Awesome place for good times, good food and ice cold beers. Love their Guinness. Good pub grub and Irish faire. Great place to catch a game or try your brain at trivia. read more

This place is great. Glad they survived after a long hiatus.

$2 for tap water on wing night just because we ordered water before drinks! Tried to talk to the bartender about it, but he didn't care. $2 for each tap water!! read more

Ok, I'm bumping this up a star. Why? Dollar PBR drafts. Nuf Ced. That and I think that the BHS alumni crowd has moved on to Fibbers, leaving the Onion to be what I imagine is an Endicott hangout now. I'm completely fine with that. read more

Very nice staff, comfortable atmosphere, cheap beer (price wise)... Their nacho's and fried pickles are AMAZING. I am a fan. Enough said! read more

Pickled Onion is a happenin' place in town. Thursday nights typically being open mic night and Friday-Saturday nights you are treated to local bands. With in the last year the Onion switched ownership. The food is still great pub food for average pub food prices. Beers are still reasonably priced. The staff caters to the regulars but is still friendly for the most part . Overall a great place to socialize and drink. Good place to eat before late night hours. I have made deductions based on the fact the place becomes way too overcrowded and the bands are too loud for you to have a conversation with the people you came out with. If they turn it down a notch and control the crowds, this place could be the perfect hang out. Minimum $20 limit on your credit or debit cards may pose a problem for some as well. read more

This place is right down the street from the Commuter Rail train stop in Beverly. I went in while waiting for a ride. It has the decor of an Irish pub but I never got the "feel" of it having anything authentically Irish. "Summer Ale" draft was $4. I didn't eat. read more

So, I try to think really hard when I give a 5-star review, "Is there anything I would change about this place?" In the case of the Pickled Onion, there isn't. The Pickled Onion is great at what it does: basic, American fare, served quickly. We usually go on weekend afternoons for lunch and it's pretty quiet then. The Pickled Onion can't be missed on Rantoul St. thanks to its giant Gaelic neon sign. Once you get in, the decor is mostly flat-screens with sports playing and the bar. We like to sit at the high tables near the bar, although there is also a dining area. We've eaten at the Pickled Onion three times, and each time I have marveled at the simple, fresh quality of the food from such a townie-looking restaurant. O'Brien's in Salem looks similar but their food is nowhere near as good. The fish and chips have a crispy batter that tastes fresh, not frozen, and the entrees come with salad that has a fair portion of mixed greens (no iceberg in sight!) and vegetables. On top of which, the prices are very reasonable ($11 for fish and chips, $6-8 for toasties). read more

I guess you could call The Onion a townie hangout. Its where all the locals go when they're back visiting from college. They just made a little more space over by where the bands play by moving one of the bars. Overall theres usually good music and they always have a sports game on. Not a bad place to go for Sox and Pats games. Beer selection is OK. Sometimes they carry my drink and sometimes they don't but they've always got something else to help get the job done. read more

I'm really only reviewing this to say that despite what the info box claims, it is NOT WHEELCHAIR ACCESSIBLE. Well, it's accessible if you don't need a bathroom, but if you're going to a bar, you need a bathroom. The bathroom is too small to turn a chair in and it lacked grab bars. I couldn't shut the door with my chair inside the bathroom unless maybe I backed all the way down a narrow corridor and backed into the room, which, you might imagine, I did not try. Even if that did work, there was still the no grab bars issue, so there'd be no way of getting from chair to toilet and back. So, I was really miffed to head to a place claiming to be accessible, only to find out it wasn't actually, and only once I had to pee. Poor form. read more

Wednesday $2 burgers. yum. was inebriated for the most of the visit, but I remember the burger was nice. Beers were standard price. My female server was not the most welcoming, the male server was nicer. karaoke was going on behind me. I tried not to pay attention. hahah. asked the server to change the TV to the basketball game and they did! read more

This is a perfect place to watch New England sports games because they have a few nice TVs, and for big games they use a huge HD projector for the game, it's real sick. The service is kinda awful but what can you expect, it's a typical college dive bar. Beers are cheap, food is decent, but it too is cheap. The taps are so fucked, that it kinda makes the $1 PBR's taste like vanilla Coors Light. I shit you not. And yes, while the simple idea of that is absolutely repulsive - it's not that bad. The straight-outta-the-SAW-movies closet they call their 'bathroom' is pretty gnarly (in a bad way) too. REGARDLESS! Moral of the story here is: you're already in here so 'what the fuck' right? read more

