I live an hour away and occasionally stop by this shop when I'm in Beaumont. I've never had a bad experience until yesterday. The lady that works the front tried to accuse me of not paying for some books literally less than a minute after paying her. Never stole anything in my life and spent quite a bit of my hard earned money on comics and citadel paints from here over the years. Being treated like a thief in front of other customers and lack of apology just doesn't sit well with me. Definitely not going back! read more

I continuously return to this store and experience a fantastic time every time I go. The store is always clean, well stocked with hundreds of hidden gems, RPG books, models, and boardgames that are out of print and very hard to find. They have some of the best stock in the state and the friendliest attitudes of any game/comic hobby shop in Texas. I have a very good friend who was affected by the recent flooding in East Texas and he recount this story to me: "Friday night I went to Book Stan, no big deal now since I am staying in Beaumont/Nederland for the moment. Miss Beverly knew I had lost 99% of my books and cards and some of my miniatures had been stepped on because they floated around the house. And the Friday before she told me to stick around and offered me a discount on the books I felt like replacing....being soft hearted as I am I cried and she gave me a hug and told me she was going to help me. I came in Friday and looked on the new stuff shelf like I always do, and when I got to the counter, I started to ask her for 2 of the books I had set aside to buy. She said I got 2 problems, first the discount I told you last week, Terry said it wasn't good enough and doubled it. And second I talked to Games-Workshop and they have given you money to help replace your books and the miniatures you lost....." I hear stories like this from all of my friends that go to Book Stan, its a fantastic hidden gem of nerdery in East Texas, the only problem I have is its so far away that I can't make it a daily trip. read more

This is the store (actually the Old Gulfway Drive location) that got me into collecting comic books thirty years ago. The owners were always nice to an an obsessive and annoying 10 year old. I'm now living in Houston and have only been able to return once in recent years. They were still as nice as ever to my kids. I can't wait until I get the opportunity to go back and spend a few hours going through back issues. read more

The lady being the desk was super friendly and helpful in accommodating my request for starter duel decks for teaching my brother in law, magic the gathering. The store is huge and have a great collection of gaming products! Will be back if i visit beaumont again! read more

This place is hard to find, and seems to nothing more than an old workshop. It can get kind of hot inside and is cluttered, but its awesome. I love the old fashioned feel to this place. There is always the same lady behind the counter and she is very nice. They also having a gaming room and host tabletop tournaments. I've made the trip to the Stan about 3 times. I am not sure about this place? They have a ton of stuff most of it out of print which is cool but most of it is kinda over priced! I dont think you should pay full cover price for a book that has sun damage and is almost 20 years old! Now that being said they have a nice back area for gaming and its laid out pretty well. They DONT have restrooms which to me for a place you want people to come and have people play in your store for hours apon hours and not provide a restroom is not good service to me! The good side is they have allot of "stuff" and you can find that out of print supplement that you want for that long out of print game....course your gonna pay for it and probaly over pay at that! read more

Wow this place is huge and epic awesome if they don't have it you don't need it I wish I lived closer but it was still worth the 4 and a half hour drive I've been here twice and have been overwhelmed each time with the knowledge and sure volume of item in the store if you live in Texas and haven't been here you are missing out and Louisiana can make the trip easy read more

