Andrew Coggings, former owner of the Preston Park Tavern, which was a Sustainable Pub of the year winner, is very much heading that way with his new gourmet burger restaurant. Attention to detail is important here, as is the comfortable decor and a friendly and welcoming environment. The tables are made with recycled wood, there are bare brick walls, and beautiful photography of iconic characters around Brighton throughout the restaurant. There is a lovely little sun trap courtyard out the back for the warmer summer months, although some evenings they have to shut early due to close by neighbours. As soon as you walk in you are greeted by friendly staff, and seated with in house filtered water. The menu consists of burgers, with a couple of salads and sides to accompany them, and there are always a couple of specials on the blackboards, usually one meat, one vegetarian. All of the burgers are available to be gluten free, and they have wonderful gluten free buns from Sussex Bread Company, that hold up to the fillings really well, but more about that soon. As I have been here many of times, I have developed a favourite, which is the 6oz beef with mustard rarebit and mushroom tapanade. The rarebit comes oozing down the side of the burger, and the mushroom tapanade is delicious and goes so well with the beef. The beef has always comes rare, so do ask if you would like it cooked a little more. As I cannot eat wheat, I always order the gluten free bun, and it is soft and springy, not too dense, but dense enough to not fall apart in your hands and can soak up the sauce and juice within. The burgers are served on wooden boards, and come with the most delicious salad leaves I have ever eaten, and a side of triple cooked chips which you can either have cooked in vegetable oil, or beef dripping. The beef dripping chips have always been my choice, and are crunchy and thick with amazing flavour. My partner usually orders the chicken burger, with crispy bacon, avocado and salad and loves it every time. The Chicken breast is always moist and succulent, and the avocado is very tasty. I haven't been with anyone that has ordered the vegetarian burgers, so would love to hear someone else's feedback, as they do all sound great! The drinks are all local too, except the wine is from all over the world. The Sauvignon Blanc is particularly delicious. Definitely pop by to Coggings and Co when you can, the burgers are slightly more than your usual place, but they do come with chips and it's totally worth it! Better are the large modern conservatory at the back and the beer garden, although the traffic noise is still clearly audible outside. It's also more of a restaurant with pub frontage than a pub: there's an Italian restaurant and most of the staff are Italian. Granted, they are cheerful and helpful, but it doesn't feel much like a pub. They have three real ales on tap, including Harvey's Sussex Best Bitter, but the pint of 'Brighton Rock' I had was cloudy and on the turn. Worst for me - though I realise this is rather specific - I was hoping to catch a bus into Brighton. The roads into Brighton can get quite blocked up in the summer weekends so I'd advise you to pull off at Pycombe, have some nice food and a few beers and wait until the traffic dies down.

Again, it will cost you but they source from some excellent continental vineyards directly and some of the bottles may really reinvent your understanding of wine. Its a fair walk from the center of town but well worth the trek. Its a gastro pub as it should be in my opinion; non pretentious, friendly and comfortable. The whole place has that Parisian bistro feel which I love. The place recently won a 'Bib Gourmand' award - so when my starter, trio of paortland crab with crab souffle, crab bisque & hot crab toast arrived I knew why. It was presented on a black slate tile which looked amazing and tasted even better. For the main I went for the haunch of venison which can sometimes be a touch too gamey but it was perfectly cooked and seasoned. We had starter and main each, a bottle of white wine (plus a glass of red with my venison) and coffees (mine was Irish) and the bill came to around £75. All Gingerman restaurants give you a stamp on a reward card for every £25 you spend though, once you fill up your card you get a two course meal for one to use at any of their places. The food is not a long way off Michelin star quality in my opinion so I think its extremely reasonable here.
