I came to Charlottesville for an interview and stopped in to The Nook for brunch. The hubby and I were pleasantly surprised. The outside was simple but the food was amazing. I had an omelet and my husband had a sandwich. Both were delicious. My only complaint was the service. I think our server forgot about us twice as someone else had to bring to-go containers and I had to get my own straw. We chalked it up so him possibly being new. I have been to the nook quite a bit over the years. The cozy diner feel with comfort food option never really goes out of style? That being said, it's always been a solid 3-4 star joint on a good day as it was typically just cheap diner food they are cranking out; HOWEVER that all seems to have changed. The food is still well priced and diner style, but the quality recently has blown me away. Truly delicious and you will never ever leave hungry. My personal favourite is the country fried steak breakfast or the nook Mac options for lunch but you really can't go wrong with anything on their menu. read more

Doesn't seem like there are a ton of good sit-down breakfast options in Charlottesville area but decided to try Nook. Had to put our name on the list Sunday morning and walked the mall while we waited ~30 mins. We were able to eat outside since it was nice out. The food was fine (nothing over the top). The ambiance is absolutely beautiful. The wait staff is amazing. I had the biscuits and gravy which were delicious. I do recommend if you get scrambled eggs and prefer them to be more of a medium scramble make sure to mention that. I didn't and they were a little runny for my liking. My wife got the blueberry pancakes which were delicious. We started with the cinnamon roll OMG the cream cheese frosting was great. We also got the Apple cider mimosas which were delicious. Came here twice when I was visiting a friend in Virginia: once for brunch and another time for afternoon snack. For brunch, we shared the crab cake benedict, which was excellent. I wanted to come back here to try their Mac and cheese since there was such a unique variety. We ended up splitting onion rings and the eastern shore Mac and cheese (crab pieces). The Mac and cheese wasn't as good as I expected, since the flavor was mild, and there wasn't many crab pieces. I also like my Mac and cheese more gooey. The onion rings were surprisingly good -hot and crunchy, but I'm not a huge fan of onion rings. My friend loved it, and she said she would come here again to reorder the onion rings so I guess that means they pass the test! read more

Stopped in at The Nook today for late breakfast. Not crowded. Ordered the " All In Breakfast" of scrambled eggs, potatoes, bacon and wheat toast, OJ and coffee. Seated right away. Placed order and it arrived without toast, eggs were dried out, potatoes over cooked and burnt, bacon was ok. I told two people about the toast. One female went off and never came back. The male, later asked how everything was and I told I didn't get the toast. He returned with it. He never asked me if I would like a coffee refill. All in all this was a sub-par experience that has caused me to reconsider this restaurant. It's too bad because prior experiences there were fine. I wavered between one and two stars. An ok experience. We ordered chicken biscuits and the breakfast potatoes. The chicken and the biscuits were on the drier side with minimal honey drizzled on the chicken. The potatoes were seasoned alright; I wish they could have had a crispier texture. The prices were also a bit higher for the quality of food and average service. The nook is one of my favorite spots in cville. I'm never disappointed with a meal here and I'd choose this breakfast/lunch spot over any other diner or breakfast place in town. There are so many options on the menu, it's affordable, and the service is some of the best. The staff makes you feel well taken care of. They have prime outdoor seating in the downtown mall! They have a large breakfast and lunch menu. There's outdoor and indoor seating, and a bar inside. The staff were very friendly and attentive. The food was good. Only negative is they are a bit pricey. We paid over $50 for 2 people for breakfast. It's $4.5 for a glass of juice. We ordered the All the Way Breakfast and the Sausage Gravy Breakfast. Both were delicious. The sausage gravy has thick sausage on it and the biscuits were soft and fresh. read more

