But everything else was a solid 3. Nothing wrong with it at all... But, I was underwhelmed based on my previous experiences. When we checked in, the host was fine. The room was fine. The bathroom did leave some things to be desired. There was not a good place to put your toiletries. We also had to climb into a very deep bathtub to get to the shower... If you are clumsy, like me, you may walk away with a couple of bruises. The house itself was very pretty, and was decorated in a manner appropriate for the property. I would've liked to seen some warm blanket to sit out on the patio with, board games, or puzzles to pass the time. There was only one sofa, and it was not in a cozy little nook where you would want to hang out. The food was fine. The menu is heavy on carbs and sweet breakfast treats. They were executed well enough. But there was not any particular breakfast that knocked my socks off. Again it was fine. The location was very convenient to downtown Asheville. It would be a two minute drive or a 10 minute walk to downtown Asheville. This bed-and-breakfast did not appear to be owned and operated by the hosts, rather an absentee corporation or business. I think that made the difference. Everything was fine, but it didn't have that touch of home that you expect when you stay at a bed and breakfast. For example, when we wanted to use the television, and needed some assistance, when we called the number that was left, the call was blocked. On a whim , we texted Fortunately, they responded right away. But ultimately, after 6 PM you are on your own in terms of staffing. Overall, I can recommend Beaufort House, but I think next time I will try something different.

However, I was expecting this to be a special and elegant experience and it was not. When we arrived during the specific check in time the door was locked and no one was in the front office. It turns out they were showing someone else to their room but we didn't know that. We just stood out on the porch not knowing what to do until someone finally came to the door. There's no reason they couldn't have the front door unlocked during the limited window of check in time. The person who showed us around said there would be "heavy continental breakfast ". However, it turned out the breakfast was probably the very absolute minimum they could provide and still call it breakfast. It was very disappointing. If I'm not mistaken it was only available from 8:30 until 9:30 or something very limited like that. Finally, there was no lotion in our bathroom, only shampoo, conditioner, and hand soap. I would stay there again but I would have to weigh the options of amenities and prices of other hotels. A regular mid price hotel has more amenities than what was offered when we stayed.

Here are a few of my chief complaints: 1) There was no one to check me in when I arrived late after a long flight from California. After standing in the empty front room for a while, I saw a small sign saying to call a number to check in. I called twice before an insolent teen in sweatpants finally showed up to give me my key. 2) The inn adds a daily "tip" for room cleaning on top of an already high bill. (This is one of the more splurgey places to stay in the Black Mountain area.) If that wasn't rude enough, no one ever came by during my three-night stay to clean/tidy the room. The toilet bowl had dirt marks all over it when I showed up and there they stayed for the duration of my visit. No one made the bed. 3) Internet did not work. 4) Breakfast begins late -- at 8.30am -- because the chef has to take his five children to school. Seriously. So if you're staying there for work, as I was, you have to get breakfast elsewhere. That being said, after a lengthy argument with aforementioned insolent teen, the chef prepped me some breakfast items before he left for the night and left them in the fridge. That was very sweet of him.

The decor is simple and vintage. The cottage hasn't been updated much and smells a bit musky, so beware if you have allergies. The weather was unseasonably warm for September, but the nights were chilly in the 50s. We slept with the windows open and we could hear the South Toe River to the left of the cottage. So peaceful. Sweet wildflowers all around and the gardens were gorgeous. The breakfast was also a hit! Be sure to sign the book each night if you want breakfast. I made the mistake of forgetting to sign up one night and we were out of luck for breakfast. They make the granola from scratch and they bake the bread. We hope to return for a fishing trip.

At first, I thought it would be like other B&Bs we've stayed at in times past: a Victorian house with many guests, packaged snacks and a packaged breakfast from a microwave. I. Was. Wrong. The owners, Patricia and Ralph, greeted us upon arrival ready to take our bags from the car. (We packed light, so there was no need). We were given an in-depth tour of the house along with the histor; it is an incredible story. The B&B is very spacious and cozy throughout the house. There is plenty of room for you to relax, stretch out, read a book in solitude or lounge. We stayed in the Hickory room which was very clean and comfortable. Sweet Tea B&B has a well stocked pantry if you have a craving for something. To end the visit, Ralph made homemade eclairs, blueberry muffins and French toast (bread was homemade too). This is as traditional as a B&B gets. Patricia and Ralph are incredible hosts. They take hosting to an unbeatable level with impeccable detail to every part of your stay. They keep the grounds in top condition so you can enjoy your stay in comfort. If you're traveling to/thru Catawba, try and get a night at Sweet Tea B&B
