We stopped in for one more drink before turning in for the night…read more This was suggested by our sever from dinner at the News Cafe. Ox Row Inn is located conveniently in the main central square area, so we also got to see cute bits of the town on our walk there. It was cozy and inviting inside, very "ye olde pub" feeling. The upstairs dining rooms were enchanting looking. We each got a drink and found a table without a reserved sign on it (they had pub trivia starting about an hour and a half after our arrival, but almost all tables were empty but reserved...I am still wrapping my head around the reservation thing at pubs!) and settled in to enjoy our drinks. A cider for my Fella, and a spritzy cocktail for me. Both lovely. We considered staying for trivia, but were just too tired. I started finding myself annoyed at most pubs and restaurants we went to where the mens toilets were on the ground floor, but the womens were up or down a flight of stairs or more. And the womens toilets here are upstairs and well away from the main area. It was so empty upstairs, I almost thought I was in the wrong place, too. We kept getting strange looks from another patron which made us speed up finishing our drinks and leaving. Despite being Americans, we were not being loud or doing anything other than chatting having a drink, but it was really strange and made us a bit uncomfortable. So we downed the rest of our drinks and went back to our hotel. I did like the general feel of this place though and it would likely be a nice place for a meal.

First, let me say there is an extra point here for advertising & external atmosphere that only a…read moreclassic low ceiling with bare wood beams (at least some are real) can afford. Came in early afternoon for a late lunch to a couple of pints and fish & chips (minus the mushy peas, but garden salad substituted) to four hungry Yanks. The chef was new, but the food was plentiful & well served. The fish was fresh, not frozen, fresh battered & fried in clean oil, as were the thick chips. (The rest of the group got the shoestring potatoes, but still good.) The bartender was occasionally occupied breaking in said new chef, but overall- it turned out well. For me, the bartender mistakenly overcharged me, then realized his mistake and backtracked his mistake- bringing me back a twenty pound note -saying "I'd not feel right if someone had done this to me, so I'm certainly not going to do it to you." So add a large helping of distinct honesty to the basic review. Definitely will be back someday, and relax for another couple of pints, watch the game on the large screen telly(s), and order up a fish & chips again. So, sure, recommended highly by a Yank or four. Cheers.

The pub bit isn't much different than most pubs. Loud music, sports on TV, regulars milling around. Oh, and they have a Star Wars pinball machine. Upstairs is a different world--for one thing, it's quiet. everything is pink and lacy and classical music is playing. It made for a lovely lunch. Prices are a bit high both for food and drinks, but the atmosphere and cool people make it worthwhile.

I have eaten pies, fish and chips and steak and chips. Each meal has been delicious. This visit, as I was not the driver, I could have a pint of beer. There were seven of us who ate and not only did we have dessert, we also had cappuccinos. Their after-lunch coffees are very tasty and round out a meal nicely. The road outside is a little narrow so drinking and driving is NOT recommended. This is a great place for a family meal or a business lunch.
