The Old Bridge Inn from the front

My American family of Scottish descent spent a week in Aviemore in July 2014. The Old Bridge Inn was a delight - regarded by everyone in the family as the best pub we found during our two and a half week adventure through Scotland and northern England. Charming decorations and great patrons, a fine selection of real ales from the local Cairngorm Brewery, several other draught beers, a wide selection of bottled beer from Scotland and beyond (or, as they called it, Bottled Foreign Muck), and a fascinating selection of perhaps 100 single malt whiskys from what seemed like every distillery in Scotland. I made it a point to try a new whisky (or three, or five) on each visit to this quaint old pub on the banks of the river Spey, and the folks behind the bar were very helpful and knowledgeable when I asked for advice, offering me a sniff of the bottle to see if the aroma appealed to me, offering suggestions, and being exceptionally cordial the entire time. During our three visits, we met lively and informative customers, listened to some great music piped in, petted a great big shaggy dog who seemed quite at home in the place, and were exceptionally pleased to have found the Old Bridge Inn. Should the winds ever blow me to Aviemore again, this will be on my list of places to return to for a wee dram, a pint and some merriment.

Dinner here was the perfect way to end a day of rainy exploring in the Cairngorms. The sun came out and we arrived at The Old Bridge Inn to discover it was Midsummer and they were celebrating. The riverside was lined with hammocks, hog roast and the most gigantic bonfire I have ever seen! The staff here were lovely and the restaurant looked beautiful- candlelit with twinkly fairy light on the ceiling. The food did not disappoint, just take a look at the pictures!! To start we shared the twice cooked lamb flank, and it was SO delicious. The meat was beautifully soft and melt in the mouth. For mains I had hake with mussels and it was to die for, the boy went for duck which came with pistachios and cherries and he claimed it was the best thing he had eaten in a long time! For dessert he had a hot chocolate cake with peanut butter brittle and blood orange sorbet. My dessert was even more delicious I think- creme brulee with churros and mandarin sorbet, mmmm! Would thoroughly recommend a visit here when visiting this beautiful part of Scotland.

Crema Catalana at The Old Bridge Inn

Today was my 2nd trip to The Old Bridge Inn. Last time was for a friend's Hen Doo... we dined in the restaurant and enjoyed the banter in the bar afterwards. Today we had lunch in the bar. I had the harissa spiced chicken & creme fraiche wrap which I really enjoyed but it would have benefited from a side of fries/wedges to satisfy a hungry walker! For dessert I had Crema Catalana with raspberry ice cream on the side... this was really delicious and the caramel topping on the Crema Catalana was perfectly crunchy! The Old Bridge Inn is a lovely cosy traditional pub which was pram friendly at lunch today. The food was good, the fire was warming... my kind of pub. At weekends and evenings it is more lively with live music and great banter. Worth a visit if you are in the area!

Obnoxious and dishonest staff turns families with children away for no reason. Disgusting.

Sometimes, one or two employees are the weakest links that destroy a team's effort to provide an…read moreotherwise fine dining experience. That was the case here, as two young women seemed to split the service for our group of five. Neither one seemed to feel any responsibility for our table, or to be interested in actually serving. Just ordering water was a chore. There were mistakes in the drinks and food order, eventually rectified. But they saved the worst for the end. We told each in unmistakable terms that we would like to box/wrap approximately half of three meals so that we could enjoy desserts. Later, after the food taken away failed to re-appear, we were told, "There's been a bit of a mix-up." All the food had been thrown away. I feel badly for saying so, because the food was excellent and the venue a pleasant one. But this was the most lackadaisical service we received in five weeks of European travel.

We were staying at the nearby Invernairne Hotel (highly recommend), and our hosts suggested…read moreBandstand for a walkably close supper. Very friendly server, beautiful views and a good overall vibe. The food was very good, especially the steak and ale pie. We were a bit travel-weary at this point, and Bandstand was a perfect spot to have a relaxing, low-key meal and bracing drinks while enjoying views of the water. Pay them a visit!

Came here on a wet and windy evening and enjoyed a great dinner. We came early (before 6) as our…read moreB&B advised everything quite full, and were given a nice corner table next to a couple of regulars who filled us in on local sights. Staff were friendly and service was good. Started with garlic bread and a pint, then I had the steak and black pudding pie while my wife had the Mongolian beer. Both very tasty and served piping hot. Cleaned the plates! A sundae for desert was a good way to finish. Regular bar in the other room was crowded and noisy - seems like a popular meeting spot. Altogether a very pleasant experience

The Lochy was fine for what it was for us--a very casual, very basic pub dinner after a relatively…read morelong travel day from Edinburgh--but it was probably the most average food we had of nine or ten days of mostly great eating in Scotland. Getting here was the most special, maybe. Having driven a car on the left for the first time ever on this day, wanting to have a beer or two, and staying in an apartment in nearby Corpach, we didn't really want to drive on this evening. On a beautiful evening, we investigated the Corpach waterfront (the end (the beginning?) of the Caledonian Canal) and took in the unbelievable views along the waterfront path (the Corpach shipwreck, Ben Nevis, the loch, and so on), and we wandered on over to Caol and the Lochy. (We returned via the canal path itself; you can jump on just across the street from the Lochy.) I see from Tripadvisor that plenty of tourists get to the Lochy, but it sure seemed like a locals' spot on the night we were there, with a number of families present. Although the outside of the place suggests that it might contain a dim warren of rooms, it's actually a couple of brightly lit larger rooms with a bar in the middle, where you order your food and drinks. Venison burger for me was pretty tasty--although it came only with caramalized onions and goat cheese, which left things a little dry--and the wife's fish and chips were OK. Like I say above, the food was fine, but not especially memorable. Several beers were on draft, and everything was reasonably priced. 3.5 stars.
