Okay so here is the thing, there are two mosque kitchens. The story is that the owners of the one that opened years ago by the mosque decided to move it and is today called the same 'Mosque kitchen' and is by the corner of Nicholsen Square. Then the mosque decided to open the kitchen of theirs under the name 'The original mosque kitchen' Since I've always gone to the mosque I know that the brain behind the menu and the kitchen staff moved along to the Mosque Kitchen. So out of curtsy to the first kitchen I have since they moved gone to eat there. I went once and tried the food here at The Original Mosque Kitchen and didn't really enjoy it and continued to go to the first one. Then yesterday when I saw that people was reviewing the two kitchens under the same name I felt this had to be sorted but more important for me I decided to take off my curtsy jacket and try it again with open heart and free mind. So here is my review. One thing is for sure that the terrace here is very charming and I love the feeling of sitting sheltered from the rain and enjoy food outside. They might not me the original kitchen but it is a very original place. The staff is so welcoming and nice and I get happy just entering the kitchen to order food. The menu is just the same with option of lamb curry, chicken curry, barbecue chicken, grilled lamb shish, spinach mix, lentil sauce, chickpea sauce, vegetable stew and rice for all dishes. The price is amazing, I had lamb curry with rice and lentil sauce and paid £5.50 including a tropical juice. WOW! The portions are massive and one has to ask to get less if not to hungry and wish to respect food. The lamb was a bit dry, but the flavours of the sauce, lentil and rice was absolutely delicious and I loved it. I have to say that if I add the over all experience it is a clear 4 star. If the meat wasn't dry it would have been a 5 star. So next will be to try the Mosque Kitchen and decide with a fresh mind where I will go from now on.

A picture of half spinach and potato curry, half chickpea masala. 2 veggie curries for £4.50--and yes, there's always this much!

As a student at the University of Edinburgh, with a tight budget to boot, this is definitely the place to go to refuel for very little cash, and is extremely convenient and cosy for an afternoon lunch after class! The prices are very good, especially since the portions are huge! (Don't worry though, this is a place where you CAN get the food to go if you don't finish!) The veggie curries are excellent, and when you can get 2 for £4.50, there is literally no losing. Unlike the other Mosque Kitchen on Nicholson St, this one feels a bit more like a cafe. It's a bit tucked away, but there are signs for it outside the mosque. My friends and I would have lecture until 1 on Fridays, in a building right across the street from the mosque, and we now have a weekly ritual of going every week--even now when classres are over! It's become one of our favourite aces and I know I look forward to it every week!

Well this has to be the best curry cafe I've yet found in Edinburgh / Scotland…read more As with all such establishments, the decor is functional - you come here for the authenticity of the food. It's always a good sign when a curry cafe has Nihari on the menu, as not everywhere offers this slow cooked dish. I try to be a traditionalist wherever possible though so, having arrived late afternoon, I wasn't going to have what is considered to be a Breakfast / Morning curry. I'll head over next time for the 11:30 opening to try the Nihari - gives me another excuse :-) Today I went for a dish that has become a staple in Pakistani food culture, Haleem. Adapted hundreds of years ago from the original Harisah recipes which were first documented in the Middle East sometime between the year 900 and 1000, Haleem is now prepared and enjoyed in Pakistani family homes and restaurants all over the world. At just a fiver (currently) for Haleem and a hot, buttered Naan, this medium spiced dish is not only very tasty, but is also superb value. Today I had Beef Haleem. It was delicious. The dish is prepared with Beef, Wheat, Barley and Lentils (plus spices) and it is slow cooked to such an extent that the beef completely blends into the other ingredients so the dish becomes a thick sauce "curry". Tearing off a corner of Naan and dipping it in, it tasted fantastic. The Marhaba Kitchen is a proper curry cafe and the owner / chef could not have made me any more welcome. Next visit - Nihari time! :-)

The food was excellent, the sauces were done perfectly and everything was incredibly flavorful. Only thing that wasn't quite what we were expecting was the garlic naan, which wasn't as garlicky as we expected, but was nonetheless exactly what we needed for the leftover sauce. The main negative reviews had been about the service, but the servers here were so nice, quick, and helpful. All around great. Would definitely go back if we had more time, but unfortunately our days are numbered in Edinburgh. Highly recommend!!!