Okay this place was good before the staff started to not care about their own customers personal safety. Before i went here this place was alright, but this incident changed my opinion of the place. First of all, my boyfriend and his friend were here last night, and they were having a good time until they went to leave. He accidently bumps into someone im not sure how it started but whatever he did to piss these kids off was harmless, and they were intoxicated. And they jumped him and his friend. OF course the bouncers did jack shit about it and sat back and watched the whole thing. you think if this place cared about the saftey of their customers they would handle this better by calling the police and or holding back the other kid and intervening. But no they sat back as if at a movie with a box of fucking popcorn and did NOTHING. How can you keep going to this bar when the staff doesn't give a shit about their own customers? this fight could have easily escalded and i have a feeling the bouncers and staff will do nothing to stop fights like these happening. people get drunk and act foolish so TAKE SOME RESPONSIBILITY. as a result of thism, my boyfriend has a big fat lip and a black eye. Thank you Pickled onion for great customer service. And for doing jack shit to stop any of these physical altercations outside or inside this place. Please stop going here unless you want to get a black eye and a fat lip and possibly worse injuries. THANK YOU FOR NOTHING read more

Food is iffy but it really doesn't matter. You want to go to this place to drink cheap beers. They now have 75 cent PBRs which is awesome. Even if you aren't a fan of PBRs you will learn to like em. The bartenders are great and very attentive, which makes up for a lot of shortcomings. The new-ish owner(s) let the upkeep of the bar go to crap, but again your purpose there is to catch a solid band once in a while, see some good looking ladies, and drink some cheap beer. I think they soak the floor in bleach, which is why the once well maintained barroom floors now look like the floors at the Pine Street Inn (homeless shelter in Boston). The bathroom is atrocious. You can count on two day old puke being stuck to the toilet seat. You don't want to sit anyway, because in the mens room there is no lock or even a handle on the crapper door. You can only wash your hands if someone isn't dropping a deuce or occupying the crapper because its secluded from the urinal. I think the walls in the bathroom are made of aspestus and sand. Again, all of this does not take away from why you are there. read more

I am a day drinker who likes to read the newspaper, chat with other locals and drink a good beer. This is a great place to do exactly that. So many ice cold beer choices that are constantly changing to fit with the season and a very comfortable daytime crew of regulars. As far as food goes-- I'm a clam chowder snob, and this is truly the best you can get around here. No need to add any salt, pepper, hot sauce, etc. It's just delicious. The hot roast beef sandwich, beef stew, honey buffalo wings or fingers, and anything involving their steak tips are also great choices. I used to come here often at night but have cut down on nighttime outtings, although it was always fun. There's a schedule for entertainment every night, and karaoke here is always entertaining, without too many people being a) to obnoxious or b) thinking they're on American Idol. It's a bunch of people having fun. The bar is also very clean, despite having an old building with creaky floors. It's literally spotless, especially compared to when I used to go here (shh, underage.. I'm sorry Pickled Onion, I think it was different ownership! My 21+ friends made me do it!) The only cons that I have is that the staff turnover has been high, and therefore newbies can be unfamiliar with the bar setup, POS system, or have not been in service and therefore may not be the best at multi tasking. There's always an adequate staff on board so this shouldn't be too detrimental. The bartenders that have been there a while are fantastic. Also (and this has nothing to do with the bar), local college kids can come in in swarms on any given night, and for some people this can be a hectic environment if it's not your style. I only put it under cons because it's not my style-- this could be a pro for anyone that wants that! Lastly, and I've called them for this frantically in the past: The credit card machine does a 'pre-authorization' for 20 dollars to run a tab. It will not be charged to your card, as I've worried many times, especially in my broke days. And a couple days later that 20 bucks would be off my statement. It's no major need for worry, and I'm sure the staff would be happy to fix it for you if something were to go wrong. read more

I was very excited to go here tonight with a few of my friends. Yes they did a very good job keeping everyone separated and happy due to covid. My problem is with one specific issue was with a bartender. She swore at my friend for walking to my table. He had his mask on and was simply Coming over to sit down. We had 4 people at the table So there was room for him. We decided to leave and skip karaoke because it killed our mood! The swearing was very unprofessional. If I spoke like that to customers my manager would've fired me. read more

Went here for wing night on Tuesday. Took forever for the waitresss to take our order. Waited an hour for our food. She cleared our table settings without asking how the food we never got was. When we asked, it was pretty clear that she either forgot our order or the kitchen never made it. She came back and said that they "couldn't find any wings" so they were making us tenders (which they said that didn't have any when we got there). We ended up getting half tenders and half wings which was really strange. The chicken(if it was really chicken) was horrendous and didn't even taste like chicken. She charged us for all wings(which was more expensive than tenders) and never offered to comp anything even though it took an hour and a half to get our awful food. Safe to say we will never be returning to this place. Hope you finally found some wings! read more

Although they have long had the worst bathroom in Beverly, for some time now it features a toilet without a seat.

