The park was formerly known as Macombs Park since it is on the corner of Macombs and 176th but last year they re-named it to Galileo after they expanded and remodeled a bit more. Can't wait til the summer when they turn the sprinklers on through the statues and clean it up much better. A great park for kids/ families.

Cause see, it once was a reservoir...so it's a big, drained-dry-reservoir-turned-park. It's like this double decker park...kind of. There's a running track at the sunken to the bottom of the reservoir, with a soccer field in its middle. Paved, tree-shaded walks surround the lower-level oval and lead you to playgrounds, basketball, tennis, and bocce courts and more. Walk up the stairs, or run up a grassy hill bowl, there's the upper oval. After a good snow, we'd sled down them in our red plastic saucers, though there might be the danger of snow-hidden dog sh*t. The top level strolls round, overlooking the park trough the trees, as neighborhood street scenes outline the rim.

The park stretches for almost 3 miles from Main St to Frances Lewis Blvd with its widest part between its namesake Kissena Blvd and 164th St to its narrowest part at Utopia Pkwy. Most of the park is accessible, but there are some wild parts with dense foliage, fallen trees and marshland, better suited for wildlife. The park also encompasses the Kissena Park Golf Course, which is fenced off. If you want to hike the entire length of the park, you can hike along the northern perimeter of the golf course. The golf course is public with greens fees around $30. You'll see golfers there in all types of weather except when it's snow covered. The course entrance is on Booth Memorial, east of 164th St. There are many playgrounds sprinkled along the whole stretch with jungle gyms, monkey bars & slides, along with tennis, basketball & handball courts and softball, baseball & cricket fields. You can generally play sports in the fields if nobody is there, but if you're an organized team, it's best to get a scheduled permit from NYC Parks & Recreation. Also hidden inside the park are many memorials along paved and unpaved walking trails and a surprise velodrome and a lake with plenty of waterfowl.

St. Nicholas Park was built on a rugged mass of rock of steep, high elevation hills, rugged uneven terrain and irregular topography of northern Manhattan which has hills and steep inclines. Alexander Hamilton's 1802 estate, Hamilton Grange, was relocated to the St. Nicholas Park's northern end.
