It was *packed* and there was a "regulated" frenzy lining up to get thy brew and chew. Counting seconds, minutes, and "hours" (just kidding, it moved fast), chatting up everyone and anyone when you've got absolutely nothing to do until it was your turn to find saving grace from one of the grinders spewing life changing atoms of goodness. Everyone was respectful no matter how groggy they looked. And it all made sense when I got to the pivot in the line. There was a sign that sublimely declared all Karens to keep their best behavior or simply be thrown out. I couldn't for the life of me contain my laughter. I was joined by the few I had already bantered with the last 15 minutes. They, as locals, told me that the establishment protected their employees and would gladly enforce that particular placard any day. GOOD. We don't want them around here anyways. It's already a miracle that someone, or anyone, is willing to wake up more than a few hours earlier to serve anyone barely waking up to their senses. Lucas Roasting Company is a small bisiness tucked away in Wolfboro. Pretty standard coffee drinks but #IYKYK - some of the best coffee comes from small roasting companies. I ended up with a delicous iced coffee and took some canned nitro back with me to CT. This year - again we hiked up (and down) Mount Roberts but this year it was H O T - so it was a no brainer where to head to for some caffine and cooling off. This year I met who I think was one of the owners who gave me the origin story (they are originally from VA) and told me that they have been open for a bit over 3 years. There was no cold brew in the cooler but this time it was a Nitro Cold Brew that was ordered and consumed before we made it back to our lodgings. I wish they were closer but it's good to know that they are "just down the road" from my yearly hiking venue.

A few years back, I was in the area visiting another business and recognized Tandem's bicycle logo and immediately became intrigued. I soon discovered that they had a second location here, and told myself if I was ever in the area again I would step in. During this most recent Maine trip, I was making a few last minute stops before heading home, and thought this was as great opportunity to check little Tandem out and get some plural peps. Right from the jump, I noticed the vibe at Tandem Roasters was different. The big Tandem on Congress is large, usually always has a line, and has a large selection of food in addition to the coffee. This Tandem is smaller and more chill - the main floor has some seating around the perimeter, with a smaller room off to the side with more seating. In addition to their merch, they have a decent selection of vinyls to browse. The vibe is overall more chill here - I had time to browse and soak in the aesthetics, whereas you're kinda shuffled down the line at the larger Tandem due to the crowds. The menu is mostly coffee and related beverages; they have a small selection of bakes but it's not nearly as large as their other location. I had already had breakfast, so I decided just to go with a cappuccino. The beverage was good - everything you want out of a cappuccino. Service was also good, I was taken care of promptly and my beverage was ready relatively quickly. Overall, I'm glad I finally got to check this Tandem out. It's a little off the beaten path of the main commercial hub of Portland, however there are a few businesses in the area so it's worth checking out if you're in the area.

What really caught me off guard was when I politely asked if they could write "Happy Birthday" on one of the cups. The response was a scoff and a no. I completely understand that not every request can be accommodated, but the reaction felt unnecessarily dismissive, especially since the shop wasn't busy and I was the first customer of the morning, about 15 minutes after opening. Small gestures like that can make someone's day, and I thought it was a simple, fun request for a birthday surprise. Other coffee shops in the area would likely have been happy to help make the occasion special. First impressions matter, and unfortunately, this one fell a little flat. I may give it another try someday, but based on this first visit, I left underwhelmed.