This place would be the best spot in Beverly if they didn't have the weakest drinks of all time. I'm here all the time but not for their drinks but for their chicken fingers. Food is incredible but holy crap their drinks are the weakest drinks I've ever had. Please just adapt to stronger drinks and you'd be the best bar in Beverly. Not the second to the anchor read more

The only reason that this is not a 1 star is due to the fact I know one of the bartenders. This bar sucks in a way that is almost indescribable. The service.. Nope no service...The place is large with a small bar wedged in between the wall and the bathroom. They have random tables littering what can only be described as dance floor causing a maze of sorts to the bathrooms. The crowd is usually about a million trashy Beverly girls and boys all under 23 having some kind of reunion. The air in this place is so thick filled with breath and sweat that the last time I was there the walls were actually dripping!!! Can you say GROSS!! The one tiny bathroom always has a 15 min wait because the girls can't seem to go in in groups of less than 3 at a time! I'm all for a noisy crowded bar if they still can effectively serve the patrons but this place can NOT! God forbid there was ever a fire in this place you would fry like a chicken in Georgia! I HATE this bar!! read more

Im Friday night regular for the past 10 years and the quality of service has down sided en enormously! It saddens me because we enjoy the irish music but the service the past months is just horrid. The staff turn over his erratic It seems when the place is busy the regulars are left on the way side. I cant get a meal or a drink right the prices are so expensive . The food. is sub par. time to fine a new pub to hang read more

This is my favorite local bar. The bar tenders are extremely nice and after a few visits will remember your face, your name and your drink. A pint of Sam Adams is $3.75 and other drinks are similarly cheap. The music is hit or miss and the crowds can be somewhat overwhelming on a friday or saturday night. I like this place the best on weeknights when you can quietly chat with regulars and the bartenders. It feels cozy, homy and just plain comfortable. Oh, and on Sundays they pull down a huge screen for Pats games. Just a great place. read more

I feel the need to quote fellow Yelper Joe M. as he hit the nail on the head: "If you're over 23 years old don't bother. Definitely a beginners bar. Lots of backwards baseball hats and giggling drunk girls. Chuck E. Cheeses for people who just turned 21." Yeah. That being said, the PO can be an ok hang in the daytime/early eve. Emphasis on the "ok": food, service, price, etc... It's a typical Boston area neo-irish pub but can be a cozy daytime snug to work off a hangover with a Guiness on occasion. The most galling thing about The pickled Onion though, is what it *was*: f-ing Freddie's Cocktails! Now that was a time machine if there ever was one. The remnants can still be glimpsed in the exterior sign which, back in the day, was a vegas-esque beauty towering over Rantoul St. You and Don Draper would have spent many a 4 martini lunch talking business over the Sinatra soundtrack in Freddie's. Looking damn good in your suits too. Yeah. read more

I have been to the Onion many times over the past several years and everytime I leave I promise myself that I will never come back. The place is loud, it gets really crowded, and if there is a band playing forget it. My dart team plays there from time to time and it is poorly set up and we end up having to take turns watching becuase of all the people and the location of the board. read more

Good during the day, but at night forget about it. The food is very good and the prices are fair but at night it gets way too loud and crowded. My advice, turn down the volume on the speakers, I like to be able to talk with the people that I attend with, it is so loud you cannot hear someone talk, you have to yell. read more

I go here all the time. A solid college bar with good specials throughout the week. The atmosphere is pretty laid back during the day and early night. The beer is always super cold and not that expensive. My only advice is don't order mixed drinks here. They don't know how to mix a drink with enough alcohol to save their lives. That being said the onion is a fun place to grab some beer and food. I'm a Fan read more

The food is good. Quite tasty, and ok priced. The service is horrible. I have been here a few times; yes on trivia night and wings night. I understand the place is packed, but if they could at least assign tables to certain wait-staff so you'd know which one to flag down, that would help. And if they're expecting such a crowd, they should plan to have more wait-staff available. Last night was the worst. My husband waited over half an hour for his second beer, and I never got the water I ordered. We were with a group of people, and two of them ended up being our go-betweens- they went to the bar for us, to clear plates or order more drinks. It was ridiculous. There are many better pubs in the North Shore area- don't waste your time going here. read more

