I love this store, it's just so much fun being here! You can find great gifts here at the Plaid Giraffe. Some people might find the items generic, but I argue they are anything but. There are many items that your family and friends will most likely get a kick out of. Most of it is for the female population though (as like most stores). The Plaid Giraffe carries Nine & Co. bags from Nine West, unique scarves, jewelry (wow, do they have jewelry), and other neat gift items. As I made my way through the store recently, one guy was browsing as well and, while his girlfriend paid for her brand new bag at the counter, he was picking up one item after another and saying "How sweet is this?!?" again and again. I have to admit, it was pretty amusing. But then, so is their selection. Among their items that will make you laugh and gasp are barbed wire toilet paper (TP with a barbed wire design on it) and -- get this -- a hair-coloring kit specifically for your "hair down there". I'm dead serious! I had never seen anything like it before. I mean, who does that? Not that I'm judging or anything ... hey, it's something new! But the colors available were electric blue, pink, and orange. Whoa, now there's somethin' freaky going on there! My favorite thing about the Plaid Giraffe though, is their jewelry, which is pretty much the inner half of the shop. They have it all color-coded, so there are your blues, then purples, and black and whites, and so on. Some of it is a little pricey, but it depends on what materials it has, right? I find that most of their earrings start at $9.99 and go up from there. They've also got a wide selection of those neat purse-hanger things that have been popping up everywhere. The idea is that you basically hang part of it on the edge of a table, and it has a hook that your bag can hang from. Your bag won't be on the floor and get dirty, and has its own place. The Plaid Giraffe also carries items that make great traveler gifts, if you are shopping for a globe-trotter. They have typical items like travel pillows, but with and fun designs, so they're not as boring. Anyway, that's just a peek at what they have in store. I've heard of this store from one of my good friends who loves this place. Actually she has this leather bag that she got from The Plaid Giraffe and I love it maybe more than she does! It's a really nice bag but it's a couple of years old now and the store no longer carries one like it. They have some really nice other bags though but not like my friends so I, personally, wasn't really interested. I did like their cute wallets made from different colored leather with fun designs or patterns on them. They have a lot of accessories. Their whole back half of the store is devoted to accessories. I found some great earrings that I've been looking for at some good prices; one pair was $9.99 and the other pair (a pair of square ones; I actually don't own square shaped earrings!) for $11.99. They have a lot of really nice but not too expensive looking jewelry. Their store is really nice and net with lots of open areas so you can actually breath. The two girls that were working were really nice and super friendly. They let me look around in peace without bugging me or pressuring me to buy something; it was really nice to just to my thing. read more

I'm not really crazy about The Plaid Giraffe's selection of purses; they are just not my style; however, they do carry these really neat oversized purses, lunch bags, and wallets designed by this funky St. Albert store. They are decorated with these cut out shapes of fruits, monkeys, flowers, and even a woman riding a bicycle! I would love one of the lunch bags, but do I really need to spend $25 on a lunch bag? Not really. I also love the accessories here. There are so many beautiful and neat bracelets, necklaces, earings, and hair accessories. I found these awesome plaid clips for my hair--they are so cute and made in Canada too! The Plaid Giraffe also sells some really weird items. Like Lauren, I also saw the pubic hair dye. That stuff is totally crazy and hilarious. It makes me laugh just thinking about it. I also saw a chocolate pen, but I don't understand what will happen once you eat the pen, or even how a person is supposed to resist eating the pen, while using the pen. This independent jewelery store is one of my favorites. I don't feel as if they fit a certain mold. The jewelery they sell could be for anyone, young or old, and whatever kind of style you are looking for: casual, dressy, or everyday wear. I love that this store is organized by color options. It is a very simple way to find things. I often decide on the color of jewelery that I need when I am looking for a new piece. I also like that everything is laid out, and there is often only one set per item. It makes it feel as if what I am buying is one of a kind. (I am sure they have other sets in the back.. so no need to fight over an item ladies!) This place has more than just earring and necklaces too. I fell in love with the Plaid Giraffe the moment I saw their selection of nerdy jewelry... Darth Vader, Lord of the Rings, and Harry Potter necklaces, Deathly Hallows necklaces, need I say more?! And to top that off they were cheap to boot! Way cheaper than they would be online or even in other stores. There's a huge array of jewellery to pick from here. Necklaces, bracelets, and earrings, oh my! There's classic pieces like pearls, useful pieces like watches, quirky pieces like the nerd jewellery. Even if you don't really like jewellery, there's something in here for you! And all of it is at an awesome price! I cannot sing the praises of this place enough. It's a perfect store for Whyte. This independent accessory store is my favorite stop when im cruising down Whyte Ave! They smartly have all their jewelry organized by color making it easy for you to come in and find what you need without having to pick through multiple racks like you would at a Claire's store. The prices can run a bit steep depending on what your looking at picking up but take my word for it it is well worth the price due to how well made their products are. My earrings take ALOT of abuse (e.g falling out of my ear and onto the floor when im at work) and I have never had any bent backs or crystals fall out. Staff here is lovely :-) They are friendly and approachable but not the kind who breathe down your neck if you say your just browsing. It's also nice to see the same people every time I go in. I hear the owner of the store treats the staff well hence why so many have been there long term. read more

