We stopped here for a late lunch when visiting Captiva Island. Mucky Duck was the local recommendation, but it does have a tourist trap feel to it. Parking was tight but we were able to find a spot. Service was a little slow and a bit curt, but despite us coming at an off-hour (~3pm), the restaurant was pretty full and lively, so I'll give service a pass. We started with the calamari as an appetizer. The calamari was excellent! It was served hot and each piece was tender - no notes. I also sampled the shrimp bisque but it was quite chunky/thick and not creamy. It felt like the texture came from puréeing the shrimp which I found to be off-putting. It's served with oyster crackers. My friend and I ordered the seafood platter, which is big enough to share. It came with clam strips, fried shrimp, peel and eat steamed shrimp, a piece of fried fish, a single bbq shrimp, French fries (similar to McDonald's shoestring fries), coleslaw, and all the necessary condiments - tartar sauce, cocktail sauces, and an aioli. It was quite filling. My favorites from the platter were the fried shrimp and steamed shrimp - they were cooked nicely and had good texture. While we were eating, the table next to us ordered the shrimp platter and crunchy shrimp - both looked really good. I was least impressed by the lone bbq shrimp - it was a grilled shrimp and topped with bbq sauce, which didn't add anything. You'd think because there was only one piece of shrimp, that it would be something special... it was anything but. Our table also ordered the Chicken Marco Rosa (chicken breast with goat cheese, sundried tomatoes, basil, and a lemon butter sauce, served with potatoes and green beans) and shrimp tacos. The lemon butter sauce was very tasty. The shrimp tacos come with two tacos and are also served with chips and salsa. The tortilla chips are comically and obviously store-bought. Overall, I would say the food is good, but nothing exceptional or worth going out of your way for. The grouper sandwich is market price, which was $40+ (which I find absurd). The Mucky Duck is "THE place to be" at sunset, but when you come at a time other than sunset, it's pretty average. read more

I was excited to learn that this restaurant had finally reopened here after suffering damage from the last hurricane. Most everyone else seemed happy to support them, too, as they were quite busy at lunch. They have outside seating -- particularly good for the beach people in their covered bathing suits and sandy feet. Inside, it's air conditioned and the tables are spaced close together. I decided to do shrimp and shrimp. I started with a cup of their shrimp bisque. It was just okay. Warm on top but hotter as you dug down. After that, I had the steamed shrimp appetizer. This was much better! Peel n eat shrimp -- a nice portion -- along with cocktail sauce. I should have gotten some old bay on the side to jazz it up, but I still liked it. My husband had a Caesar salad with added grilled shrimp. It was a bit light on the dressing so he got some more to add in. The salad was fine once he got the extra dressing. I thought they should have removed the tail shells from his shrimp, however. I'm glad we came to try them, again. Now we know. They will do well here. read more

We decide to come to this place as we came here long time ago , but now is definitely something different, the plates are super high priced and what you get is just a slap in the face , we ordered some bbq shrimp with bacon , well .... This people couldn't find the smallest shrimp , we were so surprised. Then after how terrible food was and over highly priced, we thought we can at least go to the beach for a few minutes after we finished eating and then suddenly the restaurant parking attendant started telling us we need to go and can only park to eat there but not for beach , it was not even full , had lots of parking and in the past you were able to do it , that's why it was so great .... So happy to see this iconic establishment re-open after hurricane Ivan in 2022. It's been 40 years since I've been here to catch a sunset while staying on Sanibel Island. The vibe in this rebuilt / relaunched place was uplifting. We ordered a grouper sandwich, crab cakes and some of freshest oysters I've had ever. I also tried the shrimp bisque that was so delicious. Unfortunately, the newly erected sand dune/burm blocks the view to take in a sunset. Don't let that stop you from coming here for a satisfying experience on Captiva Island. read more

