I don't even know where to start with The Pencil Test in Renton, but I truly feel like there should be more stores like this for women. It's honestly kind of crazy that in my 33 years of life, I went so long without actually having a bra that fits me properly. The women who work here are incredibly knowledgeable. Both times I've gone in, I was helped by, I believe, Hailey, and she made me feel so welcomed and comfortable right away. What amazed me the most is how quickly she could figure out my correct bra size. She'll take a look at your back, see you in the bra you came in wearing, and then bring you an option she thinks will work. The first time she did that, I was shocked. How would she act know my size without even using a measuring tape? It was like magic. She came back with two bras to try on, and my mind was blown after the first bra she brought fit me like it was made for me!!! I can't explain the feeling you have once you wear a bra that actually fits you. Like you thought you were a bra that fit you until that moment. You're like, "Whoa! This is what it feels like. " It's crazy and out of this world to explain. It's honestly impressive how experienced and skilled they are. They also do such a great job making you feel confident and supported throughout the whole process. It never feels awkward or uncomfortable, which I really appreciated. Another thing I didn't realize before going is that they sell more than just bras. They also have underwear and a really great selection of bathing suits in different styles and colors for all kinds of preferences and body types. I highly recommend making an appointment if you can, because it can get busy, and you might have to wait a bit otherwise. That said, even without an appointment, the wait sometimes isn't very long. I've told my mom and several friends about this place, and every single one of them has come back telling me how impressed they were with the customer service and the overall experience. Yes, the bras can be a little more expensive than what you might find at a typical retail store, but the quality and materials are excellent, and they last a long time. Absolutely wonderful experience. I've struggled my whole life finding a place that can accurately measure me and give me recommendations. You get a personal fitter and they give you tons of recommendations based on what you're looking for. They also don't sugar coat it and give you the hard truth- like needing to embrace underwire . Highly recommend this store to anyone looking for a personalized fitting with a large array of styles and sizes. I had not been professionally fitted in years. Once my size was determined I shared what types of bras I was looking for. It was very convenient to have the sales rep bring me a bunch, swap them out, etc. I was super comfortable with her (Haley) and she was spot on with her suggestions. I purchased a couple styles I might not have normally considered but they sure made the "girls" look better! These are not inexpensive, but they are high quality. I hadn't been fitted for a bra in... longer than I want to think about but when I finally went for it, it was a surprisingly great experience. My fitter was Holly and she was very knowledgeable and kind. She fitted me into a perfectly fitting bra 3 letters above what I'd been wearing! Yikes. But seriously, game changer. I went to The Pencil Test for a fitting because I wanted to get some sports bras and was looking to try on binders/minimizers for a larger chest. I cannot express just how awesome and helpful and non judgmental the boutique owner here was. She didn't try to upsell at all (she asked me what size I was wearing in bras and affirmed just by visually looking that I'd previously been correctly fitted and didn't need a bunch of regular bras). She showed me how to correctly put things on, how to properly re-arrange boobs and walked me through my options for binders. Then, when there was some spare time (and I was the final appointment of the day), she let my friend with me who had never been properly sized get fitted (and she was in a significantly incorrect size) and didn't rush us at all despite the time. We both bought a few things and will definitely be back when we need more. This was hands down the best process I've had bra shopping and I have had some pretty decent ones/been fitted correctly in the past. I would highly recommend making an appointment here. Appointments are required, but it's super easy self-service on their website. Very possibly the easiest bra fitting ever! Very quick to not only mostly accurately guess my size, but to adjust accordingly. The best part? I told them what styles I like and magically the bras came to me! TONS of options here! If you're a busty lady, you know how hard it can be to find cute bras. Fear not, this place has our backs! Many, many styles to choose from. I had already been needing a major bra collection update when I was diagnosed with breast cancer this past summer. I had a lumpectomy and finished active treatment. The thought of going to a big department store to get measured, as I've done in the past, was unbearable. It all felt so emotional and fraught! I had heard great things about The Pencil Test and easily booked an appointment. The person who helped me (ugh I forgot your name, I am so sorry) was incredibly knowledgeable and knew my size pretty much by sight. She's a bra genius! I am plus sized so was worried the only options would be ugly and matronly, but there were so many cute ones! And while they weren't cheap, they were high quality. I had been dreading the appointment but it ended up being such a positive experience. Also, if you're schlepping from far away like me, make an afternoon of it! I cannot recommend this place strongly enough! End to end, I had a great experience. The website used for booking/canceling/rescheduling was super intuitive and easy to navigate and confirmations came directly to my email; the text and email reminders leading up to my appointment date were also appreciated. The store itself is in a lovely downtown area with plenty of (FREE!) parking nearby. The consultant I worked with was both personable and knowledgeable. She confirmed that I was pretty close to the correct size already and quickly produced a few samples to confirm the right size to look for. From there, she asked what kind of bras I might like and brought me a little bit of everything to try on. Throughout the fitting she was patient and attentive but did not make me feel rushed or crowded. She gave me helpful feedback and clearly had extensive knowledge