The Ox Row Inn

The Ox Row Inn

We stopped in for one more drink before turning in for the night…read more This was suggested by our sever from dinner at the News Cafe. Ox Row Inn is located conveniently in the main central square area, so we also got to see cute bits of the town on our walk there. It was cozy and inviting inside, very "ye olde pub" feeling. The upstairs dining rooms were enchanting looking. We each got a drink and found a table without a reserved sign on it (they had pub trivia starting about an hour and a half after our arrival, but almost all tables were empty but reserved...I am still wrapping my head around the reservation thing at pubs!) and settled in to enjoy our drinks. A cider for my Fella, and a spritzy cocktail for me. Both lovely. We considered staying for trivia, but were just too tired. I started finding myself annoyed at most pubs and restaurants we went to where the mens toilets were on the ground floor, but the womens were up or down a flight of stairs or more. And the womens toilets here are upstairs and well away from the main area. It was so empty upstairs, I almost thought I was in the wrong place, too. We kept getting strange looks from another patron which made us speed up finishing our drinks and leaving. Despite being Americans, we were not being loud or doing anything other than chatting having a drink, but it was really strange and made us a bit uncomfortable. So we downed the rest of our drinks and went back to our hotel. I did like the general feel of this place though and it would likely be a nice place for a meal.

Set back just from the main road into Salisbury, the hilltop is popular with tourists and locals…read morealike! Not only is it convenient in location with a large carpark but it also has a fantastic menu. The menu is tradtionally british with fry ups and mixed grills heading the menu up at a reasonable price. If you want to go on a Sunday you need to be keen as they do roast dinner for a set price and the place is heaving! The staff are lovely, really friendly and it feels like you have walked into your local even if you are visiting for the first time. The lay out is basic, and you pay as you order but it is clean and inviting although if you sit near a window it can be a little cold. The toilets are horrible! They remind me of the outdoor primary school toilets i was subjected to as a child the only difference is that they don't subject you to rough toilet paper!

I had the hilltop burger with onions and wow it was awesome cooked perfectly juicy and moist but cooked through and served with just enough sides to make it a filling and enjoyable meal. We dont get to Wiltshire much but we wouldnt hesitate to stop there again.