Fresh seafood I've tasted, I had the calamari and it was super tender very fresh. The service is different, you stand in line place your order then they calll (if you're sitting outside), and also have inside seating with a waitress or waiter. Just like it was before. And I'm so excited to see you guys are up and running after the hurricane, better than ever just minus the beautiful trees outside.. the beach is alone are totally worth a drive but go early before the traffic sets in. This is always a staple when I visit Captiva. So happy they were able to reopen after the damage they suffered from the hurricane. After a long day on the beach we went in for a few snacks and a drink. We were so hungry we dug right in and forgot to take pictures, but we had a few appetizers. We had the Caesar salad which was very large and tasty. The mozzarella sticks which were just average. The most delicious part was the Captiva sandwich, which was focaccia bread pesto, Swiss cheese, turkey breast, prosciutto, lettuce, and tomato. The kettle chips that were homemade on the side tied it all together. We all had the Sangria which was delicious after sitting in the sun. read more

As i stated from previous time i was here stay away from the crunchy grouper sandwich its no good tasting, overpriced & disappointing instead try a fish of the day Gulf grouper filet though $43 more appealing with green beans and salad, the clam chowder is a must try really good tasting the shrimp tacos though were disappointing small, not many & poor taste. The drink line is full most of the time and you can also order your food directly from the bar, take it outside to eat under an umbrella by the sand dunes. Beautiful sunsets as well. Located next to beach but you can't see the beach due to sand dune. they have indoor seating but you can order your food inside and sit outside on tables. They call your name if you are outside. Very crowded with long lines nice ambience. The food was fair. The restaurant just reopened that week after the hurricane. If you want American food especially for kids - good choice. read more

About a week ago we went to the newly reopened Mucky Duck, an old favorite of ours. We were very disappointed. We go for the view and the for the grouper sandwich. There is no longer a view from outside or inside due to a tall sand burm. The grouper appeared to be a frozen item that was light on fish. The breading was awful. I was starving so i ate a small amount but did not finish it and left the restaurant hungry. Unfortunately there is no reason for us to go back. read more

Solid restaurant on the beach. Popped in here on a Tuesday night, and they weren't too busy (but nowhere on the island seems very busy this time of the year. Service was a little slow- had to wait quite a while on refills on drinks, but the food came out pretty quick. The place feels beachy, and if you are wanting a spot on the island to watch the sunset, this is probably one of the best places to do so. I had the teriyaki flank steak for dinner. The steak was well flavored in a nice marinade, but definitely undercoooked (ordered medium and it was still moo'ing on my plate). I also had some cole slaw not pictured- mayo based and needed doctoring up with some salt and pepper. No comment on the beans (wasn't expecting them to come as they weren't listed as the accompanying side on the menu). Cute place located right on the beach. The perfect scenery to watch the sunset! If you are going to sit outside, you do have to order at the bar for takeout, so we chose to dine inside. I shared the Chicken Piccata with another member of my party. (So attached photo is just half the serving!) The garlic red potatoes were delicious cooked perfectly. The green beans were good as well. As for the chicken piccata, the person I was sharing with and I both thought it had a weird flavor. It was coated in egg, but the egg would separate from the chicken when cutting. I personally thought it had a like movie theater butter flavor to it, strange. Service was good at first, with quick refills, but our server disappear for quite a while when we waited for the bill. Overall, I would return for the scenery, but would choose a different meal option. read more

We had high expectations of this experience. We'd been following them on FaceBook for years and were so excited to eat here and hoped to do more than once. Such a huge disappointment. First, the tables are CRAMMED together. And the server woman (heavy German accent) was terrible--she completely forgot about us, couldn't get refills or anything else we needed. My husband went to the bar for water refills because she sure wasn't coming to us. And the food was not even tasty--We got their crunchy grouper sandwich--over-breaded with what tasted like cornflakes, completely tasteless. If we had actually had a server we could have perhaps requested something to add some flavor, but alas, we were on our own. We tried adding the coleslaw to the sandwich and that gave it something resembling flavor. We wanted to order dessert but by the time we were through with our half-eaten awful meal, we just wanted to leave. The tables around us were yelling at each other to be heard over the over-crowded restaurant, the view is of a sand dune (no fault of the restaurant here). They have rebuilt and are finally open. Their alcohol supplier is very good but they need help with the food sources. The cod looked like three long pieces of a fish stick and the chicken looked like fried thin fish. The salads were fresh and tasty. Parking still a major challenge. If you do find a spot, as soon as you are finished eating, you will have to move your car. Be prepared to do a 12 point parking job to get out of the lot filled with big trucks or expensive sport cars. read more

