Our 'captain' and 'guide', Bethany, was really good at handling the boat, and all that went with it (including us)!! Maximum number of guests is six, today we were four, we all got along well. The kayaking around the little mangrove island was easy despite the moderate wind. Those easily frightened need not be. Bethany imparted a lot of interesting mangrove facts as we went as well as pointing out the different birds that occupy the island. Not really an island as it's all mangroves and no sand, dirt or rock to stand on. Snorkeling that day wasn't great. It had recently rained and the water was a bit murky but we did see a variety of sponges and a few fish. The sail back to port was relaxing, snacks were put out, pineapple and those chunky pretzel things, and for a bit, all was right in the world.

Brought our snacks and liquor onto the tiki boat with our charismatic captain, Kathy who provided mixers and a quick safety drill. We were off right on time and headed out to the sandbar in the Gulf of Mexico. Light drizzle for the first ten minutes then pure sun for the entire two hours. What impressed me most wasn't just the wildlife--though seeing bottle-nosed dolphins and sharks in their natural habitat was incredible--it was the professional camaraderie. Even though there are other tour companies out there, the captains are in constant communication, sharing sightings and even helping each other out with gear or debris in the water. It's rare to see that kind of collective stewardship in a competitive industry. The tour is also deeply educational. The guide did a fantastic job dispelling myths about sharks and explaining the biology of the animals (like the dermal denticles on their skin) with a level of respect that shows they aren't just using nature for a paycheck--they are actively protecting it. Key West Extreme Adventures takes you out into the open ocean for an unforgettable 2-hour tour focused on shark and wildlife viewing. They use a special scent to attract sharks right up to the boat -- and it actually works! Our twins (they're 4) were totally mesmerized watching the yellow sharks feed just feet away. It was exciting, interactive, and surprisingly peaceful out on the water. The owner and staff were amazing with the kids -- super friendly, patient, and clearly passionate about what they do. Our daughter was a little disappointed not to see dolphins (you can't predict nature!), but she still absolutely loved the whole experience. Our son hasn't stopped talking about the sharks. We also spotted stingrays, turtles, and a bunch of sea birds. It felt like a totally unique way to experience the ocean -- nothing touristy or cookie-cutter about it.
