It's a nice unit 4605 feet elevation with a beautiful view off the balcony. 103A is a two level unit with the master upstairs with a huge bathroom and loft area with a pull out couch. There's a fireplace too but we didn't use it, washer and dryer, and no air conditioning, but we didn't need it. King size beds in both bedrooms. Little things like a balcony door not locking, bedroom door misaligned so it didn't close properly, remote control inoperable due to not the same as tv, and coil style stove caused deduction of one star. Pool, jacuzzi, sauna, and exercise room, along with game room with pool table, ping pong table, Foosball table, and two gaming tvs on site as well. read more

We enjoyed our stay. We did stay in one of the refurbished buildings so there was no Jacuzzi in our unit. However, we did enjoy the heated pool in the game building one evening. It did need to be cleaned but we swam anyway. The main comwas there were little bugs in the water. But we pushed them away and enjoyed it. The room was clean, and we felt safe. The drive up to the resort is twisting and curving and a bit unnerving.. however!! What else do you expect in the mountains!!?? We enjoyed our weekend and even lit a fire in the fireplace twice!! We had a lovely time and were thrilled to wake up to see Grandfather Mountain right out our living room!! We enjoyed our stay. read more

Do not trust in this company. They canceled my reservation 5 days before my trip in the peak season during Christmas. I made the reservation 4 months in advance directly in their website for "guarantee and peace of mind" as they stand. Nothing is true. I had to immediately start to look for another reservation and the only less expensive option I found it was in Beech Mountain and had to pay triple what I supposed to pay. After reserve in that new place with no cancelation option unless with a Fee, someone from Highlands at Sugar sent me an email that my reservation was restore and sorry for the inconvenience. No one makes responsible for the other reservation I have to do. I sent emails and made calls to try to recover the cancellation fee I had to pay and no one answer back. No more reservations Highlands at Sugar from my side in the future. Be careful!!! read more

Just OK We stayed a week with friends sharing several units. The setting is nice with a good view. The rooms, however, are very dated and in somewhat rough condition. The teflon frying pan was very scratched which releases particles into the food--unhealthy. The floor in front of the downstairs bathroom was very spongy. Some of the upstairs window cranks were stripped. They really need to do a thorough renovation. I wouldn't choose to stay there again. read more

The Highlands at Sugar is dated but comfortable in a "Welcome to 1978"- sort of way. Simulated wooden beams hang from the ceiling, dark woodwork and paneling and Realistic stereo speakers complete the effect. Not sure if this is a ski lodge or some other sort of resort property but the views are stunning -on Memorial Day weekend- and the rates are modest. We were in the top half of a building, with a little private balcony and tall ceilings. The furniture has seen better days and is showing its age but it is clean and well cared for. Flooring and window treatments need replaced throughout, not broken yet but it's gonna happen sooner rather than later. Property comes with an equipped kitchen: fridge, electric range, table ware, flatware, and an assortment of mid-tier small appliances, pans and pots. If you have a favorite skillet bring it! the best way to ruin breakfast is trying to make eggs over easy in someone else's pans. Driving in the hills gets less "exciting" with each successful trip but unless you're from here you'll still want to use your descent gears most of the time. When you start to feel overwhelmed pull off the highway and let traffic pass. Also, it's a good idea to turn off the GPS and just use the map part of your navigation software until you get to level ground. Lots of nice drives with pretty scenery for touristing so please be considerate and get off of the road to take pictures of the plants, critters, and locals. read more

Nice place with alot of room (if you get the 2 bedroom). The 2 bedroom unit has a bedroom downstairs (king bed) and a couch in the living room that pulls out to a bed. Upstair in the loft area, there is another couch that pulls out to a bed. And another bedroom (king bed) upstairs. There is a bathroom downstairs with a bathtub, and another bathroom upstairs with a shower and a jacuzzi tub. Full kitchen and a fireplace round out the amenities. The office has a ping-pong table, pool table and a free "80's" arcade machine, and an indoor pool and hot tub. Excellent views of Beech Mountain. Free doughnuts in the office on Sunday mornings. read more

While the view was stunning, I can't give more than 2 stars. The mattress was old and it was SO uncomfortable. The linens were also cheap and scratchy. I could live with one or the other, but the combination made a good night's sleep near impossible. I understand they are upgrading, so maybe if you just avoid this particular unit, 105, you will have a more relaxing stay than we did. read more

I have been coming here for almost 30 years and it is my home away from home. They are making many renovations to update the rooms. The staff goes above and beyond to make sure the guests are happy. It may not be the fanciest place you can stay, but it is cozy, clean, and friendly. They have an indoor heated pool, fitness center, and game room. The 2 bedroom units have a full kitchen, laundry, and a working fireplace as well as a loft with a sleeper sofa in addition to the 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. The view is breathtaking. Less than 5 minutes to the ski slopes on Sugar Mountain. For the price, you can't find a better place to stay in the Banner Elk area. read more

