Ordered 2 Untitled Table and Wall Lamp Nemo Ark on Nov 19 2025 with 4 to 8 week delivery. It is now 15 weeks and no sign of them. I ordered from the company because they're Canadian. I'd forgotten Canada's reputation for call centre penny mining stock scams and seniors frauds of 30 years ago. I see we're back at it in a different format. At 7 weeks I wrote asking where they were and was told the factory had closed for Christmas. I told them to cancel the order. They said they couldn't as they were in production. They just lied. Either the lamps had not started, they were being built, or had been built. If they were being built, they would not take more than a day to finish - they were just being retired for North American wiring. They were built which leads to the last option - they were built. if They were built or in production, it has taken 8 weeks to ship them from Europe to Toronto - and they still aren't here. I leave this weeks for 8 weeks and no one will be here to accept delivery. The Modern Shop says it's not their problem. customer Service just lies and says they're on their way. Dont believe them. The company is a scam or it's insolvent. They take your money and don't deliver. I'll be more careful and check Trust Pilot in the future before ordering again. DO NOT PURCHASE FROM THIS STORE. I'm out almost $2,000 for two chairs that I purchased online in September 2025. It's now late January and I still don't have them. Their responses are generic and simply link you to their no refund policy. I've asked for a refund 2x and been turned down. I have never experienced such bad customer service and lack of accountability to paying customers. At this stage I want my money back and to move on. They will not entertain this request and can't even advise now, almost 4 months after I paid in full, when the chairs will arrive. NEVER again. So frustrating and unacceptable. The Modern Shop has horrific customer service. They do not deliver on time and to other reviewers point, they don't mention the items are not in stock. It took over 6 months to get lamps I ordered. When they finally got here, the customs receipt said they were $300 each - I paid $900 each for them. They were the wrong colour. And they just dismissed me. I would never order through them again. Dont buy anything from this company. They lied to me about their inventory stock so it took two months to receive my goods. Finally bought the goods somewhere else, and then they magically arrived. Company wouldn't accept a return and dragged me along for weeks before basically saying "we don't care about you as a customer". Buyer beware! I ordered from their online shop- they were very helpful and communicative when trying to make a sale. Fast forward to receiving my MOOOI tabletop and base- well the pre-drilled holes in the tabletop do not align with the base as described on their website and the tabletop is very thin so drilling new holes seems risky. I emailed them at least 3 times, including a video showing them the problem and surprise, surprise- crickets- no response. So now I have a very expensive useless piece of trash. I don't even know if the tabletop is MOOOI or just a random laminate tabletop. EDIT: interesting I get a response now after 6 weeks. I disagree with the owners assessment I own at least 20 items of Moooi decor items and have never had a total fail like this. read more

This is a fraudulent business that charges customers for items that they have no intention of fulfilling on time. I purchased a rug that was "available to purchase" and would ship in 4-6 weeks. I haven't received the rug, a shipping notification, nor the refund that I requested. They will tell you the item will ship "in a couple of weeks" or "in a few days if you can just wait a little longer". I have zero patience for this and want my money back. The rug is out of stock at the actual rug brand store, so I fully expect that The Modern Shop will delay indefinitely until the rug is available again. No thanks! read more