Love the island, restaurant location history and ambiance. When I visit an island, on a beach, I really hope to get fresh seafood. Sadly, that's a rarity at MD. I hate it because so many places on serene islands like Captiva, know you have very few choices and stock generic, frozen everything. The ratings tell you everything, 3 1/2 or lower. Because the drinks are good is the reason they get 3 stars, not the food. They need to wise up, raise prices and get FRESH! I have 6 more nights and I'll gladly spend the money on tolls and gas for good fresh seafood which is within 45 minutes. No more miniature breaded shrimp or frozen French fries, I'll find better. read more

This was a great stop right on the beach! We came for sunset, but unfortunately, the night we were there the sunset was clouded. We were lucky enough to snag a window table. Our server was nice, but not too personable or welcoming.. we started with water and a few drinks. we ordered the spinach salad to share, which was such a highlight. we also ordered the shrimp and grouper scampi pasta(nightly special), as well as the shrimp sampler platter. Everything was pretty good other than some of the shrimp were ice cold and the grouper in the pasta was very fishy. Overall, it was a nice meal. read more

The Mucky Duck is located on Captiva Island, directly on the beach. This is a place we have visited year after year. We really enjoy it! It has been a few years since I have left a review but felt it was time. They were closed for some time due to the hurricane, but they are open again and just as good as we remember. This location can get very busy, especially in the evening because of their views of the beach and sunset. We always come for lunch since it is less crowded. Their is pretty much the same, there are a few additional items at dinner which are also more expensive. The restaurant itself is not very large, there are only a few tables. Don't ask for a window, if they can't accommodate you and they ask, they bring you a mobile window and set it at the table. They make a big deal out of it and its funny but sort of embarrassing as well. They also have very few big tables. My only issue with this location is the staff and the service. It has always been fantastic, but ever since the hurricane, it seems to have gone down. This last time, we had 5. They tried to seat us at a very small table and add a chair. There would have virtually no room, so we had to ask. We were given a larger table reluctantly. This was my only issue; the hostess was not the friendliest. She moved us but I could tell she was annoyed. Our server was also very forgetful and just not accommodating. My dad ordered a crab cake sandwich with no onions. It came with onions on the lettuce and tomato. Instead of offering to get him a new one, he tried to explain to us for almost 5 minutes why the toppings came with onions. We didn't even understand what he was trying to explain. I finally stepped in and just asked, can you get him a new one. He did but it still had the onions. I honestly did not understand why this was so difficult, but the server was not helpful in it. If that had been an allergy, this would have been a bigger issue, but it was still not needed. He also forgot everything we asked for, more water, forgot, a to go box, he forgot. It was just really bad. My sister asked for cottage cheese instead of fries, he told her they don't have that. (It was on the menu and the table next to us had it) I honestly was confused with him. The service was our only issue. The food is great. I always order the seafood plate. This comes with fried shrimp, clam strips, steamed shrimp, a piece of fish and a BBQ bacon wrapped shrimp. It also comes with fries and coleslaw. It is so good and a great variety of items. Someone in our family always ordered the crunchy grouper sandwich. It is one of the more popular items and always great. You can add cheese to it if you want. This last time, my mom ordered their salad which she added blackened shrimp. This portion was large, but the shrimp were spicy for her. As I said, my dad ordered the crab cake. He enjoyed it, the actual crab cake. My husband usually chooses one of their specials. This year it was an angel hair pasta with loads of seafood and a tomato broth for the sauce. He loves it and is not even a huge pasta fan. All in all this is a great restaurant, it is one we visit year after year. The views are fantastic, they have seating outside and many times live music. I love their food here. This last time, the service was a little on the negative side but it would not detract us from coming and enjoying this restaurant year after year. Today my family and I went to the Mucky Duck for lunch. All of us have been coming of years because of the quality of the food, and the view of the Gulf. When we arrived we were seat almost immediately. All of us knew what we were going to order. When our serve came and greeted us, it was go time. *I ordered the Chef Pasta( Angel Hair tossed with olive oil, basil, garlic, scallions, white wine, tomato, lobster and shrimp) It was one of the specials offered. The angel hair was perfectly cooked, the shrimp and lobster was tender and fresh, the sauce had loads of flavor. Just wonderfully prepared. For drinks I got a pint of an IPA, from Last Laugh. It was a delicious IPA and it so happened to pare well with my dish.*My wife ordered the Seafood Platter(Clam Strips, steamed shrimp, BBQ shrimp, Fried Cod, Fried Cod, with French fries and coleslaw) She loves this patter and has been a go to dish for a while. Nothing too oily, everything is well seasoned* My sister-in-law ordered the Crunchy Grouper Sandwich( served with French fries and coleslaw)She said it had a nice crunch, fish itself was tender, fries were perfect*My mother-in-law ordered a Caesar Salad with seared shrimp added to it. This was perfect for her because she wanted to eat light. The shrimp was nicely seared and fresh. Altogether the salad was well prepared * My father-in-law ordered the Maryland style Crab Cake sandwich ( served with French fries and coleslaw) He seemed to love the sandwich a lot. So I've been hearing about this place from my husband and his family. They use to come here decades ago when he was a kid. This place has been a Captiva staple. I was excited to come here and I'm glad I did. They don't take reservations so that means that you will have to wait. We got lucky because the weekend weather sucked so there wasn't a long wait for a table. We probably waited like 5-10mins. As soon as you come in you see a large old school bar. They had a lot of fun sayings around it so it was cute. The place was packed, the restaurant and bar big not the outside sitting because of the weather. We were sat right I front of the windows which was great, we could see the ocean. The service was good. We got our food pretty fast. Let's talk about the food. I thought it would be just an American seafood place so I was happy. When we get there and I see the sign it says "English Pub"... my heart sank. The English are not known for their incredibly delicious cuisine. The inside did have an English pub feel, there was a lot of dark wood around and they have their own special lager (called the Mucky Duck Red Lager). I ordered the clam chowder soup and it was good. For the main dish I ordered the Pan Seared Snapper and it was very good. It had spinach, sun dried tomatoes, green beans on the side, and I got them with fries. EVERYTHING in my plate was tasty! The fries were super crispy and delicious even though I didn't taste any salt. We had a very good time here and we enjoyed making memories. The food was good. I feel like this is more of a dinner place than lunch. I recommend this place. read more

