So here's how you need to do it at Pitstop Catering. Start with the cornbread, move to the mac n cheese, and then on to the meat. Had I done it the other way, I may not have had room left over for the desert-like cornbread that stole the show! Light, fluffy, and moist, it tastes like a vanilla cupcake with only a hint of corn taste. I know, I know, that sounds weird, but you gotta give it a try. In addition to this amazing side, their mac n cheese is thick, gloppy, and chunky, just the way homemade mac-n-cheese should be. I ordered the shredded jalapeno chicken wrap for lunch and found the chicken to spicy, warm, tender and wrapped in a flour wrap. The jalapenos kicked up the spice factor and topped with their BBQ sauce it was a tasty meal. Big in size, my lunch was a great value and filled me up all day. Located on 28th Street, Pitstop was already a successful local catering company when they recently decided to open their doors a few days a week to the lunch and dinner crowds. FIRST - ONLY OPEN ON THURSDAYS for walkups. The rest of the time they're doing catering or taking catering orders. So, just plan your life around this :) I got turned onto this place after posting about the Slows opening downtown. I'm glad I made it out here. I think I've tried everything there now. Their brisket, combined with their sauce gave me some memorable, "I need to stop talking and just enjoy this" moments. I'm not normally a sausage guy but I wanted to at least try it and it was fabulous. A little kick to it but nothing distracting. The pork is nice and smokey and also works well with their sauce which is probably my favorite local sauce other than maybe that "dog" sauce at Two Scotts. I lucked out and they were doing ribs and from the first little bite, you knew that your meal was in good hands. The owner said, "Sometimes people say they can make a rack of ribs just as good and I always tell them that they probably can make one really good rack of ribs. I made over 200 in the last couple days." And he's right. It's the consistency of quality that will make this place stand out. Apparently they cater like CRAZY and eating there made me want to think of a reason for a party for them to cater. The owner said they've started doing a Mac n Cheese bar sometimes where you can add stuff like bacon, peppers, etc... to your Mac n Cheese. Holy great idea... Speaking of the sides. I'm not a baked beans person but I at least tried them and they were really unique. Pretty sweet and quite smoky. I liked them more than I normally like baked beans but I'm probably not a good measure on this one. The cole slaw, mashed potatoes and mac n cheese were all VERY good although not particularly unique. The cole slaw is a good mix between creamy and vinegar. Not thick but also not overpoweringly vinegar. The mashed potatoes had something in them...maybe some onions or celery? Good stuff. Not a big presence but it's there. And the mac n cheese has a nice strong cheese flavor. I feel like so much of the mac n cheese mostly tastes like noodles but their cheese comes through. I feel like this menu overall is stronger than the other places in town. Everything, including the sides and sauces is more consistently great. It also seemed noticeably less expensive. Not a lot less but... I'm told I need to give Horseshoe another chance and I will. And Dallas Deli. Haven't been back there for years! I really do feel like you'll get some really good stuff at any of the places in town though. This one just does more things better. There are not a lot of bbq restaurants in GR, so we were very excited that this pit stop was just 5 minutes from us! When we walked in however, I was a little confused with the set up. There was a section to the left with swag (tshirts, sweatshirts, etc), and to the right were people standing up and eating on a railing like they were cattle. Straight ahead was a counter with aluminum trays filled with food.... looked like a buffet. We didn't realized that this was a temporary set up. Nonetheless, we were going to order food! The young girl working behind the counter was friendly and explained the current concept to us. As she was talking, she scratched her nose with her gloved hands.....gross. As I glanced at my husband, my food safety side started to come out. We ordered our food and before I could ask her to change her gloves, she was scooping food into our mini compartmentalized to-go trays. Luckily, she was using large spoons, so wasn't actually touching our food, but she clearly forgot that she was wearing gloves for a reason. The guy behind the counter was not friendly at all. He especially didn't seem to like when I asked for pieces of brisket that weren't too fatty...yes, I know brisket is a fatty cut of meat, but I also don't want to eat all fat. We took our food home to eat so that we could actually sit down and enjoy it. Once home, the food was just ok. The brisket was definitely too fatty and the mac & cheese was nothing to write home about--it was overcooked and bland. The baked beans were the best part of the meal. They were sweet, savory, and really tasty! They had been recommended to us by the staff....good call! My husband had the cole slaw and beans with the pulled pork. The pork wasn't too bad, but I've definitely had more tender, flavorful pork