We arrived mid-day on a Friday so it was not busy and we had our choice of table. After walking around the wildlife park we were chilled so sat in the bar directly in front of the fire. The quiet murmur of the other patrons, some music playing softly from the restaurant, a couple of drinks and warmth of the fire - I almost couldn't get my husband to leave. He's from the UK but has been living in the states for 30 years and this is exactly what he has missed. We had a nice chat with one of the managers, unfortunately I didn't get his name, and he showed us the horses grazing in the pasture out back. We both had the steak and ale pie on special, it was beautifully prepared and tasty. We were checked on several times to make sure we had everything we needed. This will be at the top of our list to return to on our next visit.

Friendly staff, good food, good range of beers etc. We visited for Sunday lunch. There is a huge carvery with all the trimmings as well as the usual menu. Pretty good value (for the New Forest). As well as plenty of indoor seating there's a large beer garden and a well kept (and fenced) play area for the kiddies. Space for a functions marquee too! Car parking is shared with the station next door (free).

We were hungry for some food, so we instead headed over to Riverview Restaurant inside The Master Builder's. The Master Builder's is more of a hotel than a restaurant, with a gorgeous view of the water. It is located right by the Beaulieu River. Even on a rainy and windy day, it was still very picturesque. Once we stepped inside, it felt as if we walked into some kind of historic building. And, rightfully so, as this is a historic hotel. They had a continental buffet set up in the main dining area. They had cereals, granola, baked goods, cheese and charcuterie platters, juice, yogurt, etc. Pretty nice selection. And what's better than looking at these selections? Being able have them without any added cost to your breakfast order of your choice! What! Their menu is plenty, but with simple pricing method. You either get the continental breakfast buffet with tea, coffee, and toast for one price, or add Full Cooked Breakfast to it with just a big more. As for "full cooked breakfast," we went with The Master Builder's Full English breakfast. It comes with Sausage, Smoked Bacon, Grilled Tomato, Mushroom, Black Pudding, Fried Bread and choice of Fried, Scrambled or Poached free range egg. I went with poached egg. One change we've made to our order was, exchanging Black Pudding with White Pudding. They were all very tasty, only thing was that the poached egg was a bit over-cooked... Other than that, it was really nice! Portion was great too. We had a really nice brunch here with lovely company, the service was polite and although bit slow, we were well taken care of. It was very relaxing and serene. Must be super popular during the warm/hot season!

But, the starter I had was rather lacklustre - I had the crispy duck pancakes. The crispy duck was so overcooked that I couldn't bite into it, it was that tough. The entree (mains) was pretty good, for the most part. It was a Sunday Roast, so we had our choice of various types of proteins (the sides were the same for each dish though - mashed squash, parsnip, broccoli, boiled potatoes & a yorkshire pudding .. oh and an ocean of gravy) - pork, beef, chicken fish or vegetarian nut-loaf. I had the pork roast and though the meat was cooked quite well, I was very underwhelmed with the pork crackling provided. I had an itty-bitty square of pork crackling, it was so miniscule that it just wasn't worth it. Because we were a fairly largish group (10 adults, 2 kids) the service was a tad slow between courses. And for the mains the 2 kids were served last. Generally this isn't a good idea, as kids can get rather cranky if not fed, but thankfully the kids this time round were pretty good, nibbling other people's food until their actual meals came out. Overall the place is pretty good, price was very decent and the service was rather pleasant. I would like to come back one more time, not on a Sunday, to see what they are like. I really wanted their Beef Bourguignon, but sadly it was unavailable on a Sunday.