One star is for the view.. the apartment itself was old .. walking to the entrance the hallway walls were scuffed and the carpet filthy.. entering the apartment itself the place looked dark and worn .. carpeting needs replacing as does the sofa.. very uncomfortable The shower was not clean .. hairs from previous guests still there .. glass on shower full of water spots .. all tiled floors were cracked and sticky .. broken tile on fireplace.. walls need painting .. bedding looks old and bed looks very uninviting Tv in bedroom is an old tube set .. come on a new tv costs around $200.!!!! Me and my family vacationed here back in April from the 5th to the 8th and we definitely did NOT want to leave. They had a late check in safe box with our keys and apartment information since we arrived at 4am. The apartment was kind of hard to find but once we located it, we were definitely amazed. There was a hot tub in the bathroom, the view was wonderful, the speakers throughout the apartment lifted our spirits and had us shaking a tail feather our whole stay. Then to put the icing on EVERYTHING, the staff was nothing short of helpful, considerate, and reliable. I actually feel bad that it took me so long to do a review but the trip will ALWAYS be a memory not worth forgetting. THANK YOU STAFF AT SUGAR MOUNTAIN!!!!! Y'all are awesome. read more

We are staying at the Highlands at Sugar this week (the last week in August). We have a two-bedroom unit in the 101 block. We have been very pleased with everything. I was hesitant when I booked the unit sight unseen, especially since it said it didn't have air conditioning. Well, let me tell you, you don't need it! This probably should be the hottest time of year (August), yet even in the middle of the day it's cool here -- around 70 degrees. The unit has two balconies, and we have been sitting out there enjoying the FABULOUS view of the mountain across the way and the town below us. The unit has obviously been remodeled at some point. While the view of the condos from the parking lot is nothing special, the inside is spacious and comfortable. It looks a bit like a hunting lodge, with lots of wood, high ceilings with wooden beams, and snow shoes hung over the fireplace. We are not skiers, but I can see how this place would be great for people skiing on Sugar Mountain. Even in the summer, it's close to all the things to do in this part of NC -- whitewater rafting, hiking, waterfalls, etc. Our unit has one bedroom upstairs and one downstairs, both with their own bathrooms. There are also sleeping sofas -- one up and one down. The master bath has a hot tub big enough for two large people, or three small ones. The kitchen has all the stuff we need to cook meals, and the unit has a fairly good sized dining area. A large screen TV and wood-burning fireplace round out the living room. We wish we had brought some wood with us, as it is pricey in town. Even in August, at night it is cool enough to have a fire! The resort also has great (and fast and dependable, for a place like this) Wi-Fi that is included. The resort has a small indoor pool, a game room and sauna. The staff are friendly and helpful, and responsive to our requests. When we first arrived, we had a window blind that wouldn't open. Because of it, our view was not what it could have been. I called the office, and within 3 minutes, there was a knock on the door and a guy fixed it, and now our view is beautiful. This place would be perfect for a family, or even two small families if you were really good friends. For couples, it's quite nice and spacious. Get a unit with a balcony if you come in summer -- it's the best thing about the place. We booked this through our time-share organization, where you never know what you're gonna get. If you're in the same situation, rest assured that this is one of the good ones. read more

When we were at Highlands at Sugar the buildings were old, they talked us into buying with false promises. For the past several years we have talked to two more GM's & NOTHING has been resolved! They just want to send bills to us! ! Don't believe a word they say! We got it in writing from the acting GM but they said they don't have to honor their promises if that person is no longer there! Buyers beware!! I have copies of their documents for anyone that wants to see them! Today they said because they didn't file the letter along with the deed, they don't have to honor their written statement! Good luck if you want to trust this company! I've been coming to the Highlands at Sugar since I was just a little girl. My grandparents owned a timeshare here, and my dad inherited it a few years ago. We have the place a week each May, and it is a week I look forward to each year. When we first took it over, we had a 1 bedroom place with a king bed, full kitchen, Jacuzzi tub in the bathroom, pull out couch, working fireplace and amazing long range views from the deck. Over the years, we've upgraded a few times to a 2 bedroom 2 bath and there is enough room for everyone! Over the years, the staff has worked incredibly hard to continue making improvements, and they are doing a great job. The only complain I would have is that about 45% of the times I've stayed, the jacuzzi tub hasn't worked; however...being that I have been coming for years, I know the tubs are older, and probably one of the most expensive things to replace in the entire complex. The staff here is overwhelmingly friendly and helpful. On our last visit this past May, I had come up to visit my parents (I loved coming to the mountains so much over the years that I ended up moving up to the Sugar Mountain/Beech Mountain area a little over a year ago), and wanted to surprise my parents while they were out shopping. I went to the front desk and told them my plan, and they were happy to give me an extra key, and even had suggestions to make my surprise better! The staff is extremely knowledgeable and helpful. They have movies to rent, a game room that's never crowded, indoor pool, hot tub and sauna. They even give you word games when you check in with chances to win prizes! They have wonderful information books in every room with restaurants and things to do. I absolutely love the Highlands, this place has been a part of my life as long as I can remember, and I wouldn't have it any other way! read more

Very disappointed. Reviews online were good, economical place to stay and now I know why. Had a terrible experience, found the property to be unkempt and our unit was disgusting. Arrived at 11pm after main office was closed, no exterior lighting (had to use cell phone flashlight to find our unit on the backside of the building down a flight of deck stairs in the pitch black). Unit was dirty, our exterior door would not lock and there were blood stains on one of the bed pillows. Was supposed to stay three nights and checked out after one (only stayed that one night bc it was so late after 7 hour drive and small children with us). Was not offered another room and was charged for three nights stay. Would not refund the two nights that we did not stay. In calling again for a refund after, was questioned as to why I did not just ask for another room. With the multi issues, I had no reason to believe that any other unit would be less dirty than the one that we had been given initially. Pitfall of booking economical hotel online. Hope this review helps prevent others from having the same experience at this property. read more