My favorite breakfast in all of Charlottesville! I adore the Nook. It's your classic diner vibe (been open on the Downtown Mall since the 1950s) but with a huge, up-to-food-trend menu offering all day breakfast, incredible French toast and waffle variations, omelettes, an entire page of specialty mac and cheeses, appetizers, lunch sandwiches, salads, and entrees, and desserts. Last time I went, everyone in our group ordered two entrees because everything was too good to decide on just one dish. The mac and cheeses were amazingly cheesy, fried pickles hot and crisp, and the bananas foster waffle was the best waffle I have ever had. Seriously, the syrupy caramelized bananas on the fluffy and thick waffle were out of this world. It'll be crowded on weekends, but turnaround is quick and service just as timely! This is a nice breakfast/brink/lunch spot located right downtown on Main St.! The restaurant is located inside one of the renovated store fronts in historic Charlottesville. We chose to sit inside because of the weather today. Inside there is a bar area as well as booths for dining. The walls are decorated with local artwork and the Nook has a "Diner" type feel. Our waitress wore both mask and gloves during service, which was nice. We were also far enough spaced between tables to feel comfortable eating. I ordered a sweet tea which was a good southern staple and my husband had the brewed coffee. Condiments for coffee as well as butter, jams, salt, and pepper are on each table. Today I chose to try the biscuits and gravy which are always a hit in my book! These come with eggs anyway, and breakfast potatoes. I ordered my eggs (egg whites) which actually came out wrong but I am used to this happening as it's not as normal of an order. They quickly remade the eggs and I had them in no time! The eggs were cooked good but you can't go too wrong with that! The country potatoes were bits of roasted potatoes with red and green peppers and onions. Not my favorite style breakfast potatoes but to each his own. The biscuits and gravy were the main attraction. The gravy was creamy and there were large chunks of meaty sausage in the gravy. The biscuit was one large biscuit halved under the gravy. The gravy was pretty good, the biscuits tasted to me like they were made in a larger batch previously and maybe microwaved. I am not sure, but it's a certain texture and taste. I still ate every bite though! My husband had the pancakes which were great and evenly cooked. Syrup came offered on the side which I didn't get to try but my husband said it tasted like natural syrup. He loved his eggs which were cooked over easy and to perfection! His plate also came with bacon which we usually order "extra crispy". We didn't so it came the way they made it which seemed to be a medium cook. I believe slit of people prefer this way. We didn't visit the restrooms but the dining areas were clean and welcoming. I would like to come back another time and try their sandwiches and update my review in the future! read more

Came in for breakfast during the week, and then Friday night. They were open for dinner on Fridays with a special menu. Both meals were amazing. You have to try the crab cake benedict. They load up the crab cakes with lots of crab, and they taste better than places that will charge $30 and up for crab cake dinners. Eggs were poached perfectly. Hollandaise smooth and savory. Dinner was just as good. We had the paella and holy cow, that was amazing for an under $20 paella. Also the pork belly sandwich with Asian vegetables was great. Party had egg/potatoes crabcake, avo toast, soup. Out of soup, then a little later "we found some." How are you out and suddenly "find some." Pretty sure it was boxed soup with a few herbs on top, purchased it many times myself, always i overly salted. If I'm wrong...well, back to soup school. The potatoes were very greasy. Avocado toast....this I'm an expert on, just lacking. Trying to fancy and missed. Reminded me of the food places where I normally live which I tried to get away from. There's not another restaurant in town like this place. Menu has some fun stuff, like apple churro french toast and avocado bacon eggs benedict. Also has some great breakfast classics like your english breakfast or a really tasty sausage gravy. We havent been here to try the lunch yet, but they had a tasty dinner menu last summer for the Friday concert series. Best part of this whole place is the drinks. Do yourself a favor and get a cider mimosa or the strawberry rose drink. read more

Walked up on a Saturday afternoon about 1:20, were told no wait if we could grab bar seats which we did. Placed our order within 10 minutes and then waited FIFTY minutes for the food to come. We ordered a salad and a wrap, nothing extravagant that takes a long time. The server did keep apologizing saying the kitchen is backed up, but if you know your kitchen is that slammed you should tell people prior to them placing an order. Once the food did arrive, it was only ok. The chicken in the wrap and on the salad was very bland. Disappointed! read more

