The lady that works the front tried to accuse me of not paying for some books literally less than a minute after paying her. The store is…read morealways clean, well stocked with hundreds of hidden gems, RPG books, models, and boardgames that are out of print and very hard to find. They have some of the best stock in the state and the friendliest attitudes of any game/comic hobby shop in Texas. I have a very good friend who was affected by the recent flooding in East Texas and he recount this story to me: "Friday night I went to Book Stan, no big deal now since I am staying in Beaumont/Nederland for the moment. Miss Beverly knew I had lost 99% of my books and cards and some of my miniatures had been stepped on because they floated around the house. And the Friday before she told me to stick around and offered me a discount on the books I felt like replacing....being soft hearted as I am I cried and she gave me a hug and told me she was going to help me. I came in Friday and looked on the new stuff shelf like I always do, and when I got to the counter, I started to ask her for 2 of the books I had set aside to buy. She said I got 2 problems, first the discount I told you last week, Terry said it wasn't good enough and doubled it. And second I talked to Games-Workshop and they have given you money to help replace your books and the miniatures you lost....." I hear stories like this from all of my friends that go to Book Stan, its a fantastic hidden gem of nerdery in East Texas, the only problem I have is its so far away that I can't make it a daily trip.

I walked over from the coffee shop next door to check this place out; I've only been once before…read moreand had a decent experience then. However this time, the punk behind the counter was a complete ass. He told me that they don't allow backpacks (my laptop bag) in the store. This is understandable so I ask if I can give it to him to set behind the counter while I shop. He says no and that I need to put it in my car. This wouldn't have been a huge issue other than the fact that it had started to rain just a few minutes prior. I put my bag in my car and left. My business will go to a store where customers are treated with a least a little dignity. I'm not trying to steal from you, I wanted to give you money.

(I visited on a Saturday around 7:55 pm and they close at 9 pm). Upon entering, the place smelled heavily of incense and a mix of weed. Just too much weed paraphernalia for me and not a lot of records. And for some reason I couldn't locate the A-N rock section?!? Service. I think I surprised the guy behind the counter. It was really quiet, but then he put on some video (like a black and white football critique??). Too bad. This place looked really cool back in its inception.

The foremost issue is the selection. Out of hundreds (possibly thousands), of records to choose from, there's hardly any mainstream or popular choices. I ended up leaving with Paul Simon's self titled album, and it played wonderfully when I brought it home. But as previously stated, the inventory is lacking when it comes to essential records that most people would be interested in, and I settled with the familiar Paul Simon.

I went in at 5:45 pm, a fairly busy time for them, and they tried to stop me from going into the humidor because they were making a video. Who wants to keep paying customers from the money maker of your business? Are videos, which should be shot in slower hours or outside of business hours, making you enough money to cut customers from the cigars? This is horrible business practice and not very customer oriented behavior. I shopped here to support local business but I'm in Houston enough that all my business will be done over there from now on. This shop should really reevaluate how they stay open and place that as their number one priority.
