Disclaimer: I had their ice cream from their company van at Spring Revelry music festival, not at brick and mortar business. They were so generous with samples. I tried Dutch letters, goat cheese cherry, and toffee. Again, it was cold outside, but I bought ice cream anyway. Because they were so nice, I bought a 2 scoop size for $11.00. The goat cheese cherry was so good. The toffee one was also really good. Support local business! read more

Friendly staff. This place is very clean. The only thing wrong is that my shake wasn't blended completely, so I had to use a spoon, but other than that, it was perfect. The ice cream was delicious. I love the different flavors they have. read more

Wow I thought I had reveiwed this place...It's soo good that all your thinking about is Ice Cream. THIS is the ORiginal and you can tell as it usually has the Pink Truck out front and lots of people outside having thier IceCream on the patio. I have been watching closely to when the Winter takes my IceCream away but wow this year it's extended thru December sooo this evening I'm stopping and getting my pints. ALL hand packed OutsideScoop goodness in a take~home! I ALWAYS get a few of the Famous waffle cones too. Wow!!! I love REAL ice cream (hiss boo to soft serve). This place has some great flavors and I will definitely be back to try others. My flavor of the day was a strawberry with chocolate chunks in it. I was in such a rush to dig into my yummy waffle cone that I neglected to take a photo or remember the exact name of the flavor. I was first introduced to The Outside Scoop via their ice cream truck at an event. I was impressed with their unique selection of flavors while they're out and about. So, I just had to take my family to the physical location to stare at the 24 flavors there! Ok, ok, we didn't just stare at the 24 flavors. Although, we did stare for a while because they all sounded so good! They allow you to sample before selecting. Which for some reason, we went out of order and selected our flavors and then sampled others before leaving (yeah, I'm confused too). I can't remember the exact flavors we've had there but they were all so good! Smooth, creamy, and bursting with flavor and chunks of ingredients (like candies and nuts). This was the first dish of ice cream our four year old has ever finished on her own! We've since stopped at their truck at the DSM Arts Festival to enjoy more. So worth it! We need to make the drive back to Indianola for more staring! read more

Reichen is the man! Best helper in getting us the best treatment! He keeps the store in check and truly enhances the atmosphere. I've never met another ice cream helper who gave us treatment close to Reichen's. No matter where I am in Iowa, I know the best ice cream is at the Outside Scoop, not because of its tremendous arrangement of flavors, but for Reichen and his outstanding service. read more

I've stopped at the Outside Scoop dozens of times and it's consistently superb. The wide variety of (ever-changing) flavors are delicious and their waffle cones are worth the extra dollar. My last visit involved a Grundae (an 8 scoop sundae), with mocha chocolate chunk, goat cheese, cake batter, cinnamon roll, chocolate Oreo cookie dough, dark chocolate raspberry, S'mores, and cookies and cream ice creams; topped with waffle chips, sliced fresher banana, and cookie dough; two brownies and whipped cream on top. It was a work of art and a divine combination of flavors that perfectly capped off a summer in Indianola. read more

I've walked to their ice cream truck that's parked in downtown twice this week (due to the nice weather) and enjoyed both trips. They have some familiar flavors and some unique ones. You can ask for samples too. I've tried the chocolate brownie, cookie dough, and chocolate with reeses. All 3 taste really good. Creamy with big chunks of reeses and cookie dough. They offer a cup or cone for the ice cream. Only negative thing is the price is quite high for a scoop. But the great service, convenience factor and that I'm supporting a local business outweighs the price. Will visit this truck many times during the summer. read more

Oh my goodness! This is one of the best ice cream places I've ever been to. Just a little local business making a big mark in the world of ice cream! They regularly have a changing selection of homemade flavors: usually around 15 or so it seems on their chalkboard; and their complete with originally offerings, like chocolate Oreo cookie dough, mint Oreo, Peanut Butter, along with the usual ones of vanilla, butter pecan, and whatnot. They even have cereal flavored selections, like Lucky Charms! One of the best things about them is that they put actual pieces/chunks of the real ingredients into the ice cream, not the "off brand." If it's Oreo ice cream, they use real Oreos. You'll have to try it in a homemade waffle cone too. They twists them narrower than most, so it's not so cumbersome and when you get to the bottom you'll have about three layers of waffle to munch through! Yum! read more

A friend recommended I stop here while in town! Great Ice cream and many flavors to choose from! Didn't know what to get, so I got the sampler which you can choose 4 different flavors. A lot of ice cream and can definitely be split between 2 people. They had a line out the door, so I take it's the place to be during the summer! read more

I hate to say that I totally forgot to write this at the time of us visiting them. We found them at the http://www.vintageandmadefair.com/ October 10th. We found some great stuff that day, saw some great friends and ate some excellent food! The guys at The Outside Scoop have some of the most amazing ice cream there is! The mini-yelper got a one scoop bowl of chocolate frosted cup cake and the wife and I both got apple cider floats with vanilla bean ice cream. We highly recommend these guys for a very tasty treat whenever you see them!!! read more

