got there is that their "thing" are $2 bills. We signed the $2 bills and they were hung on the ceiling. For eats we ordered cheese curds- delish, fried pickles, baked pretzel, fries, chicken tenders, and a steak sandwich which was all pretty good.
