The worst part for me was the black mold all over the bathroom walls. I even found a live roach which I was accused of bring because they said "we don't have roaches". Interesting since the entire inn was full. Then i was told it was a grasshopper. I attached a photo, don't worry. So you can decide. Lastly, we can't eat in the room. So we went downstairs to eat in the dining room. Tessa said no you can't eat here. Go outside. So we ate outside like dogs. Don't stay here

We booked the Little Room which is actually next to the main house. They told us up front that cell phone reception was spotty, and they were right, but they do offer wi-fi. Our room felt a little musty at first but we turned on the AC until nighttime when the air was quite cool and comfortable. We enjoyed our relaxing stay and sat on our porch during some summer storms. In the evening, we had some complimentary tea and brownies and rocked in the chairs outside the main house. One evening we even heard bagpipes playing (must have been practicing for the Highland Games). Breakfast was delicious both days. There are no TVs in the rooms, which was fine with us. Even though the inn is on a remote country road, we were still surprised to hear cars and trucks go by throughout the night.

We were originally supposed to stay in the Azalea room, but moved to the White Crow suite to have some extra space. I was able to see the Azalea room and took some pictures of it for reference. The white crow suite is upstairs in the main house and is a large room with a big bathroom and massive walk in closet. There is a small table and 2 chairs in the room and that was very nice for us to have a place to work for one of the days during our stay. The fireplace was also really nice to have as well. The breakfast each morning was very good and I enjoyed being able to easily walk downstairs for some coffee/tea in the mornings. There is a refrigerator in the room and that was nice for us to be able to have morning mimosas. Out back there is a seating area and a small fire pit. It was nice to sit out there when the weather was warm enough during the day. The location of the B&B can't be beat. Everything in Banner Elk is within walking distance of the B&B. It was also nice that they give you a coupon for a free glass or flight of wine at the Banner Elk Winery. I would definitely stay here again if I were visiting the area.

With that, my stay at The Perry House Bed and Breakfast shoots to the top of my list of memories! Make some tea--this will be long! I've never stayed at a BnB before. My daughter and I do an annual daddy/daughter trip and we tried this area before in a cabin rental. Fun, for sure but the Perry House took things to a different level. The moment you walk in, you're greeted by Robin and Mike and they're just so darn nice, I want them to be my North Carolina parents! Robin gave us the lay of the land and our rooms and it was time to settle in for 4 nights. The rooms are cozy and comfy with each having their own bathroom. The house itself is gorgeous, especially at Christmastime. There's a TV in the living room, kitchen in the back, and snacks around. You can explore the highlands, or just sit in your PJs watching TV or reading. Breakfast was served daily and did not disappoint! Sitting around family style with others was fantastic. Which, that is another fun aspect of a real BnB--we met 3 or 4 different couples and they were all the warmest people. Sharing stories, sharing our lives, sharing things to do--this is the real deal. I mentioned to my mom that this, at least the entrance, reminded me of Newhart, if you're old enough to remember. Our capstone was celebrating New Years 2023 with Robin, Mike, and the guests! It'll definitely be one for the memory book! The Perry House is mountain hospitality, Americana, beauty, and history all rolled into one. If you're visiting Banner Elk, you owe it to yourself to stay at least a night and make memories!

Randy has a lovely garden where you will find him quite often tending his flowers (some edible that are served with breakfast) and vegetables. The first time we arrived Randy directed us down to the creek, that runs past the property, to cool off. Nancy is the most delightful breakfast cook and host! She greets each guest with her warm smile and lovely lilting voice. She is such a positive presence and always ready with suggestions of things to do around the area. Our favorite is Nancy's favorite hike, which she has done countless times. I am in awe because it is challenging. We are going to make it to the Meadow this time! Just ask. The rooms are so charming and comfortable and we marveled the fact that we could sleep peacefully with the windows open in July! Close by is our favorite renowned restaurant "Knife and Fork" (you will not get a better meal anywhere, ever!) and of course, Penland School of Crafts. So hike, bike, eat, sleep well, and be happy!

Both rooms were very comfortable, well furnished, very clean and quiet. The innkeeper, Bobbie, is so gracious and prepares the most delicious breakfast every morning. The grounds are immaculately kept and you can fish in the Elk River right in the back yard. The Inn is only a few minutes from downtown Banner Elk and Bobbie can recommend all the best places to dine, shop or visit. It's a memorable place to stay.

And, it's become clear that they have given up on the hotel side of the business. During my last visit this summer 2019, my room was just awful. It faced the back door of the kitchen with all the associated noises and odors. There was a vibration coming from below which shook the entire room. There was no internet service and the TV used some weird cable subscription service which would come in and out. I called the manager and asked him to fix all of the above. He said "Internet has been in and out all week". And, " I thought I had this TV connected in this room." And "I don't know what that vibration is downstairs, it might stop later". I asked for a different room, (there were only two other cars in the parking lot besides mine, so, there were other rooms available), manager's answer was no. The room was already paid for, so I had no options. In the future I will choose one of the many vacation rentals (vrbo) available in the area. I would not recommend this hotel to my friends and family. Now that I have your attention. I'm going to speak to those of you who have a sports car like me. You are going to love the drive to this little town. North Carolina highways 181 and 221 through the Pisgah Forest is reminiscent of drive through the Alps in your 1964 Ferrari Daytona. The road is smooth and well maintained. So, put the top down on your Corvette, your Porsche, your M Class or your Mini and enjoy the drive.

The next year we had problems with so many things including no running water for the entire time we were in one of the cabins, problems with the kitchen appliances and other things. What we realized was they were not maintaining the property and things were not getting maintained or repaired. In addition, they substantially raided their prices. As much as we liked the setting, we decided to find another place for our annual event.

We held our wedding here and our guests occupied all five cabins that Steve and Joy Powell have listed. The cabins themselves are gorgeous, every one we visited was grander than the next. They are furnished well, have plenty of supplies for cooking and cleaning (to make your stay mostly worry-free!) and the beds were actually really comfortable! I cannot say enough good things about Steve and how he accommodated every request we had to make the wedding venue absolutely perfect and ensure our guests had a wonderful stay. For the price per cabin, you really cannot find a better deal. Memory Mountain at Wolf Laurel is quiet, serene, and simply breath-taking. Now, with all of this being said, a word to the wise: this is a very do-it-yourself vacation or venue. If you're not willing to set up your space (i.e. bringing your own food to cook; moving indoor and/or outdoor furniture to create the perfect event space) then this place is not for you! If you have a vision, help from others staying on site, and time, then do yourself a huge favor and BOOK. You won't regret it. I only wish we could have spent more time here - three nights simply wasn't enough to enjoy everything (hiking, fishing, swimming, etc) that this amazing place has to offer! Thank you Steve and Joy!