The Pickled Onion is really second to none as far as value. They have really improved their whole vibe with the addition of several new televisions that makes this a great spot to watch a game. They have good food and great prices, not to mention a great beer selection. I would highly recommend. read more

We had about a 75 tab going earlier yoday. We had about another 3-5 folks joining us. We ordered 3 drinks from the bar. They were not drinkable. We asked to switch them for a low end beer. The bar tender stated he would have to charge us for both drinks. As nothing but a sip was out of the drink I asked the bar tender to reconsider his position as this would likely be a 500+ tab at the end of the night. He declined. Ok , we paid for the undrinkable b beverages and spent $$ at another location. Clearly the owner has forgotten what Irish pubs are supposed to be. The fish and chips were not fresh fish and certainly not cod or haddock. Perhaps Tilapia? Nasty taste of old frozen product. How sad...I will never go back to the pickled onion and suggest everyone else who reads this do the same! #Worstbarinbeverly read more

Friends and relatives: Let me tell you something. The "PO" is everything. It is exactly all things: those which you fully want, and also items of which you have little to no desire. Among the items meriting want: it is merely a single dollar for a PBR. This is outstanding! I have spent many equivalent dollars on a lesser quantity of equal or lesser quality beers at other places/establishments. This is as if you were to pay less money for more things that you wish to have. Picture that in your mind's eye: That is the Pickled Onion! Similarly cheap are large quantities of buffalo wings, nachos, and camaraderie. These are all available for low amounts of money on different nights. Be sure to find out the specials of days to maximize your dollar and to maximize your desire to enjoy sports with equally ravenous fans of those sports. I recommend Tuesday as a day for cheap wings, and also will make a recommendation for Monday as a day for Trivia Sports: Dan is a once-in-a-weeknight trivia DJ. Take him or leave him! Perhaps to bring this full circle I should mention those things which may not be desired for those that are inclined to not desire things: the youngness and oldness dichotomy is abominable. On a given Sunday afternoon, the elderly and their progeny tend to be in the "PO" and listen to Irish songs and dance tunes, whereas a given Friday at a later hour than the Sunday example would be highly populous, but with younger folks such as college attendees and the unemployed but carefree. These young folks dance, too, but more loudly and lewdly. Here's the point: you might not be with people you like if you go here at the wrong time, but it will probably still not cost a lot, and the things you consume will taste good because you've consumed copious PBR. read more

I was in here a few weeks ago with some friends . I had a hard time getting my ID out of my wallet and in the process dislodged some large important checks for my business. ALL THREE CHECKS WERE RETURNED. The bouncer found one and looked for the rest and then remembered me somehow. Also a patron at the bar found one. Neither would accept a tip or a drink on me. So impressed. Great people, great place, fun atmosphere. read more

Service was slow, only one person working and not very busy. Food is alright but nothing special. My friend ordered her food and it came out completely wrong and bartender refused to fix it unless they were charged for both. The bartender said that under aged people had to leave by 10 when their kitchen closes, which is understandable, but 15 min later it was only 915 and he kicked our under aged friend out because they made the decision to close early. Another one of my friends went outside to smoke and is positive he saw a drug deal go down involving the bartender, which is believable because the bartender was acting like he was on some type of drug...most likely cocaine or adderall, plus the individual that the bartender meet outside never came into the establishment. I will never return here and would not recommend this place to anyone. read more

i like it in here enough but i've done a lot of standing around as opposed to finding a seat and being comfortable, and i've been told (by beverly high school alumni) that it's a beverly high school class reunion in here every weekend. they have a good cheap beer selection (miller high life!) and i'm pretty sure they have good regular-priced beer, too, but i forget. good for live band-watching, but don't expect to have a meaningful conversation. one time i was in here and there were heineken light girls walking around, passing out samples and keychains. i swear to god one of the girls had a fake butt. like, padded underwear. read more

The Pickled Onion is a fun, fairly low key place to hang out on a weekend night and see a band. $1 PBR's for those who like that sort of thing :) And a few good beers (Long Trail, Sierra Nevada, Newcastle Winter IPA, Harpoon Winter Warmer, Loose Cannon) on tap for real beer drinkers. The place fills up with college students after 10 or so, so I felt old in my early 30's, but had fun seeing the band play nonetheless. read more
