This was our second visit to Pastry Garden. Located in a strip mall with plenty of parking, it's a convenient stop while running errands or shopping in the area. Our first experience, a little over a year ago, was fantastic. The staff was friendly and helpful, the prices were reasonable, and the pastries were delicious. Unfortunately, this visit didn't live up to those memories. We stopped in shortly after opening to pick up some desserts for the three-hour drive home. Despite being one of the only customers there, we were not acknowledged for over five minutes and eventually had to ask if we could place an order. It wasn't the most welcoming start to our visit. We ordered two large cupcakes and two regular cupcakes and were surprised by the prices. The large cupcakes, which were only slightly bigger than the regular ones, were $6.00 each. The regular cupcakes were $3.25 each and were about the size of the mini cupcakes you might find at a grocery store bakery. We chose simple flavors--chocolate with chocolate frosting and vanilla with chocolate frosting--so there wasn't anything particularly unique or specialty-inspired to justify the higher cost. Unfortunately, the cupcakes themselves were disappointing. The cake was dry, and the frosting was very stiff, which made them less enjoyable than we had hoped. Given the price point, we expected a much fresher and more flavorful product. It's always disappointing when a place you once loved doesn't deliver the same experience on a return visit. While we have fond memories of our first stop at Pastry Garden, this visit left us underwhelmed, and sadly, it's not a place we'll be rushing back to. read more

I really had high hopes. But, they did not meet my expectations I had. The smaller cupcakes were very dry. They all lacked flavor. It was as if they were sitting out for a while. I never ate them in full. I noticed they make tiered cakes. I'm wondering if that's where things rock for them. Pricing was on point with so many other locations. They are $3 for the standard size and I think $5 for the larger ones. The smaller ones are worth $2-$2.50, not $3. My order was actually wrong. I stated I wanted a vanilla cupcake with vanilla icing, a chocolate cupcake with vanilla icing, and a red velvet. I never got the chocolate cupcake, it was a vanilla cupcake with chocolate icing. While the one employee was getting my cupcakes packaged up there was another employee standing behind the cookie display. I asked if she was able to pack up some cookies for me. She said, "nah, she will get it." Then walked behind/near the girl packing my cupcakes. So I gave up and never got cookies. When planning an event, weddings,birthday parties etc. you must make an appointment for said large events for your cake tasting. With my wife and 2 other siblings we selected white cake with either strawberry preserves filling with fresh strawberry, blueberry mousse which had whole blueberries, lemon mousse and buttercream. They give you a cup with 2 of your selections in each stacked on top of one another.Mary who was the manager helped us with any questions and concerns, she was very friendly. We decided we would prefer the strawberry filling. The sheet cake was about $250 and a layer cake for about 100 people started at around $700. The store is a magical spot for all sorts of pastries. Also samples are made available on the counter. My wife sampled a carrot cake and said it was delicious. I tried an apple Pastry and it was amazing. Those sample cakes we tried were also excellent. A 100% beautiful, 100% vegan, 100% delicious wedding cake can be your reality, too. I went in for my consultation 2 months prior to my wedding. I was happy to see some vegan offerings right there in the display case. My god, everyone is so nice here, from the people working the counter to Stephanie, the owner, with whom I met for about a half hour. It was such an enjoyable conversation and I loved hearing about how her and her husband's business has grown since it opened 35 years ago. She told me that her granddaughter is vegan, so I knew I was in caring hands with my cake! I tried several options, vanilla and chocolate cakes with a variety of fruit fillings. All were incredibly moist and the perfect level of sweetness. I even liked the icing, despite being known to scrape off icing. I went with a black forest cake (there are two cherry options, sour and sweet... I was undecided but Stephanie said the sweet would be the more popular choice so I went with that). Icing color: I wanted a dark purple icing. Stephanie experimented on tge spot with the color and got the perfect shade that could be attained without affecting the flavor of the icing. Our florist added flowers and if you look at my photo, you'll see the perfect wedding cake (IMO). I couldn't stop eating it for days! As we speak, I am thinking about the box in my freezer containing the "good luck" cake that I am not supposed to to touch for another six months. It's extremely hard to resist especially during these rough times. I can't make any promises that this cake won't be touched until October. The first cake was a sculpted dragon Rice Krispy topper on top of a 20-person sheet cake that looked like an old, mystical book. Every detail, from the individually sculpted scales on the dragon to the rivets on the spine of the book, were immaculate! The cake was a white cake with a chocolate fudge layer that was delicious. I would give six stars if I could! The Pastry Garden in Poughkeepsie made the most beautiful three tier cake for my Sweet Sixteen birthday party. The service was wonderful when we first met with the owner and she was incredibly generous with her time making sure my voice got heard in what I was looking for and in relation to my Beauty and the Beast Disney theme. As soon as I got there, I knew I was in the right place. They have a nice display and a team ready to help with any questions, and I will definitely be coming here again for my future birthdays. The owner and the other staff made me feel better about any worries I had, and worked great with my venue! I had chosen a picture off of Pinterest and was looking for a few changes to it with my name written in the middle, and the skillful team at Pastry Garden ended up making this cake look even better than I could have ever imagined or wished for. It looks like it's out of a movie! In the past, I have found The Pastry Garden to be mediocre with the exception of their chocolate mousse cake. Pastries tend to be bland and I'm not sure if they use real butter in the butter cookies. It's been a while and my sweet tooth was acting up so my daughter and I headed over to give them another go. The large cupcakes were beckoning. Our selection: Holy cannoli, Boston cream, red velvet, s'mores, lemon, and carrot. My daughter really enjoyed the carrot, my son liked the Boston cream. I tried the cannoli which was a interesting in theory, but not so much on the execution. The chocolate cake was heavy and dry with very little chocolate flavor. The ganache topping was sprinkled with stale cannoli bits.. I decided to give the smores a try. The same cake recipe topped with a thin layer of marshmallow cream enrobed in chocolate ganache and gram cracker crumbs. All in all, I got the impression that the cupcakes had been previously frozen which was a turn off considering the steep price. The moral of the story; don't be lured in by looks.
