The Highlands at Sugar is dated but comfortable in a "Welcome to 1978"- sort of way. Simulated wooden beams hang from the ceiling, dark woodwork and paneling and Realistic stereo speakers complete the effect. Not sure if this is a ski lodge or some other sort of resort property but the views are stunning -on Memorial Day weekend- and the rates are modest. We were in the top half of a building, with a little private balcony and tall ceilings. The furniture has seen better days and is showing its age but it is clean and well cared for. Flooring and window treatments need replaced throughout, not broken yet but it's gonna happen sooner rather than later. Property comes with an equipped kitchen: fridge, electric range, table ware, flatware, and an assortment of mid-tier small appliances, pans and pots. If you have a favorite skillet bring it! the best way to ruin breakfast is trying to make eggs over easy in someone else's pans. Driving in the hills gets less "exciting" with each successful trip but unless you're from here you'll still want to use your descent gears most of the time. When you start to feel overwhelmed pull off the highway and let traffic pass. Also, it's a good idea to turn off the GPS and just use the map part of your navigation software until you get to level ground. Lots of nice drives with pretty scenery for touristing so please be considerate and get off of the road to take pictures of the plants, critters, and locals.

Nice place with alot of room (if you get the 2 bedroom). The 2 bedroom unit has a bedroom downstairs (king bed) and a couch in the living room that pulls out to a bed. Upstair in the loft area, there is another couch that pulls out to a bed. And another bedroom (king bed) upstairs. There is a bathroom downstairs with a bathtub, and another bathroom upstairs with a shower and a jacuzzi tub. Full kitchen and a fireplace round out the amenities. The office has a ping-pong table, pool table and a free "80's" arcade machine, and an indoor pool and hot tub. Excellent views of Beech Mountain. Free doughnuts in the office on Sunday mornings.

Our unit has been recently renovated in the kitchen and bathrooms. Absolutely stunning view from our balcony. Basic kitchen accommodations & utensils. Fans were available in the closets. We really enjoyed our stay.

    Beautiful sunset from our balcony

The cabin had every amenity we could of asked for (OK...a hot tub on the deck would have been nice) and we felt so comfortable from the minute we got there. The living room fireplace was amazing and we had it on constantly. The living room was comfortable and large. The kitchen was a bit small for both of us to work in but it was more than adequate. Both bedrooms were lovely (the king sized bed was super comfortable) and there were plenty of bathrooms to pick from. The sheets and towels were plentiful and plush and it was nice to be able to do laundry. The driveway up to the house was something. Super steep and it made the returns from our walks a bit challenging. And we were glad that it didn't snow to have to tackle it in the ice. The internet was great for keeping up with work but it wasn't sufficient to be able to stream movies or television. But the choices on the satellite TV made up for it. We loved The Getaway and will definiteley be back!

Most people think to go to the beaches in the summer, and I would have agreed prior to this trip, but now I'm a summer mountain convert! :) First of all, the house is so roomy and cozy for a big family...we were able to fit all 10 of us without any problem. Yes, the house is a bit of a trek to get to, (it is on TOP of a mountain afterall!) but once you are there, it is heavenly. The summer breeze was a perfect escape from the humidity that usually is the norm, and the stars at night were so unbelievable. We spent the days taking long walks, reading/napping in the hammock, doing yoga on the deck, and the kids were playing soccer in the yard. The nights were spent on the porch in rocking chairs with wine, laughter, and a wonderful hot tub to soak away the day. The owners were great to deal with and I would recommend this place to anyone. It's definitely the perfect place to relax and unwind if that's the kind of vacation you are looking for! Now, that being said I know there are a ton of things to do nearby from ziplining, hiking to even mining for gold but again, we didn't really want to leave once we got up to the house. Did I mention the views...GORGEOUS! Can't wait to go back this summer! And, I'm not a huge snow/ski person but I imagine its a true winter wonderland in the colder months.

