"Cornbury Estate venison haunch, swede mash, kale, salt-baked celeriac, red wine and blackberries 699 kcal " Is 'Cornbury Estate' supposed to mean something to venison aficionados? I am always suspicious when the menu has to use grandiose descriptions to impress when no one is actually going to know what it means. The few times I have ordered venison in the past, I was asked how I wanted it - which for venison everyone knows is either rare or medium rare. I was not asked, so assumed at least it was going to come pink in the middle. What I was served was a kind of medallion but a token nod to a Wellington - encased in a soggy, slightly raw, unappetizing pastry. (This is not described on the menu). The meat was overcooked and not even slightly pink in the middle, and the whole dish was rather a sad offering - especially considering the £26.90 price. Trying to impress with an artistic presentation, but definitely style over substance. The dish was served lukewarm and the service was slow and not particularly friendly. I complained politely but firmly about the venison and ordered Mac Cheese (which I thought a safe option) and this came within five minutes so must have been ready to go. It was again pretty awful, one solid mass (not soft and creamy at all) and not very hot. The Mac Cheese could more or less be picked up in one lump. The photo shows the venison and as can be seen, even if it had been worth eating, for the price, it wasn't exactly a hearty portion. At 699 calories, most people would probably need a side dish as the portion size is pretty meagre. One of the worst meals I have ever had in a supposedly high-end restaurant. After complaining about both dishes, the outcome was that the duty manager was called to the table and after a brief discussion, where I gave my opinion of the food in a quiet and measured way (no shouting, swearing or offensive personal comments) and was told to leave the premises. I was shocked at this action - surely an over- reaction? Isn't one of the roles of a manager to resolve conflicts to reach an amicable outcome? Unfortunately, it was very early (about 6:30 pm) and there was only one couple at a table far from mine, so no other diners could witness this action - I am sure the manager would have tried to resolve the situation in another way if there had been other diners nearby as it would not have been good for business.

People - Fantastic, really loved the helpfulness and authenticity of all the staff here Location - Right in the thick of the action in a nice little market town with plenty of shops and things to see.. Food - From the full English incl. black pudding to the liver and onion and MASSIVE fish n chips portions, the food really hit and excelled the mark. I suspect this place prides and aims at gastro pub status as their benchmark. Room - We were in #12 an attic room, for the first night we felt it was quaint and nice but by the 2nd night it was wearing on us a bit being small, dark, very limited airflow and with extremely low ceilings so wasn't easy to traverse.. We also had an issue with the bathroom having no vanity area, no towel rail and the radiator in the bedroom made such a racket I thought we were above the kitchen exhausts. As an alternative view, my uncle and aunt stayed in one of the other rooms and loved it which was also cheaper than #12 for some strange reason. So overall, really pleased we picked this establishment, we would use it again and highly recommend it BUT perhaps we would suggest avoiding #12 :-)

This is my second visit to the hotel, and I splurge this time on a room called the room with a view. An amazing patio of more than 500 ft.² greet to you as you walk into the room outside floor ceiling windows and doors. The room is super tech savvy with almost all functions controlled from a panel on the wall next to the desk. This includes automated lowering and raising of blinds for the floor ceiling windows, as well as closing and opening full length draperies for the same. The bathroom is super spacious with double sink vanities in a large walk-in shower. This would be a wonderful room for anyone to celebrate the holidays in. It's equipped with a super comfy king size bed, and down comforter. There's also two couches in the room, facing the large picture windows and a small round table with two chairs for indoor dining. But the patio is unreal and includes a larger outdoor dining table for four and two large chase lounges. What makes this room so spectacular is the views of Saint Mary's church and the whole of Oxford University. Aspires of Oxford are magical and at night it's absolutely spectacular. Everything about this hotel is five star from the service the moment you check in until you check out. Room service is fast and efficient as is maid service in the mornings. Included with the room is a fully stocked mini bar and wine refrigerator. that's updated daily. You're also given a large platter of super fresh fruit, that is also refreshed daily. There's a hot pot for making tea and a really nice coffee pod machine that makes espresso. The wall opposite the bed sports a large flat panel TV. Location of the old bank hotel is prime real estate in the center of high Street in the middle of shops, pubs and restaurants. Cross the street and you are immediately on the grounds of Oxford University a wonderful place for exploring. Can't say enough about this hotel, the physical aspects, the service, and the location. I will always choose this place when I'm in Oxford.

Everything tasted good, even more so with a relaxing atmosphere and interesting table neighbors. Service was pleasant, but oddly fast on the food coming out, while slow for the drinks. That Lunch was around 3 PM and we very much appreciated that their kitchen was open all day. We were seated within a nice cozy room by a fireplace, which allowed us to settle in, relax, and talk about our walks ahead. Very few people come to the UK for the food (or the weather) and in hindsight we had several solid, albeit somewhat unremarkable meals during our 2 weeks in the UK. Our Redesdale Lunch version was a Longhorn Beef Burger for both of us, plus white wine for Gayle and a wee pint form me. It was the right choice at the right time, and part of a very enjoyable meal together. A few UK cultural observations: 1. Most restaurant tabs have an optional service charge attached, usually between 9 and 13%. As we live in a tipping culture, we accepted the charge, paid our bill and moved on. 2. Most tap beers are at room temperature and I favored the bitter version, as this version was a bit darker and robust. If I wanted more, Guinness was usually available. Beer at the bar is often dispensed via a pumping action vs. a straight tap. A given Pub would also feature a local set of bears or ones representing the chain owning them. 3. There is practically no pressure to turn tables in a restaurant or be in any hurry to have you pay the tab. A lot of the time, we got up ourselves and found the person to pay.