Great ice cream with both familiar and unusual flavors. One such flavor was "Dutch Letter", based on a yummy pastry sold in stores locally. Long lines can force to you wait, but that indicates how much interest there is in the ice cream. read more

Just go! It is a little splurge but most everything delicious. Blueberry lemonade is a favorite. But try anything with the hot fudge sauce, yum! Been to two events that had them which was awesome but the store has even more flavors. read more

Wow, this ice cream place is probably best in terms of unique flavor. I ended up getting butter pecan since the dutch letter was just too sugary for me. It was at least good to sample to figure out which one is worth getting. I am more into nuts or something crunchy to munch on while I eat ice cream. Alot of people came in and the parking is a bit tight. There are the famous trucks in the way but I guess it is just to show off themselves. Well, I enjoyed the waffle cone as well so that's an extra plus too with the homemade ice cream. read more

All the ice cream is "homemade". There is always a great variety of flavors. My favorite so far has been chocolate with pretzels. We've also tried banana, red velvet cake, pumpkin, cinnamon, cake batter, and several other flavors. They are always quick to let you try a new flavor and the prices are very reasonable. The helpings are LARGE! I can usually barely finish 1 scoop in a sugar cone. They pre pack the cone and then put a giant scoop on top. Great local business! read more

This place is outstanding, It's locally owned, family friendly and the ice cream is homemade and the owner isn't afraid to experiment with some funky flavors that can be scary, but fun! The place is opened seasonally (it reopens May 10, and trust me, I'll be there!), and is always serving someone. He's also got a giant pink truck that sells on the road at local events. Don't overlook it if you are out and about. He's definitely worth the drive or extra price for real, homemade ice cream. read more

Wowee!!! This is it. We were in town for another reason and I thought I would look up a local treat and here we are! If you are looking too, stop and come here. Homemade ice cream, great prices and amazing flavors. We tried the dutch letter, dark chocolate, salted caramel and the chocolate almond brittle. Of the 4, our faves were the dutch letter and salted caramel, which is unusual as we both tend to favor chocolate. Even though we absolutely loved it, my husband thought the dark chocolate wasn't rich or chocolate enough, but that didn't keep him from enjoying it. read more

It is so look hard not to go there every day when you live so close. My whole family loves this place. My personal favorite is the salted caramel...yeah, pretty boring, but i have tried a many flavors you won't find anywhere else nutella was awesome, my daughter loved the lucky charms and Dutch letter rocks! It's all home made and amazing. If you ever get a chance, you would miss out if you didn't try it. read more

The Outside Scoop boasts some of the most delicious ice cream in all of Indianola! I've thoroughly enjoyed each of my trips there. They have a huge variety of different flavors and different delicacies one might try. I had a delicious sundae once and had some amazing chocolate chip ice cream on another occasion. Their hot fudge is particularly delectable. I'd recommend this highly to anyone needing a sugar fix. read more

I love The Outside Scoop. Joe has always used real ingredients for his flavored (nothing artificial) and only whole fat milk for the smoothest and richest ice cream around. I used to work at DQ and I don't even consider that place until Joe shuts down for the winter. Definitely stop in and give some business to the local guy, you won't regret it! read more

My favorite ice cream in central Iowa, worth a trip to Indianola. Now that food trucks are allowed in Des Moines, hopefully I won't have to drive as far for my favorite flavors, I'll be able to get it downtown from their ice cream truck! Last summer, my family visited us from Eastern Iowa and after they sampled the ice cream, they ran over to Hyvee for a styrofoam cooler and dry ice to take several pints back home with them. If they have the apple crisp, that is my favorite flavor with a bit of caramel syrup. The blueberry or strawberry lemonade are a close second. read more

I ordered a taco bar for a rehearsal dinner from Hy-vee Catering in Indianola IA. The food was a…read moremess! The hot food was served in thin foil pans that didn't fit in the frames so everything was leaning to one side looking like it might fall out. The young man who set up the food seemed to have no experience so he didn't recognize that this was a problem. This wasn't the server's fault, Hy-vee should never have sent the food in disposable foil pans. I ordered both chicken and beef for the taco bar and somehow the chicken got lost during the setup process and it wasn't available to our guests. The Hy-vee employee who set up the taco bar had no idea that we had ordered it. We paid for it and never received it. The dessert was supposed to be cheesecake. We received a pan of "no-bake" cheesecake. I was never told that we were going to receive something that was obviously not cheesecake. It was a complete mess. It arrived in a large foil pan with no utensil. I asked the server from Hy-vee to put it on plates. He borrowed a spatula from the winery and slapped it on plates. It looked like a pile of mush on the plates. Communication between Hy-vee catering and the winery where the rehearsal dinner was held was poor. The Manager at the winery was told that only one table would be needed for the food so that was what was set up. We had to scramble to get additional tables for food after our guests and the Hy-vee catering person arrived. I was embarrassed by the food and presentation. My husband and I had to help the inexperienced Hy-vee server try to set things up when we wanted to be spending time with our guests. I would never recommend Hy-vee Catering.
