Adam has a penthouse unit on the top floor. He is a scammer! I had a 5 day rental time and left a day early. I cooked breakfast once. I have perfect Airbnb reviews over the course of many years. I've never damaged any property or had any complaints. After staying here, I got a notification that he said a WEEK after I checked out, that small scratches on the stove were cause by me, after the cleaners came in. I did not make the scratches and he filed a complaint for $700! He is fraudulent and a scammer. Don't stay here and stay away from Adam in the penthouse! read more

It's our little piece of Heaven. Everyone who works for the Condos is pleasant and friendly! We have fallen in love with this part of North Carolina...one never knows their future, but we like this stepping stone for a new home when the opportunity knocks! As far as the outward appearance, built in the early 80's, it will be the only high rise Condominium on any mountain, as after construction there was a moratorium placed (not sure which jurisdiction) on Amy further such building. It may not be the prettiest part of the mountains for all to see, but to the ones living or staying in one of the condos, the view is spectacular! read more

Worst place we've ever stayed at!!! What made me want to stay at this resort in the first place. Location! On top of the mountain! Heck yeah! I reserved it back in March for a snow trip in December. My friends have been to Sugar Mountain for skiing and snowboarding in the past. What I didn't know and just found out days before the trip is that it's all fake snow. Like really?? If that's the case, I would've just went to Stone Mountain back at home! Okay, fine. The part that irritated me the post about the location now is that parking sucks. Like seriously. You are in lots. You cannot park at the top, it's only for owners. They should really consider making a parking deck cause only two cars are allowed at top to check in and get luggage. It really really sucks. We hated having to find a parking space. A shuttle does come out and pick you up but sometimes it takes so long, we rather just walk. It is so annoying. Think about it. What if I forgot something in my car, it's a hassle going to my car to get it. Urgh. That is just the parking part. Let's talk about the room. Walking in, it was a weird odd smell. Seriously smell like Goodwill or something. The place IS cute. We didn't even use the kitchen at all. I stopped using the kitchen because we prefer going out to eat when on vacay. I mainly got the condo because there isn't any hotel close by. The closest hotel is 30 mins away! Plus it's a 2 bedroom, 2 bath condo. The place is outdated. For example, there is no fan in the bathroom. What if we gotta do a #2?? The bathtub feels like you're about to break it. It's really sqeaky and not steady. Each unit is equipped with one 38 gallon water heater. It accommodates two showers per hour. The towels in the unit stinks. It's like it wasn't properly dried. The bed cover had a few small stains. Hubby is picky and pointed it out. The bed and pillows were not comfortable at all. We couldn't sleep well. We did have a good view on top but that's it. There's hardly any place to eat in the area too. It sucks. Never ever ever coming back to the area again. Maybe only for Grandfather Mountain! 306/3019 read more

Parking and dropping off luggage, passengers or food supplies is the most abhorrent I've ever witnessed. You got to see it to believe it. They have a large covered drive through to accommodate guests, particularly during rain, snow or high winds. But guests are not allowed to use it or the parking area around the building. Only permanent residents. When we left, our luggage was blown off our cart and across the pavement. No one came out to assist. Not even the shuttle driver who was right there when it happened. There are 320 condos. 175 are for permanent residents. The remainder are for short term rental. Apparently the Condominium Association hasn't been able to figure out how to accommodate both guests and residents equally. So guests get treated like their uninvited. The first person one meets is at the guard shack. It has the feeling of a boarder crossing. Hire and train your guard shack personnel to treat each person like a quest! It's your first impression. And pay your shuttle drivers well and pull the tip jars. And purchase larger walk on shuttles like the rental car companies use if you must continue the shuttle. At a minimum, restructure the short term parking and drop off area. Make the drive through available to guests. I won't be back. read more