This is one of my favorite places to visit when I'm on the west coast of Florida! The view you get if you sit outside either at a table (which all have umbrellas), a picnic table, or on the plastic chairs facing the water, is absolutely amazing! You can also sit inside. Service is fast too! Parking can be tough, but we are always lucky enough to snag a spot. If you sit along the plastic chairs facing the water, you have to order food or drinks, But you should be anyway because it's delish and the beer is ice cold! They don't have liquor but they have beer and wine / wine cocktails. You won't be disappointed! read more

It's been around for as long as I remember. On Captiva island close to the end of the road. It survived Ian which was a major feat in itself. Sandy beach tables for those that want to self serve at the bar are directly on the beach. Next are the typical florida beach tables with bench's and an umbrella. Lastly inside ac dining when you need to cool off. Service was a bit bellow ok for me. We were outside so I decided to get our first cocktails from inside while we waited. Short on staff I am sure was the reason for our slow service. The grouper sandwich was the best I had. The grouper covered the bun and then hung off the entire bun. Yummy. I will be back. We stopped by for a lunch at the monkey duck this afternoon. The location is beautiful, the food is average. We sat outside at a table, overlooking palm trees, and the beach in the ocean. What a sight! We started with decent onion, rings, and then we had a grouper sandwich, and Seafood fried platter. The grouper was good but not great, just good fish. The seafood platter was uneven. One barbecue shrimp was fantastic, the fried fish stick made of cod was undercooked with some of the cod still raw. The fried clam strips were OK. The meal was an uneven. The service was really good.