Found this place almost by accident. The place looks fantastic. The staff were all incredibly friendly. Drinks (peach bellini & bacon maple old fashioned) were great. The benedict was awesome. I don't know what they do but the hollandaise was so very good. Looking forward to visiting Charlottesville again just for this place. read more

Stopped for dinner on Tuesday, a sunny day in March with a temp in the 60s. We were hoping to sit outside, but the restaurant wasn't staffed to provide full service to the patio. One employee said that we were welcome to place a take out order and sit out there, which is exactly what we did. She did a great job of insuring we had everything we needed (napkins, utensils, ketchup, etc.). We ordered a hamburger and a roast beef sandwich, both with fries. Crinkle cut fries were standard frozen fries and both sandwiches were just okay. I'd stop again, but would definitely try breakfast as it's served all day. My kids each ordered the pancakes as a treat after their dyslexia tutoring. We waited over an hour with no food for them whatsoever. It wasn't even in sight when we finally got up and left. It's not worth 9 dollars plus tax, and the boxed version from the local grocery or homemade is far better in terms of taste. A downtown mall staple since 1951, The Nook endures because it stays true to itself. Old fashioned milk shakes, BBQ meatloaf, and a whole page of Mac and Cheese variations, plus loads of sandwich and salad options. A nice twist on the Rueben - - a Rachel, with turkey instead of corned beef and coleslaw instead of sauerkraut. Only tiny comment there is that it's served toasted, not grilled. And grilling a sandwich like that is what makes it a thing of beauty instead of just a good sandwich. The Nook is a comfortable place to have a filling meal, plus it's unpretentious atmosphere is a nice foil to some of the spoiled fancy pants places taking over the downtown mall. read more

Only leaving 1 star since we got compensated for our food. Seemed to be first day of the special and they took about an hour to make the special. I got a pancake breakfast and I got it when my fiancé got her food as well. My sunny side up eggs were rubbery, my pancake was rock hard, and my bacon was basically jerky. We were in the area visiting some wineries and we stopped in Charlottesville for lunch and decided to try the Nook because of the outdoor seating, that's where the goodness stopped. I had the Pub Sandwich which turned into a dry French Dip, minus the dip (au jus) or French part. My wife had a semi-tasteless veggie burger with chips and instead got fries. I'm only deducting one star because I want to write an honest review based on the visit I had. My daughter suggested this spot as a good place to do Sunday brunch. Upon arrival we were greeted and only had to wait a couple of min for a table. The vibe is very relaxed. I was looking forward to some breakfast food. We were not acknowledged for quite some time. I believe that a gentleman at an adjacent table alerted a server on our behalf because she came right over apologetically after speaking to him. Anyway, knowing that we had been waiting she took our drink orders and our food order right away. We both ordered breakfast food. My daughter ordered her favorite item on the menu, the All the Way Breakfast. She ordered hard fried eggs, bacon, biscuit & potatoes. Everything on her plate was cooked as it should be and satisfactory for her. I ordered the Pancake Breakfast - two eggs, scrambled, a choc chip pancake and bacon (I asked for extra extra crispy). When our food came out I was so ecstatic that my bacon was cooked as I asked for it... I thought to myself that I was going to leave a huge tip! I wanted to eat my eggs first while they were warm so by the time I got to my pancake I realized that it was plain - no choc chips. I was bummed and short of making a scene could not get our waitresses attention despite her checking on all the tables just around us. I ate the pancake anyway and when she finally did come back to the table I had a small piece of pancake still to eat so I was able to show her the mistake. She was apologetic and said I should have notified her earlier, that she would have had the kitchen make a new, correct pancake. I informed her that I was not able to get her attention, and again she apologized. Now, it's not her fault that the kitchen plated in incorrect item but it is her responsibility to make sure the correct items are delivered to the table. I still left a generous tip and look forward to returning next time I'm in town. read more
