I've recommended this place to so many people in person, it's surprising I haven't yelped about it yet. Andreas and David, to the best of my knowledge, make up the staff at the Ranch, and for my money (which is way less than you'd pay at a downtown SF by-appointment-only stylist/salon place), they do a great job. With all apologies to Andreas, who has a great concept, a great business, and a great attitude, David (to second Daniel W.'s yelp review) is the one who is great at cutting hair. Wow, after reading all those great reviews I wonder if there is anything more to say. However, I want to get my 2 cents in. I have been going to the Ranch in Bon Air for about 6 mos and Leeza has been giving me the greatest cuts. She actually cuts my hair 'dry' which I haven't been able to find since my college days and that was a very long, long time ago, believe me. She seems to know exactly how I want it each time I return so there is no further explaining and my hair always just falls back into place when she is finished. The shop is small and the decor is great, even for us girls, and if Duke, big black lab, is inhouse he will always greet you with a big smile and tail wag. I hate having my hair cut, especially since the one person who did it right retired years ago. So my hair was very long; I got it "pre-chopped" someplace cheap, then went looking for a new "home". I looked around on the internet and decided to take a chance on the Ranch. Leeza was very nice and did her best to match the photo I brought in from years ago. Initiall I wasn't completely happy, it didn't look the same as I remembered, but the next day I woke up and with a quick brushing, my hair fell into place exactly the way I wanted! I'm grateful I took her suggestion of a bit of mousse to hold the style. I just made an appointment to get it cut tomorrow, and will be going there from now on. Please note that I spent a couple of hours on the internet, comparing places, and most of what I encountered was VERY expensive, which the Ranch definitely was not. I came here when I needed a haircut before a business trip and my regular barbershop was closed. I hate to have to write this review, but this was the worst haircut I've gotten in a over a decade. Contrary to other reviews, the place is very clean, well decorated, and the gal cutting my hair was as nice as could be. But I come to a barbership for the haircut and the cut I got was uneven and looked terrible - I would have been better off at SuperCuts. Took my husband here for a quick buzz cut for his hair and beard. Don't get me wrong the woman was very nice and the cut looked good. But $50 for a buzz cut!?!?!?! That is just ridiculous! No wash or anything...just a simple 10-15 minute buzz. That price is just astronomical for what they did. I would not recommend this place simply because of their pricing. Unfortunately, the quality has only gotten worse every time I've visited. First visit was awesome, great haircut at a decent price. Second visit, dog piss on the floor/carpet by the pool table which nobody bothered to clean up; at least I still got a good cut. Third visit (about 6 weeks later), dried dog piss on the floor/carpet by the pool table - foul; haircut ended up fine only after I asked the stylist to go over it twice more. Fourth visit I was 10 minutes late and was turned away. I can only tolerate lackluster conditions and subpar service for so long. I won't be coming back. And it's 2010 and they only take cash: lame. read more

I'm not happy to be writing a review like this but I would've been better off going to Super Cuts. The haircut is bizarre and uneven. And when I talked to them on the phone, I described the haircut I wanted in some detail and said it'd be 26 dollars which included hair wash. They reneged on this and insisted I pay 36 and didn't wash my hair. I definitely wouldn't have come here had they been honest with me. It makes sense why it was so easy to get an appointment at this location and not the others. I definitely do not recommend this place. If you wait a haircut of this level of quality, go to super it's and pay a fraction of the price. The people were otherwise friendly and the place looked cool. read more

Andreas is fantastic! I've gone to him a few times recently because I wanted a more stylish cut than my regular barber gave. He asks me exactly what I want and he takes his time to make sure everything is perfect, which is light years ahead of the 15 minute standard cut you would get elsewhere. The reviews seemed too good to be true so I had to find out for myself. Everything was as billed. Showed up a little early, was offered some rootbeer, and the appointment started on schedule. I always give a new hairdresser total creative freedom on the first go just to see what they're made of. 9 times out of 10 they try to dazzle me with the latest tools and techniques and in the end I'm unimpressed. Andreas skipped that-- just improved on what I already had going, and did it fast and well. Very refreshing, exactly what I wanted. Great cut, great price, great place. My hair was out of control and I waited too long to set an appointment with my regular stylist. My wife was starting to make weird faces every time she looked at me and that is not a good thing. She said get it done today so I searched for walk in mens hair cuts and the reviews for the Ranch looked great. Andreas gave me the last appointment and did a spectacular job on my hair and the price was right. I do not have easy hair to cut what with the hairline and gray and such but Andreas did such an incredible job. IMHO I look fabulous ( and that ain't easy). I have been a customer at the Ranch since it's beginning in 2005. I happened on the salon in San Anselmo on a shopping trip. I had been having my hair done at various salons in San Francisco but was not satisfied. I tried The Ranch out and got a GREAT haircut w/color and have been returning monthly since then. I have since moved from San Francisco and reside in the East Bay so the trip is a bit further but well worth it. I have experienced all three salons and find the ambiance wonderful at all of them. The pictures show the interior very well. You will be pleased. They are clean, the employees friendly and helpful, and the giant screen televsions very entertaining. Over the years I have met many of their customers and have yet to find a disgruntled one. I am sure you will find this a first class extablishment. Andreas cuts my hair but I would have no problem with having any of the stylists do my hair. They are all very professional. The prices are very reasonable for the services performed. read more