The giraffe is my favourite animal, so it was inevitable that the Plaid Giraffe and I would meet and fall in love some day. A big selection of bags in front (if that's your style) and the best jewelry collection in the city (well, because it's all my style). I scored the cutest pair of fake Chanel earrings, little studs in the shape of the C with little crystals all around (in the "sparkly" section - very helpful organization). Very pretty and a total deal. Also, the sales girl was awesome about helping me picking out which pair I wanted and really patient while I decided. I love that! I think one of the best aspects of Whyte Avenue is the selection of unusual stores that carry giftware as well as more unusual and wonderful wares. The Plad Giraffe is no exception. I can always count on it to be a fun store to browse. Not only do they carry some really rad jewelrey, but they have some great handbags (many of which by Matt & Nat a Montreal brand that is vegan), giftware and other more unusual things (the last time I was there we oogled the Hello Kitty candy for example). While I don't always find what I'm looking for here, I definitely find interesting items that can often give me better ideas of for what I'm looking (especially if I'm looking for gifts). read more

The plaid giraffe is a store I love browsing in as much as buying. They always have interesting things that I wouldn't even think existed. Their jewelry selection is great and affordable - if you need a specific colour I find they're the best place to go as they seem to always have such a great variety. I've noticed they stopped stocking as many varieties of purses which was a bit disappointing for me but that very well might be cyclical too. :) a great local business! read more

I love browsing at this store- they have such an extensive selection of jewellery and accessories, and they carry beautiful Matt and Nat bags. They also carry some unique knick knacks that are sure to make you laugh :) All of their jewellery is arranged by colour and is displayed very clearly, which makes shopping and buying a breeze! Their prices are very reasonable and you can easily find earrings for between $10-15. Sometimes I find that their jewellery is a bit flashy for me, but this is definitely a shop that is worth stopping by! read more

Plaid Giraffe is a cute store that sells bags, wallets and accessories. I think that all the items sold here are geared towards younger females, but I enjoyed browsing this store nonetheless. At the front of the store you will find purses by Samsara and travel bags by Lug - a brand that allows you to travel in style as their travel accessories are practical and come in a range of bright colorful. As you proceed towards the back of the store, you will see beautifully displayed jewelry. Inexpensive, fun looking jewelry in an array of colors. Most of the pieces are priced at $20 or less, so if you want to stock up, you can go ahead and do that, and you will end up with enough jewelry to accessorize any outfit in your wardrobe. I have purchased a necklace made with red stones and a wooden bracelet. I found customer service at Plain Giraffe nonexistent. Two girls at the counter minded their business and didn't even bother saying "hello". Whatever, I will shop here anyway when I am in need of cheap thrills. read more

This used to be one of my favourite stops along Whyte Ave, but not anymore. I don't know what happened, but this shop used to have the best selection of accessories, and stuff you wouldn't find anywhere else, and it was reasonably priced. Now it's all pretty generic looking things for way too much. ($40 for a pair of earrings that look like they're from claire's?) I bought a necklace for a friend of mine for her birthday a while ago, and it snapped right in her hands as she took it out of the bag. She didn't even get a chance to try it on. We took it back to the store to exchange it, and all of the other necklaces had a crack where hers had broken. I had always loved the shop, so I went back anyway. I bought a pair of earrings, and the first time I wore them, a piece just broke off. I took them back the next day and explained what had happened, and they said that because of their return policy for earrings there was nothing I could do. It's really a shame, this used to be my favourite spot in the city to shop for accessories. read more

I agree with Fran S- used to be a great and friendly little store with lots of great affordable stuff. The quality and variety have gone down and the staff ignores you. I was in there 2 days ago- the ONLY one in the store- and I walked by both staff at the desk and neither one said hello. One of them even looked up and made eye contact and then looked back down without even a "hi". Every other store on Whyte I went to had great friendly staff. Won't bother again. read more

Kind of a neat little shop on Whyte. They used to have all kinds of treasures but the pickings seem slimmer and slimmer. They have Matt & Nat's Samsara - just like everyone else. They also have the Harvey seatbelt bags, but these could be had for 50% off after Christmas. Also they carry an awesome selection of Lug bags. All kinds of jewelery at the back, which is great. Service is where they really lose points. Barely a "hello". I don't know exactly what it is, the staff or layout, but I certainly do not linger in there. Hard to browse. read more

My husband often takes my children to the Plaid Giraffe to buy me Mother's Day and Birthday gifts. I love the jewelry and purses. Today I went to the shop to buy some Christmas gifts. At the till I saw that they had a draw, and was filling out the slip to put my name in as my purchases were being rung up. The women asked me if I was a part of Yelp shop local, and I wasn't sure what she was talking about. She informed me that I must not be since I did not know what she was speaking of and that the draw was only for "yelp shop locally" customers. I felt a bit silly as I stood there while she finished ringing up my purchases. Next a man walked up and commented to the lady at the till as I was using my interac card that the bracelets I was purchasing were marked incorrectly and that they were way under cost. He seemed very annoyed and kept going on about how it was her Mothers fault, that she grossly under marked them. I again felt very foolish standing there as they went on about what a big deal it was that the bracelets were marked incorrectly and that I was getting them for so cheap. I did spend $45 on top of the bracelets and had also sent my brother a picture of a $100 purse that I suggested he come and buy for his wife for Christmas. Needless to say, he won't be going there to buy the purse. I felt very embarrassed leaving the store, as both employees we rude about their mistake and made me feel as if I had done something wrong. There is a very good chance that I will not go back, nor will my husband or Brother. read more
