A small park with plenty of tall leafy trees, benches, and a central fountain, directly next to…read more(south of) NYC's City Hall building. While it's currently fairly close to the bottom tip of Manhattan, the park in colonial times was considered the northernmost edge of the city. Being thus, it started off functioning as locations for services relegated to the city periphery--livestock pastures 1653-1699, an almshouse 1736-1797, a debtors prison and execution site when the British controlled the area during the Revolutionary War 1756-1783. Once the park became adjacent to the current city hall built in 1803, it then hosted the city's first art museum 1818, and the southern tip of the park was sold to the US government to convert into a post office 1867, then torn down and converted back to park grounds in 1939. Constructed in 1842, the original fountain in the park was named Croton Fountain after the then new Croton aqueduct from which water was pumped to run it. In 1871 it was replaced by the current smaller version, designed by Jacob Wray Mould, who also co-designed Central Park's Bethesda Fountain. There are a number of permanent sculptures of historic figures in the park as well as temporary sculpture installations. Overall the park is quite clean and safe, probably due to its proximity to the nearby city offices and police presence. Due to its proximity to the city building where marriages are performed, you'll often catch couples taking marriage photos here in the park--have come upon these special moments a couple times as I've randomly walked through. The park, which stretches from the lighthouse south to Coler Hospital, was designed by landscape architect Nicholas Quennell in 1977. The park was not always in good shape. There is a paved path so you can run, walk or bike ride without the fear of dealing with traffic. When traveling West to East, there's a decline and we always feel the incline when traveling back from a 3-4 mile run. This is a nice start to a long run because it leads eastward to the northbound trail that runs along the I-95, the trails that lead to City Island, Pelham Bay Park and Orchard Beach and the Northbound trail that heads along Shore Road to New Rochelle. There are a number of paths to take that will give you elevation, varying terrain and interesting views. Making the transition from the parkway to the biking/running trails can be a bit dangerous when traversing the roads. Drivers tend to speed down and don't really yield to pedestrians; they are pretty aggressive in this area. You only have about three before you have a continuous path but you must stay vigilant and be aware of your surroundings.

Over the years, the Park has gotten an impressive updo with a bike and running path- which was monumental for the area. It's an all-round park...may not be Central Park... but it does just fine here. As a rule of thumb, Soundview Park is accessible by getting off the very last exit of the Bronx River Pkwy. Entrances are pretty much endless: Lafayette, Colgate, Morrison Avenues and many others. However, you can also hit up Soundview Park from another angle if you're in the Clason Point area- another nearby section close to Soundview. You got your designated area for picnics, general grass area for sports including a large Baseball Field. A few Handball courts closer to the Metcalf Ave entrance, further in, a Tennis court and a Children's park. Soundview Park isn't elevated, but you could still get a quick peak of NYC's tippy top skyline on a real clear day. Even further, a Bike and Trail Path- feet away from the Bronx River. I'd run a few laps at 5am- alone when I used to live here and people would advise me to be "careful"- "especially in Soundview". But even running at the crack of dawn by myself- was all good. And besides, living in The Bronx as a kid, kind of made you develop a thick skin. Believe it or not, I'm actually more uptight running a few laps at a park close to home in White Plains- and fearful of coming across a coyote, raccoon or a freaking skunk- than exercising in my old stomping grounds! Soundview Park means a lot to the folks in this area plus those who come to visit. People here, just get a real dose to enjoy Nature.

It's like being in the club damn near. It's cooked. The Eastside highway, in contrast, is so slept on. It doesn't take itself too serious. Yeah it doesn't have boujee ass playgrounds or man made beaches every couple blocks, but it's beautiful in its own right. It just shows up, puts the work in, and clocks out. It doesn't need the glitz and glamor like your beloved Westside Highway. It doesn't need the accolades. It just lets its game do the talking. The track is also flying under the radar. I've lived in the East Village for a year and a half and didn't even know it existed. We held our own EV Olympics here over the weekend and I couldn't have been more shocked about how nice it is. It's a polyurethane track that is comprised of multiple layers for optimal performance. On Saturday, I was getting DESTROYED in the 100M dash by my 2 most athletic friends. That's how you get better though. I'm coming back for gold in 2028. Also, sprinting 100M a few times when you haven't sprinted in a minute really shocks the body, let me tell you. I'm still feeling it. On Sunday, I came back and just walked around the track for an hour, called my Mom, Dad, Brother, and girlfriend. While yapping away and logging steps, I was able to enjoy the east river view, open air, and the men's soccer league game that was going on in the middle. I can breathe out here. EASTSIDE STAND UP! I learned that this waterfront space was once the site of a radio tower. Because it was early morning, the park was quiet and empty. A few people were walking their dogs on the pier, which overlooks the Manhattan skyline. What caught my eye even more than the city waking up, however, was the large mural against a red brick wall. It shows a woman lying down, plucking dandelion petals. It was whimsical, especially once I noticed the frog beside her. I appreciated discovering this small pocket of the city and enjoyed the moment of peace before my day kicked into high gear.