It pretty much rocks to play a little nine-ball while waiting for a chair to open up. While I'm with Mark B. and it would be great to have a beer while there, I won't take off a star. Also, it's dubious as to whether beer and barbering mix. There's the old-time story of the minister who was getting a straight-razor shave from a beery barber who knicked him. Awful. simple stuff like "please just do the same" is not possible; stylist Elaine will "borrow" your head of beautiful thick hair to "learn" the great look you walked in with, redo it in reverse, and then - yes- remove it with the clippers. Way above the hairline too, ladies, so you get to wear stubble at the back of the neck for a month. it really doesn't matter that you specifically asked that your hair NOT be cut above the hairline; it will be done anyway. Likewise, thinning shears, and you will be charged for this. Don't bother stopping in to see the manager: he'll close the door in your face and tell you to come back next week. There's something going on at this place that just doesn't feel right. Now three haircutters in a row have "disappeared" in less than the one year I've been going here. First was Luisa, they said she moved out of state. OK. Then Joelle disappeared, I thought that was weird because the last time she cut my hair she had said she planned on staying. When I asked I was told she left to do real estate. Then they put me with Kendra. She wasn't as good as the other ladies, but she was nice. When I booked with her again, they gave me someone else without telling me first, when I asked why I was told she was sick. I don't like explaining my hair every time I get it cut. Well, I just ran into Kendra who told me she's been cutting hair in Novato. Now I feel I've been lied to. I also have seen the owner speak poorly to the other girls who work there. Why lie? If people leave, just tell their clients the truth. This is messed up I'm going to drive to Novato to see Kendra from now on. read more

I have shoulder-length straight (but with some bend) hair that is in an awkward growing out stage, and she made it look great! And all I have to do is get out of the shower and comb it. They need to tell us AT THE DOOR that this shop is for men only. Ladies, do NOT use this place. Men, watch out also. I made a terrible mistake thinking I could get a trim here but the reality is that the stylist , who is named Amber, seems to be mentally impaired or lazy, or both. I actually went to the sink so she could wet my hair and she wasn't even able to do that. I assumed initially that she just wanted it "damp", so I continued with her. She clearly does not know what to do. I came in with a ridiculously uneven grown out hair situation, and needed a good trim. What she actually did was organize her efforts to copy and reproduce it, and it just looks awful. Too lazy to actually cut and style the whole thing, she then collected about a one inch swath of hair from the top and snipped it shorter all around, thereby ruining the crown, also. The clincher came when she asked me if I preferred to wear to the side, or symmetricaI; I answered, "symmetrical". Whereupon she stated, "Oh that's too bad, I already cut it to one side". Just a disgrace. Attention EVERYBODY: This shop can not be used, or at least not when that stylist is on duty. WOMEN OF MARIN COUNTY: Never. read more

I recently had a haircut at the Ranch in San Anselmo by Andreas, the owner. I reflected on the fact that it has been 7-years since I wandered into the Ranch for my initial haircut. From that day to this the Ranch is the only hair salon that has cut my hair. My experience has always been excellent - Andreas places the very highest of standards on himself and his employees, he is unbending on customer satisfaction and providing a quality haircut, maintains very clean and well-appointed salons and always has a friendly demeanor and a sincere interest that his customers have a good experience. I have followed Andreas as he has built his business from the San Anselmo location to now include Bon Air in Greenbrae and the new Mill Valley location. Andreas is establishing himself as the model of a small businessman who is growing his business in Marin.
