Do you know what? It's not that bad this place. I mean OK it's a Wetherspoon's and most of them have absolutely no soul whatsoever and are constantly full of the world's worst people but Paramount is actually OK. So there. It's full of characters, from crazy old men to schoolkids, it does attract some strange sorts. It's dirt cheap, I mean just plain silly, all Wetherspoons are but it still shocks me when you can buy a five drink round and have change from a tenner...it's just not normal.. However the lack of music is a big factor in making me want to go somewhere else, it's very noticeable and if you're just out for an after work drink and chat, fine but if you're on a night out it's not the best place to head...unless you're skint that is!

Yeeeurch, I hear you cry, a Wetherspoons! Dearest Emma-Louise of the Howard clan, have you gone mad? Almost, but not quite. At the intersection between Oxford Road and Oxford Street, something I've never fully understood, sits the Paramount, so named because of the Paramount cinema on the same road. Like the dreaded Moon Under Water, this Wetherspoons is equally huge, bigger if anything, and it being of JD's family means a couple of things. Inexpensive drinks, that's a given. Cheap pub grub that fills a gap, that's another. Myself and my brotherly friend almost ate here, but we did decide against it eventually, especially when some ominous figure approached us with a bunch of food vouchers for this very pub. He wasn't even working for the pub, how spooky is that? Goodness, isn't it terrible that we city folk can't even accept a simple favour. He said he and his wife get sent the vouchers every month as they're members of some kind of club and they never use them, so when he clocked us looking at the menu he came over. Smarter folk may have gone for it, but we wound up getting shedloads of junk food and booze from Tesco and heading back to my place, as often happens with us. But as Wetherspoons go, I don't mind this one so much. It's cheap, nice to stop off at before a night out, great for catching up with a friend as I found out, and the central location means you've got access to some of Oxford Road's best bars and gig venues. Not seeing any problems so far. Also, the way it's set up is rather pleasant too. It's vast and open plan downstairs, but more intimate and cosy upstairs if you want a quiet drink with someone a little more special. If you're up for saving a little cash, give it a try. And I'm always a fan of free wifi.

    Review Highlights - The Paramount

We were in Manchester, UK overnight the other day on a quick visit, and we're trying to scrounge up a breakfast before our meeting.

The menu was pretty standard, so I quickly have chosen what to have and went to take a seat. The breakfast was of the right temperature, no twists, does the job. If want a quick fix ( depending on how many people are already there) while waiting for your train or stuff at Mosi, than that's the place; otherwise might want to check out things nearby. The wait was a bit too long - but again, this is a pub, not a breakfast place, so not sure it's fair to expect fast service at this time of day.

Although it's traditional and there's nothing that makes you go wow like some nearby trendy bars, it's definitely this which appeals to me - in fact I found a lovely little table towards the back with a roaring fire which warmed me up on a day when the weather was starting to look rather autumnal. I was served by 3 different staff and all were friendly, polite and welcoming. For some bizarre reason I decided to go for their 2 for £12.95 lunch deal (why I needed 2 courses at lunch I'm not sure but it seemed good value - plus I'd been in meetings all day so needed a fair amount of comfort food) and I went for the ham hock terrine to start with (lovely piccalilli) followed by the steak and ale pie with chips and vege's (devine). The quality and taste was excellent and with a very full belly I felt my work here was done! Speaking of work, it was also a good little spot to work for an hour on my laptop afterwards - with free wifi. That's the right way to blend tradition and modern so as the customer has the best of both worlds :-)

This is a proper boozer from a time when men had mutton chops and women just weren't allowed the hell in damn it!! Located in a part of the city that is clearly on the up (just off St Peters Square) it's a traditional boozer of the very old school variety - deceptively sized with a tiny front bar but loads of seating in the back! The drinks on offer are all a little bit stuck in the past for my beer tastes but this isn't a problem for most patrons - they just do lots of bitters, lagers and stouts. I have to say that their beer flights are great value at just over £3.00 where you can get a third of each beer of your choice up to a pint - really good idea and great to see it appearing in more and more pubs! City Arms is somewhere that's cool to pop into if you're after a quick pint or meeting with friends, I just can't see myself wanting to spend all night here - I think I'd get very bored, very quickly of the beers on offer - but this is my own overly pretentious beery opinion!

Cheap drinks as well, and it's 50p for a game of pool. You can also play darts if you want, or just sit there, relax and have a brew. They have a beers garden, and in the afternoon there are a lot of people around smoking and chatting. It's a Joseph Holt pub, so of course, some Manchester Ales can be found, like Maple Moon for instance. Very good beer, I recommend it. All in all, the staff was really friendly.
