Soup was pleasant though not exceptional, served with a very cheap white roll which was fresh but not nice. Should just underline - it's proper coffee and well made, so if that's what you're after this is a great place. Price: The traditional breakfast is £8.90! Including coffee, but still. Jacket with cheese and beans £6.50. Toasties all over £4.50. So, not outrageous but for the quality not great. Finally, ambience: the radio in the kitchen is playing bad rock music from Radio 1 coupled with the ranting of a day time DJ and jingles. It is audible throughout the cafe, the staff chatting behind the counter the only other noise. The fridges hum and some of the tables have got staff working at them preparing for tomorrow I guess (we're here latish in the day). It's not outrageous, but it makes it distinctly less homely to be here. So overall, somewhere that is perfectly passable and definitely not bad, but not somewhere I'd go out of my way to spend time. After two nights and a wonderful day in Edinburgh, it was time to continue our three week epic…read morethrough the British Isles by heading to Manchester. We left Scotland's capital at about ten o'clock and took nearly 45 minutes to escape the city, primarily due to tour buses and commercial vehicles on the Royal Mile. But escape the capital we did, and once we passed the City Of Edinburgh Bypass, we suddenly found ourselves seemingly in the middle of nowhere. Quite the contrast to cities in America that seem to stretch out forever. The A702 took us through a series of towns, eventually depositing us in the village of Biggar, where it was time to refresh ourselves. Now, one would think this would be a perfect java experience. In the midst of rural Scotland on a very green country road, picturesque small town, quaint architecture. But something wasn't quite right - perhaps the cashier had had a bad start to her morning, but she just didn't seem too excited to be serving us. Perhaps it was our West Coast Accents. Perhaps it was because we knew what we wanted when we ordered. Or maybe she just sucked. Regardless, we didn't seem very welcome here, so we collected our order and proceeded south. We stopped in here on the way home from a wee afternoon out in Peebles. It is in a funny location…read morein the middle of nowhere and that is coming from Carluke's resident yelper! The name kinda gives you a clue as what to look for and sure enough there is a big red barn - funny that! But the wee cafe inside said barn is really well done, light and airy in pale blues, natural wood and lots of white. The cake table is very cleverly positioned between the door and the seating meaning you have to peruse the cakeage on your way to sitting down. Another place diets go to die, my favourite! The staff were quick, pleasant and chatty when we initiated conversation. I prefer it that way, I hate having to endure small talk when the kids are causing havoc and I'm in serious danger of D&T's from caffeine deprivation. They get it just right in here and lots of kudos for that. Everybody was delighted with their cake and drink, especially smudge who went all out with a hot chocolate and a chocolate brownie. She was particularly fun in the car on the way home with all that sugar coursing through her system. Because of course the very idea of having to share her cake with anyone brought tears to her eyes - I fear she may be far too like her mother! My flat white was perfection and the date slice was the best I have had since my friends Granny died - no date slice will beat Granny B's but this came close. If you find yourself on the A702, well you never know you might need to hot foot it from Abington to Edinburgh) it is well worth a pit stop at the Big Red Barn just don't try and bypass the cake table, you'll only regret it!