My Wife, daughter, and I stayed here for 4 nights during mid July. Our main two goals prior to booking a stay in North Carolina was that we wanted to escape the Florida heat, and we wanted a place with great views. The views from our balcony, and I'm certain from 90% of the balconies here, were absolutely breathtaking. This condo is located at the very top of Sugar Mountain, and is over 5,000+ feet above sea level! Each condo unit is different, so I'll leave those details out and recommend that you seek out pictures and details from whichever company you plan on renting through. The pool area was very nice and had two separate shallow sections separated by a concrete wall/waterfall which offered added privacy. The pool area also offered large windows with panoramic views of the mountains. There were some negative aspects to this condo which you should know before booking. First of all, this building has no air conditioning. At first I just thought that the AC in our unit was broken, but come to find out the entire building is this way because there is very little need for it. During our mid July stay, the afternoon high temperature was only 77 degrees and it cooled down to 64 at night. So unless you enjoy chilly afternoon naps, this shouldn't be an issue for you. Secondly, renters are not allowed to park near the building because those spots are reserved for the unit owners. Instead, you have to park about 1/5 mile down the hill and be shuttled back up. This was only a minor inconvenience because the shuttle is free and runs 24 hours a day. Finally, I have to warn you about the internet. The wifi here is unsecured (safe?) and very slow. In addition to this, they put some kind of 'Third World' type block on streaming services. Hulu, Netflix, HBOGO, Youtube, none of these worked during our stay. Overall though, we had a great stay and this place is an absolute bargain in the summer time. read more

At 5100 ft elevation, this 12 story condo with 320 units is literally on top of the mountain towering above everything with outstanding views of Grandfather Mtn, Sugar Mtn and Beech Mtn. When the structure was built there was considerable unrest of the locals as well as all of NC because the huge skyscraper dominated the beauty of the natural mountain landscape. Because of this, a state Ridge Law was passed before the building was even completed. The law prohibits any building height that exceeds the mountain ridge that it is situated on . Today the building provides unmatched, unlimited views and close proximity to Sugar Mountain Ski Resort. It shows its 1980 roots, but provides reasonable value to visit the area in the summer and winter. read more

You drive for hours, you start getting really excited as you drive up the mountain and see the Christmas lights and talk about all the great stuff you will enjoy doing with family and friends. You get to the building you walk in .. so excited ..then you meet "Amber" the face of the resort who is either extremely rude or not mentally fit for the reception job .. anyways, you just promise yourself to not come back again Frankly, not her mistake but rather the management who don't do good job interviewing and coaching their staff. read more

If you are renting a place at Sugar Top (versus owning a unit) please read this. Our family rented 4 units at the end of 2022. The biggest issues, amongst many others, were parking and the elevator. There are 5 temporary spaces in front of the building for loading/unloading. So when we arrived, we pulled into a temporary spot and unloaded. I left my wife and kids to head to the room and then as a renter, you have park down the mountain in about 4 lots. Do not try to walk up the mountain to the resort as there is no walk way. You must wait for a white van from the resort to transport you up and down. If you need to go somewhere... white van. Also the parking lots are very muddy. Next, there are two elevators and when we were there, 1 was down (no pun intended). On our last day we waited 45 minutes to get a spot on the elevator with our luggage. Next, the building is very long. Upon exit you take your trash to an approximately 14" square trash shoot at the very end of the hall. The walk to the trash shoot is an easy 1.5 miles or 15 minute walk (see photo). Also be prepared to unpack your trash as the 14" trash shoot is very small. If you stay in an end unit and there is a fire, just give up. Finally, the units were last updated around the early to mid 1970s. Only one of our units had a washer/dryer, on a mountain, near a ski resort. We resorted to drying things with our hair dryer and a fan, not to mention the shag carpet in our unit was very absorbent. If you are hungry, there are no restaurants that deliver food, so get in the white van, head down to the muddy lot (don't forget your car keys or you may give up on life), find a grocery store, buy groceries, drive back, drop the groceries/family off at the resort, head down to the parking lots, wait on the white van to head back up the hill and then wait 10 minutes on the elevator. Easy 2 hour round trip. If you are skiing at Sugar Mountain, you take the van down to the parking lot and wait on the side of the road for a school bus to take you to the ski resort (not kidding). Overall, wouldn't stay here again, even if it were free. read more

If you are looking for a place that speaks "mountain" , this is not it. It belongs in Chicago. Year round residents image is somewhat spoiled by vacationers ready to experience the mountains. It is very disturbing that this high rise sticks out (up) and ruins the view of mountains. read more