Hostile, disrespectful, and completely unacceptable behaviour…read moreOn 29 January 2026 at 13:06, while collecting a delivery order, a staff member shouted at me inside the restaurant in front of customers, then forced me outside and continued speaking aggressively. I asked a basic clarification question and was treated with open hostility and public humiliation. There was no justification for this behaviour. This was not a misunderstanding -- it was purely unprofessional conduct and abuse of power toward a delivery driver. Using "policy" or "council rules" as an excuse does not justify shouting at someone or treating them with disrespect. This restaurant clearly lacks basic standards of professionalism and respect. Delivery drivers should be extremely cautious, and management urgently needs to address how staff speak to people who are simply doing their job. This experience was unacceptable.

We had finally narrowed it down to Indian food but we still couldn't choose a restaurant. I'll be honest my vote was for a different restaurant so I wasn't too excited about going to the place I didn't choose. I know I was being a brat but this review gets better. Because I came in wanted to prove that my choice would have been better (again so bratty). When we walked in everyone working was so nice and friendly they immediately melted my anger away. I ordered the mango lassi to drink and for my entree I got the paneer marsala. Both items were delicious. I do wish I could have controlled the spice a bit more but that could have been on me and I may have misunderstood. This restaurant wasn't the cleanest, it wasn't gross by any means it just seemed like they were short on staff and didn't have time to clean the bathrooms that day. All in all I really came around and had to eat my own words Zest was delicious and I am very glad I lost!!!

We of course started checking out the menu which had a number of options. We started with appetizers which we get a number of. We went with the Lovely Garlic Mushrooms, Sabzi Samosa, Chicken Pakora, and the Himalayan Crushed Chilli Chicken which is an entrée but it sounded good so we got it for the table. All the appetizers were good but what really stuck out to me what the Chicken Pakora, and the Himalayan Crushed Chilli Chicken. I had never had Chicken Pakora but it was great. They were perfectly fried so crispy and the batter had so much flavor. Will for sure be getting me Chicken Pakora in the future. The Himalayan Crushed Chilli Chicken was also very good. I will say this is not like the fried Chilli Chicken I have had at other Indian restaurants but this was full of amazing flavor. It's also marked as a Hot dish but it wasn't over powering at all. For my entrée I will say I ended up going pretty basic and went with Chicken Tikka Massalam but it was just calling my name that night. I comes mild but asked if I could get it hot. Our server did look at me like I was crazy but he said they would give it a try. I will say the rest of our party was a little more adventurous. Once my Chicken Tikka Massalam came out I got into it and it was very good. My sister got the Korma with Chicken (at least that's what she ordered) but she was given Korma with Lamb. I tried hers and I liked it even more then my Tikka and she loved my Tikka she we traded. I'm glad I did too. The Lamb so so tender for sure will be doing this more too.I will say we were a little nervous at Zest when first ordering but after our meal everyone talked about how much we enjoyed everything. For sure a good spot for Indian!

And that's saying a lot since I've eaten Indian cuisine all over the world. I had the lamb biryani which was fantastic. Medium spice was the perfect heat. My mother got the chicken curry and the chicken was perfectly cooked - very tender. We had regular and garlic naan, which we two massive pieces of naan. Great tasting and textured naan. One piece is good for 2 people, so we were very happy. Note - if the dish doesn't say it comes with rice, I recommend ordering a side of rice. The side is a small bowl of rice. Service 5/5: The staff is very friendly and come to ask you if everything is okay. The food comes out quickly and fresh too. Overall 5/5: One of the best Indian cuisines I've had.