Any comic/game seller that operates out of a warehouse is almost certainly going to be good. It's like a vault of untold treasures! This sums up the experience pretty well: 1) It has many treasures. Some prices were around what you'd expect, meaning they were too high for anyone who isn't a serious collector of that sort of item, series, or game (and who would be willing to overlook the occasional rip, bend, or sunspot). However, SOME items were a great deals. I can't figure out their sales strategy, if there even is one. 2) Like a vault, it is not air conditioned. To be clear, they HAVE air conditioners, but they weren't using them, leaving us patrons to endure a musty, warm 85ish degrees. It may not seem like such a huge deal, but I came in there excited. I wanted to see EVERYTHING, but the hot air was eventually enough to cause us to wrap things up before we were ready to. 3) Like a vault, no public restrooms. In some situations, I understand it. You don't really want any vagrant off the streets coming in to turn your restroom into their mini-bedroom for the day. However, we were a respectable, well-enough-to-do family. We spent close to $100. My 10 year old son couldn't use your restroom for a brief moment? They have a game room in the back for card tournaments and (I assume) RPG sessions. Are you telling me that players have to step out, drive to a different public business (or home), in order to use their restroom? Bonus! 4) I didn't feel like they trust people there. I realize this is opinionated, so I almost didn't want to say anything. I wasn't followed around the store or anything. In fact, the distrust I felt from the woman behind the counter came after I made my purchase (again, having spent nearly $100). I had forgotten my longsleeved shirt I brought in with me over in their game area. I told her and she asked that I keep my bag of stuff I purchased upfront. Okaaaaaaaaay. So, I did. I didn't care. But then when I came back up to get my bag, she was eyeing my shirt the whole time. She didn't say anything, but stared at it the whole time. I felt like shaking it out in front of her so that she felt confident I didn't leave with anything. When you go into any small business, there is always that reservation we all feel in "okay, what will this be like?" (unlike how one feels at any major store, like a Target, where one generally knows what the inside will look like, what sort of items they could be sure to find, and how they will be treated). So, my final review is that, now that I know what this place is like, I may come back. They do have some great items and it is a lot of fun to look around. Any fan of comics, card games, roleplaying games, sci-fi, or pop culture is sure to find something they like. However, I'll go in with the goal of keeping my stay short and having as little interaction with the staff (at least the old lady behind the counter) as possible. read more

The Book Stan is very much like a gaming museum - there's tons of old stock on the shelf, including a lot of stuff from the early Nineties that'll instantly trigger nostagia for anybody who lived through that gaming era. However, there's no adjustment for rarity, so you can get a steal for the original cover price, or pay original cover price for something that's going for $2 on Amazon. That being said, the customer service is excellent, and the woman behind the counter is an utter sweetheart to her customers. read more

Hidden gem in SE Texas. Book Stan is a great comic/gaming shop. We are new to the game of Magic and figured we had to go to Houston to find knowledgeable and helpful shop/players. We went to two different comic shops in Houston before we found Book Stan. These places were small and had tiny selections of everything. We finally made a trip to Book Stan. Simply massive with tons of selection of everything. To top it off they were very helpful in getting us started. If you are in the area make the stop!! read more

Was on the lookout for a good comic/gaming store in the area to become a regular at. After visiting a few locations, a friend and myself found ourselves at the Book Stan to take a look around and feel the atmosphere out. I'll start by saying this - They have a good selection. I was impressed with the stock and items they had readily available. Sadly, that was far from enough to outweigh the customer service I received. The woman who worked there was pretty snide and general short with me, a brand new customer, and even managed to make a few blatantly rude remarks while I looked at what was available, and asked a few basic questions. The attitude didn't seem to change throughout the remaining time in the store, even after attempting to familiarize with some small talk. Needless to say, I left the store a bit pissed at the audacity that someone would treat a new customer/player like that in their own store. To conclude, I tried to maybe attest my experience to a 'bad day', or 'bad timing' with the individual behind the counter. But after speaking to a few new friends in the scene, apparently it's pretty common to be treated that way in the store, and quite a few simply stopped going there altogether. Definitely other places in the area with the friendly atmosphere and enjoyable staff to go to spend my time and money at. read more

Had a good experience here. Went to a card shop in Port Arthur to do a booster draft, but they didn't have a turn out. Showed up late to Book Stan, and they let us still play. Staff is very friendly and considerate. I recommend going here for any nerdy comic book stuff or trading card games. There is no place like it in this area in my opinion. read more

Best gaming store west of the Mississippi. Every comic book action figure or game you could wish for both in and out of print. If they don't have it they will order it. Sweet ladies who run it. I go mostly for the cards, even though it is a comic book store, but their cards are always overpriced, especially on the MTG Duel Decks. They had the Phyrexia vs Coalition duel deck for $30 on the release, even thought I could get it for $20 at the Walmart and Target in the area. If a card set is any older than the current one, expect it to be outrageously priced. read more