elsewhere. The cole slaw had no flavor and was warm (it was a mayo- based dressing, so I was a bit worried....) I was also not impressed with the bbq sauce. I'm a sauce girl; I love having several sauces to choose from and dip in! Their side of bbq sauce tasted very ketchup-y. The location is in a plaza, setback quite a bit from the main road so it is easy to miss. My husband and I stopped here for a quick lunch date around noon and it was quite busy. We both ordered the two meat platters which came with two sides. Naturally, I chose the mac and cheese for one, and green beans for the other. The mac and cheese wad delicious- classic, a little tang - perfect. The green beans were over the top salty which I was really bummed about. For the meats I chose chicken and brisket- both of which were delicious. But sadly, they do not offer burnt ends which everyone knows is the best part of BBQ. For anyone following me on Yelp, you know I'm a connoisseur of great BBQ, an avid cook, and that I compete once or twice a year in local BBQ contests sponsored by the Kansas City BBQ Association. Since moving to the Grand Rapids area four years ago, I've tried every BBQ joint around only to be greatly disappointed on a number of levels. Although GR has seen many new BBQ establishments pop up in the past year or two, most are mediocre at best. However, about two weeks ago my company needed a caterer to deliver lunch for 20 people. I had never tried the food from Pit Stop BBQ but had heard and read great things about them, so I called and ordered the food for our working lunch. Matt, the owner of Pit Stop personally delivered the food to our conference room; pulled pork, beef brisket, baked beans, green beans w/toasted almonds and garlic, cole slaw, rolls, and their own house-made tortilla chips. The smell was fantastic! After our guests (from Seattle, WA) had been served and began to eat they all began raving about the food, indicating it was by far the best BBQ they have ever had. I made a plate for myself, and Wow!!, it knocked my socks off. It was truly a "hallelujah moment." Generally at working business lunches with a room full of executives, not a lot of food gets eaten. However, this day everyone had seconds and thirds, and all the food containers were left completely empty. The following day I returned the serving utensils to Pit Stop. Matt greeted me at the door and gave me a large container containing a variety of the BBQ and sides they were serving that day. I was speechless at the outstanding taste, freshness, and quality of all the food items he gave me to try. By far this is the BEST BBQ in the Grand Rapids area. Their restaurant is only open Thursday and Fridays, and you can generally expect to wait in line to get in the door, but the food you receive will make you want to come back and wait in line again. The lunch options for actual working people, who have actual work to do, is absolutely aggravating on the cascade end of 28th street. Sure, if you are not a critical component of your company you can just sit around and do nothing waiting for food at ganders, smokey bones, or sundance. But for the real people who do the real things that make the things actually happen, we got a wendy's and panera to joust for in the parking lot arenas. Except on thursday and friday, the real hunger games begin. Pit stop opens at 11am. GET THERE BEFORE your office neighbor shows up with an order for a dozen 2 meat platters. To be honest the offerings are not going to be the best ever compared to other smoke houses or bbq places around the greater area. They are simply the absolute best if not the only thing happening on this side of town and they own it. You get a great big box piled with honestly prepared foods. And it usually gets served up and out the door faster than anywhere up and down the street. Why is that so hard to accomplish? Why cant we have more amazing places like this? A recent revisit didn't disappoint. After several years from my initial visit when this place was new and the quality was still in the works, the Pit Stop has certainly changed for the best. It's not often that every part of a mixed plate is good, usually there's one or two things that aren't the best tasting. However, between two different platters, every one of the different foods was delicious. And when they said the Reaper Baked Beans were hot, they were darn HOT, not some lame Mid-West Michigan where's-the-spice hot. I had the corned beef, brisket, sausage, Reaper baked beans, spicy corn bread, macaroni and cheese, and a super decedant brownie with what I assume was smoked pork pieces on top. I would have never found this place if my coworkers didn't tell me about it. I used to work less than a mile away but had no clue it was there, maybe partly due to the short window of operation. Its only open Thursday and Friday so you definitely need to get there before noon if you wanna get a table. 12-14$ is a bit pricey for a weekday lunch, but the food and portion size are completely worth it. Each time I've been there I had enough food to bring home for a second lunch. I've tried the brisket, chicken, and pulled pork and everything was amazing. Huge selection of sides that you'd expect from a BBQ joint. Surprisingly what everyone always rants about is the cornbread muffins.
