We have enjoyed several great stays at the Celo Inn in the past few years. The Cottage became our…read morecovid getaway for social distancing and visiting family. Nestled in a valley next to a small river in western North Carolina, it is close to the Blue Ridge Parkway, Mt. Mitchell and the workshops of local craftspeople, with plenty of hiking and nearby waterfalls. Warm and inviting, the new Innkeepers have done a welcome refresh with new linens & amenities along with a delicious new breakfast menu. This is a special quiet place - no televisions or phones - for reflection and relaxation. We highly recommend it for travelers looking for less clutter and distraction.

The decor is simple and vintage. The cottage hasn't been updated much and smells a bit musky, so beware if you have allergies. The weather was unseasonably warm for September, but the nights were chilly in the 50s. We slept with the windows open and we could hear the South Toe River to the left of the cottage. So peaceful. Sweet wildflowers all around and the gardens were gorgeous. The breakfast was also a hit! Be sure to sign the book each night if you want breakfast. I made the mistake of forgetting to sign up one night and we were out of luck for breakfast. They make the granola from scratch and they bake the bread. We hope to return for a fishing trip.

I really enjoyed my recent stay at Gable Haus in Helen's Haven cabin. Diane and Mike are wonderful…read morehosts! The cottage was rustic, comfy, and cozy with everything I could need. The kitchen is quaint, but well equipped if you like to do your own cooking. They thoughtfully provided coffee, tea, sweeteners, almond milk, yummy muffins, and chips to tide me over. The king bed is very comfortable, plenty of blankets and heaters to keep it warm. The bathroom has lots of towels and was well supplied too. The house is located in a quiet neighborhood. It was lovely to walk along the road to the nearby stream, enjoying the autumn foliage. There is a great country store just up the block with crafts, a bar, a cafe, and live music on the weekends- a fun, family friendly place to sit outside without having to drive! I also enjoyed visiting nearby Grandfather Mountain, the Linville Falls Winery, and Mountain Grounds Coffee shop. The Biltmore Estate (a two hour drive away) was also a worthwhile day trip.

Breakfast every morning was delicious and fresh. We stayed in the Cherokee Rose room, which is in the main house. It was impeccably decorated and comfortable. There were drinks and snacks provided in the room. The only downfall is that we both like to sleep in and it's right outside the communal breakfast spot. Although, thanks to that we woke up every morning on time to eat the yummy food and get our day started. Also, due to the age of the place the water was brown in the tub, so we were unable to use it. Regardless of these few things, we'll be back and it's definitely worth 5 stars!

I can't begin to list all the unfortunate things about this place…read more The owner/manager is a not-yet-acclimated fellow from the Middle East --not that there's anything inherently wrong with that-- and apparently not an especially bright man either. His English is poor; made doubly difficult by his recalcitrance. When I first called to make a reservation, I gave him the usual info, and then he said: "But I need "a Jeep." WTF? "Why do you need a Jeep?" After 3 mins of confusion, it turns out he was trying to saying "Zip" as in "Zip Code!" Not to rave forever, but this fellow was gifted in his obnoxiousness. He absolutely doesn't listen, he's not a "people person" and he's instantly argumentative. Not a good look for somebody in the hospitality business. (On the three occasions I spoke with him --and was constantly interrupted-- at the end of each I thought: "OK, you win for now. You've had YOUR say. I'll have mine in the clear, objective atmosphere of TripAdvisor.") I have to note that several reviews compliment that the "Owners are nice people." Must be the wife they dealt with. In the future he may want to let the wife speak until he can afford a charisma transplant. No one was there when I arrived in the middle of the day and the Construction crew had to give me my key. The rooms are recently renovated but nevertheless trashy and malfunctioning. e.g: Hot water took 22 min to begin in my first room, and it didn't work in second room. (I got a new room cause the walls are paper thin and the constantly barking dog in next room was unacceptable.) THE PLACE REEKED OF "Fabuloso" !!! The stench still lingered when I got home 3 days later and I had to wash air out all of my bags, laundry and everything. If you have the inclination, go to Google Reviews for photos, more details, etc. I cannot recommend that you stay here.