Nice resort with beautiful views from the top of the mountain. Parking is a challenge if you are not an owner. Owners can park at the top but renters must park down the mountain and take a shuttle up (even though there was plenty of parking at the top). Some of the workers are pretty rude. Don't ask Amber (the young girl who works at the desk when you arrive) any questions unless you want a rude, condescending response. The environment is not very welcoming at all. You feel like you are being watched from the moment you step in the lobby. There is an indoor swimming pool but don't attempt to bring your water in with you. Don't think I would ever stay here again. read more

I don't if we could've done any better in the 'room with a view' department, as we are literally at the very top of a mountain almost a mile high. It is a pretty obnoxious sight, a 12 story cement building with no architectural design whatsover, but we had nothing to do with that, and we're just reaping the view from the top benefits. We also didn't have to deal with the parking issues that other reviewers complained about since we're here in June. It's at least 10 degrees cooler up here, and windier too, especially through the breezeway to the parking lot, so hold on to your hats! We're here to enjoy the outdoor beauty and local area, so we did not take advantage of the pool, sauna, hot tub, or gym, but I'm glad they were available to us in case of inclement weather. We could have easily given 5 stars instead of 4, but because of a number of minor issues in our unit, I could not, like non-functioning vertical blinds, coffee grinds under coffee machine, dirty ice cubes in freezer, clock needing a battery, lack of and broken clothes hangers, and the like. These were easy fixes for an easy 5 stars, but they didn't ruin our stay, and I would stay again. read more

We use to stay there all the time for the summer it was a cheap place to stay. No air conditioning you think you won't need it but you do. Everything you do you are being watched. When you make any purchases you have to go through the lobby. Front desk always looking for handouts. Pain to park in parking lot and wait for shuttle. We stopped going there because of the security who at that time Joey was in charged and was extremely rude and would try to show his authority which was none. Management is horrible, internet is monitored and censored to what emails you should receive. This is a place from hell Avoid it. read more

Prospective renters of Sugar Top Resort should be aware of certain situations and policies that are not explained to prospective renters prior to renting or arrival on site: 1. During the summer season, only unit OWNERS may park next to the building. Renters must park in assigned parking lots down the mountain and be shuttled back and forth from their car to the condominium complex. This is very inconvenient if you have groceries or other purchases .... or if you left something in your car, e.g., your wallet. Never mind if you forgot the milk for your breakfast cereal! If you have friends over..... they and their automobiles must be registered. They must also take the shuttle to and from the building. The shuttle is not handicap accessible. 2. Sugar Top advertises that all units have wifi. This may be "technically" true, however, the internet access is of the poorest quality. It is not unusual to lose your connection while actively on your computer. Please note: what internet service is available is "unsecured." The most disturbing aspect is that any type of "streaming," e.g., Netflix, You Tube, Hulu, etc. is BLOCKED! There will be no "streaming" movie watching at Sugar Top! When I asked to install local internet service (Sky Best) and pay for it myself, they denied my request indicating that I had to stay for three months or longer in order to be allowed to do that. 3. Each unit is equipped with one 38 gallon water heater. It accommodates two showers per hour. read more

My family and I have stayed here twice. The rooms were nice and the views are spectacular. There's an indoor pool and two hot tubs (look for the hidden one behind the weight room). On icy days, the drive could be white knuckle if you're not used to it. Couple of odd things. First, "in season" the owners of units apparently insist non-owner guests park in satellite lots and ride a shuttle to the facility. No clue why, since each unit has a reserved spot, the owners presumably have to pay for the shuttle, and it's a great inconvenience to guests. Perhaps a way to discourage owners from AirBNBing units? The other oddity is the lack of a restaurant or even a general store on property. So groceries and any night life are off property. Seems like a missed opportunity to have a well rounded resort. Service staff from security to front desk were all professional and very friendly. read more

I love this building. The apartment units are beautiful. Some of them are remodeled with modern hardware and furniture and some are still in the older style. Last time I've stayed there, I had one of the older units which was decorated with 80's furniture and allure that triggered many flashbacks from my childhood days. I loved it! The swimming pool is open everyday with a hot jacuzzi. Highly recommended! Good place for group vacations. read more