of the store's inventory and the designers they stock. Then there is the selection! Normally, when you're above a certain size, your only choice is between two very matronly bras in black, white, or nude. The Pencil Test had some of those, of course, but there were SO many options -- lined/unlined, padded, sexy, sporty ... and everything in between! Never in my life have I had a bra fitting where they sized me accurately *by sight*. The staff were respectful, patient, attentive, and I especially appreciate the disability accommodations - masking upon request, and allowing my partner in the fitting room to assist me. The salesperson's knowledge of their products was extensive, and they brought me an assortment of full price and sale items (not just the most expensive items in the store like some other stores have a habit of doing). Sizing is shockingly inclusive, too - their band sizes start at 28 inches, and they also carry an assortment of good quality binders. I will definitely be back! read more

tl;dr NEVER AGAIN. RUDE. My friend is a local business owner and is wary of retaliation if she leaves a bad review, so I'm doing it for her: Wanting to support a local small business, and hopefully have something in my size, I went to The Pencil Test, which is supposed to be plus size. They have a sign on their door saying they are appointment only today. I wave at the person who is working because the door is locked, and she reluctantly comes to the door. I ask if they have appointments and explain I didn't know I need one. She says they usually don't require one, but there is only one fitter today. I ask if they might have an opening. Lady rolls her eyes and goes to shut the door on me, saying she will be back. I ask if I can come in, and she replies, "Hhhh, I guess." About 2 min later, she comes back and says there are no appointments. They don't want me to just look around by myself. I ask if they have appointments tomorrow, and she says, "You don't need an appointment tomorrow." Then the fitter pipes up, "You'll have to wait at least 2 hours because it's our busiest day and we serve appointments first." At no point do they offer to make me an appointment. I finally ask if they have appointments and they roll their eyes (there are 3 people working btw, one doing alterations, the fitter, and the one who answered the door), and are like, "We are full. We get booked a week in advance. It's tank season so everyone needs strapless bras right now...." At this point I just walk out mid sentence. I go to a nearby boutique that I love and ask if they have strapless bras. She is really sorry and says, "No, have you been to The Pencil Test?" I burst into tears and tell her what happened. **She said she has had that happen to her there too** and doesn't feel welcome. She said she is going to email the owner. She suggests Nordstrom, so, We go to Nordstrom and the sales associate is super bubbly and nice. I say I understand she might not have my size in stock and I might have to order it online. She says, "If you need something we don't have today, The Pencil Test usually does." After being pregnant or breastfeeding for the past five years I was in desperate need of some bras that fit. Not only did they say it was okay to bring my toddler with me, the woman doing my fitting, Jamie, offered to walk her up and down the hallway outside the fitting room while I tried on bras. Jamie listened to what I was looking for, brought me options and then gave me space to try things on while staying nearby for any questions or adjustments. I feel really terrible that I can remember the name of the woman who was helping me but she was amazing and took one look at me and knew exactly where to start sizing wise. As a male who needs to wear a bra, especially when exercising at the gym, it is always a challenge to find the right bra. I need support from a bra that controls bouncing, yet need it to be comfortable. By chance I discovered the Pencil Test and then went online to their website. It was a pleasant surprise to read that they were LGBT-friendly. I called to schedule a fitting and spoke to Hallie, who was able to get me in that same afternoon. When I arrived I was greeted warmly and felt very comfortable. I felt confident that with their large inventory I would find the right bra. In the fitting room Hallie sized me and asked what kind of bra I was looking for. I told her that I needed a sports bra but also one that was comfortable enough to wear every day. She agreed when I told her that I prefer wearing a bra with underwire, as I've found over the years that they can actually be quite comfy. I was able to try on several brands and styles, with Hallie properly adjusting each. I was able to select a Panache Ultra Perform in a 40 D. I had never worn a Panache bra before and was very impressed. I like that the straps are padded and don't slip off. Also, I always appreciate having a bra with a three-hook clasp closure in the back because they allow easier putting it on and taking it off. The band underneath the cups helps keep my breasts supported and in place. Even though this bra is non-padded, the material keeps my large nipples from being visible to the world. Hallie gave her thumbs up approving my selection. I definitely will return to the Pencil Test for my next bra and will also recommend this store to my friends. read more

Last time I was fit for a bra at Nordstroms they put me in a 36GG and then 34HH. I'm 5'6" and 150 pounds. Well, today they put me in sizes 32N and 30JJ. Excellent fittings with a great selection.You'll be paying upwards of $60-$70+ but these are GREAT BRAS that will lift you up and keep you looking amazing for years. I asked to be fitted and the saleswoman knew my size by just looking at me. They had a great selection and a few options even in my unusual size. This boutique is really great. They fit from 28D-44K. I saw the A-frame outside one day and knew I had to introduce this place to my friends. The store was quite spacious and had many varieties. Holly led 3 of us back and did a fitting. She had us try on unlined, lined, and even bralettes. I was a 36D-DD and Holly was nice enough to explain that the bras I needed were not the general structure sold at Victoria's Secret. My bra shaping is more spaced out and is similar to that of Central Europe and Asia fittings. She gave me a card with brands that would best fit me (department store). The variety of prices that we tried on in store ranged from $36-$70. For the level of customer service, I would spend my money here anytime over other places in the mall.