We called their maintenance service phone number about 9:30 pm and the person answering the phone screamed at me and told she was in bed asleep and to deal with it the next morning . So we tried to stream on our phone to look at weather and news and could not due to the fact that the internet was dial up and not really operable. So day 2 still no TV service , we were working with them until 11 pm because nothing was really done during the work day but still no tv. Day three we finally got someone capable of fixing the tv and got some tv service but we could not get local channels ever in our three week stay the second bed room did not have cable to it so no TV for that room , the kitchen had broken glasses and bowls and knives But brand new pots and some new dishes I had to go get a real knife to use for cooking. They were not interested in making it right . They just said sorry that you had an issue . Here is a partial list of what was wrong with the condo No Tv for first 3days Coffee maker has melted basket Kerig. Needs cleaned and new filter Will not always run Lights in bathroom were burnt out they did replace those eventually Light in living room does not work Peeling wall paper in bathroom Water damaged cabinets No cable in guest bedroom No local channels avalible on main tv once we finally got it to work Internet is dial up cannot stream or use my computer Fan does not work. Only one rusty flimsy chair on balcony Top cover missing from dining room chair Fireplace wall has cracked mirror Knives were broken and unusable Broken salad bowls and glasses In addition to a run down condo Peeling wallpaper old decor and rock hard uncomfortable beds and a fiasco and a half getting into the building as it was under construction and there was no access to the building except through the service entrance and you had to go and down stairs with nonstandard depth and height and no railing to use handicapped access was blocked off physically To be fair Sugar Top has many beautiful well maintained units that are available to rent Mine was not and the rental company could care less they already had my money and I needed a place to stay I would say stay at Sugar Top but don't use sugar Mountain Lodging

With all these, I would not have said anything if the people from Sugar Mountain lodging wouldn't have been so awful with me. Awful ! They constantly tried to steal money from me. At the beginning, when I talked on the phone with them, they gave me a higher quote for my stay, that i found online. When I mentioned that, they accepted the amount I was quoted online. But they were not happy about that. Then, at the end, they charged me an additional night that I did not stay, just because I checked out a couple hours late. I have a three year old that was not feeling good that morning and a lot of luggage... One would think that they could be understanding, especially because I was understanding with the condition I found the condo in, but no... They charged my card and said they were nice because they were trying to convince me, after I was all packed, on my way, driving.. to stay another night... They told me that I can pay an extra night because it is not that much and the lady is old, in her 90s.... So not professional !!! I don't know how these people are still in business...! They harassed me with calls and text messages, they even went so far to tell me that I shouldn't have gone in vacation for "recreational skiing" with a 3 yo during a pandemic... What do they care about my choices ? OMG, it was like I was in a Jerry Springer show... They were very nasty, insulting, very unprofessional, horrible, horrible people..... Will NEVER EVER go there again !!!

Absolutely terrible customer service. Would strongly recommend against…read more I have been coming to Sugar Mountain almost yearly for over a decade, and decided that I would upgrade accommodations since I am now financially better off. They were quick to respond to my request for properties that were within my price range, and I selected a property that met the needs of my group. They were quick to accept my reservation for a week at the property with four days of ski rentals and lift tickets. A few weeks later, they called requesting payment, and we payed. This was just over three weeks from our arrival date, and where the trouble began. The day after we made full payment, almost $2200, I received a phone call saying they had made a mistake with the discounting and that I needed to pay an additional $391 for the stay. When I mentioned that the quote that they emailed me, and the discussions since, were to the contrary, they told me it did not matter. I told them that I was not going to pay more than I originally agreed to, and that they needed to find a solution. I told her that I understand that human errors happen, but that I wasn't willing to pay more for their mistake. The young lady that was helping me offered to send me some other properties to consider while she worked with her manager, to which I agreed. I looked over her email, found two properties I liked and forwarded them to my friends that were accompanying me on the trip to check out. A couple of hours later, the rental office sent me an email stating that they had felt the best thing to do was refund my money, as the issue was a "human error", using my phrasing to try to avoid owning up to their mistake. I immediately called, frustrated, and talked to the young lady who told me she would team with her manager, Jack, and call me back. When Jack called me a few hours later, he was very defensive and only presented the same options that the email I had received earlier did. These options were additionally discounted, marginally, but they were still at the same price or higher that what I had already paid for, and I expressed to him my dissatisfaction. I didn't want additional discounts. I wanted what I had booked, what they had promised. As I was speaking, not yelling or cursing, Jack interrupted me and told me that he is sorry that they were unable to take care of me and to enjoy my stay somewhere else. He then hung up abruptly. I have since booked with another rental option in Banner Elk. The process with them has been good so far, and I have never had a bad experience up here until this. I will also be reaching out to the Better Business Bureau concerning what essentially amounts to a bait and switch, as well as the owners of the rental property to inform them of the experience that I have received.
