I so want to give Whitmuir five stars as I love the place so much, yet they always seem chronically…read moreunderstaffed, resulting in the service being a little... well, let's say "laid back" at times. But don't let that put you off, just make sure you allow plenty of time if you are coming to eat. Situated in the middle of nowhere, they are a fully organic farm selling their own meat and veg, with a fantastic range of other organic products in their farm shop; and they also use nearly all their own produce in their lovely cafe. If you are passing, make a point of stopping off here to browse in the shop or have a snack. If you are on the south side of Edinburgh, it's only 20 minutes or so in the car to get here and is well worth the effort. I had a couple of hours free, so I drove out from Edinburgh for lunch. On the menu, the hake and fennel fishcakes caught my eye, so I ordered those with some sweet potato wedges on the side. The fishcakes were delicious (even if they did have to buy those in), as were the sweet potato wedges. With a Belvoir ginger beer to wash it down, I was well satisfied. As I wasn't in a rush, I decided to follow with a slice of polenta cake and a coffee. The cake was a little on the dry side - I guess maybe polenta cake isn't their best-seller - and the coffee, although perfectly fine, was maybe not the best I've ever had. But the place was quiet, and for under £20 it was a pretty reasonable and high-quality lunch. So do go and patronise this place, they are doing wonders on a shoestring to promote organic farming practices and food; it so deserves your support. They do home delivery organic veg boxes too - what are you waiting for?

The name kinda gives you a clue as what to look for and sure enough there is a big red barn - funny that! But the wee cafe inside said barn is really well done, light and airy in pale blues, natural wood and lots of white. The cake table is very cleverly positioned between the door and the seating meaning you have to peruse the cakeage on your way to sitting down. Another place diets go to die, my favourite! The staff were quick, pleasant and chatty when we initiated conversation. I prefer it that way, I hate having to endure small talk when the kids are causing havoc and I'm in serious danger of D&T's from caffeine deprivation. They get it just right in here and lots of kudos for that. Everybody was delighted with their cake and drink, especially smudge who went all out with a hot chocolate and a chocolate brownie. She was particularly fun in the car on the way home with all that sugar coursing through her system. Because of course the very idea of having to share her cake with anyone brought tears to her eyes - I fear she may be far too like her mother! My flat white was perfection and the date slice was the best I have had since my friends Granny died - no date slice will beat Granny B's but this came close. If you find yourself on the A702, well you never know you might need to hot foot it from Abington to Edinburgh) it is well worth a pit stop at the Big Red Barn just don't try and bypass the cake table, you'll only regret it!