I purchased a rug on boxing day of 2021 and it is now the 22nd of February (9 weeks) and still no comment from the business. When they are emailed, they do not respond, unless it is with a generic "no-reply" email saying that delays are the word of the day. The only way to get any communication from them is through Yelp where they are concerned with negative reviews. For context: I ordered a dishwasher AFTER this rug was purchased and received it after a 10 week wait FROM THE WEST COAST...through the destroyed highways. I have given them time to sort through the protests in Ottawa, understanding that there would be some issues, but their "service" is unacceptable. They will not issue refunds, only store credit on other things that "will be delayed". Seems like a very disreputable retailer who takes money on orders, delays long enough that the seem to hope you forget that you dropped $400+ on a rug and can make off with your money. As Andrea wrote in February 2023, it is disappointing to have to write this review, as things started out so well with The Modern Shop. Candace, the manager, spent an hour on the phone helping me to select lighting fixtures and standing lamps. Unfortunately, when she completed the customs forms, she made a significant error that raised the duties/taxes to about 50% of the purchase value. I was convinced of the error and independently confirmed that I was right. I stayed in constant communication with UPS but they needed a corrected invoice from Candace to recalculate the duties/tariffs and she was AWOL at that point. Days of phone calls and emails from me went unanswered. Candace only acknowledged her error and submitted a corrected invoice to UPS when they reached out at my request. Unfortunately, I was in transit at that point and could not go through the modified invoice myself, something I felt was necessary given that Candace had already made at least one major error. UPS returned the shipment. Customers outside of Canada, beware! This business does not know how to correctly complete customs paperwork and you will pay more as a result. And you can rest assured that all communication from The Modern Shop will cease the minute they run your credit card. Now The Modern Shop is saying that they will charge me for all shipping expenses, which I assume includes any charges that UPS levies for returning the shipment. I have already filed a complaint with my credit card company and will be doing so with the Ottawa Better Business Bureau and on social media outlets. Avoid headaches by steering clear of this business all together. (In anticipation of the owner saying that he has no customer named Rachel Z., which he did to discount an earlier negative review from someone else, I use my middle name online.) read more

Ordered 4 Muuto chairs, 6-10 weeks lead-time. $1200 deposit. Chairs kept getting delayed. Asked for a cancellation and refund of deposit, they wouldn't give it. Asked for a discount given the massive delays, they wouldn't give it. 30 weeks later, Muuto cancels production of the chairs. My emails with Modern Shop are a wasteland: mostly ignored, indifferent, boilerplate apologies, spelling errors, completely uninformative. You can't get anyone on the phone and they don't respond to voicemails. I don't pretend to understand the intricacies of the furniture trade and I don't expect Modern Shop to write me a dissertation on supply chain errors and small business hardships but I do expect my calm, un-irate emails to get answered when I've forked over a 1K deposit for a product that never seems to appear. 30 weeks later, after the chairs were canceled, I asked again (for a fourth time) for some kind of concession from MS or Muuto. They said they could give me 20% off another order. But I'm afraid this means they'll feel at liberty to respond to 20% less emails from me which puts us at almost zero communication. I'll pass. Here's the whole saga for those looking for a bad Russian novel of e-commerce: Sept 13 2023 -- Place order for 4 Muuto chairs. 6-10 weeks lead time. 1K deposit. Receive email that order has been received. 1 week later -- Email MS asking if Muuto has more approximate lead time. They respond: still 6-10 weeks from order date 3 weeks later -- Because of the vague lead times, I ask if we can cancel and get our deposit back. They respond 2 days later: because it's a special order, it cannot be cancelled but they'll get a clearer ETA and respond back. 5 weeks later -- No update from MS about clearer ETA from Muuto. I ask for an update. No response. 6 weeks later -- Ask again if they've heard from Muuto. MS responds: they've just heard from Muuto and the product didn't pass quality control and will be delayed until late December. I ask about a possible discount because of the quality control issues. No response. 10 weeks later -- MS sends a mass email that Muuto items are on sale. I ask if this discount can be applied to our delayed product. No response. I ask again. MS responds: No they cannot. 15 weeks later -- I ask for an update on chairs as it's end of December. MS responds: these chairs have been pushed to later in January. They are truly sorry. I ask a follow up question about this date, no response. 19 weeks later -- It's now end of January. I ask for an update, no response. I ask again for an update. No response. 20 weeks later -- I ask for an update. Complain about the lack of response given the lapsed dates... MS responds 6 days later: They're sorry, the chairs are now delayed until Mid-March. I ask them to confirm that they're still in production. No response. 22 weeks later -- Another Muuto sale. I ask again if they can apply this 15% discount. No response. 24 weeks later -- Ask again for the sale discount. MS responds: I believe you already have the discount. I ask for an invoice showing this. No response. 30 weeks later -- Ask for an update. MS responds: the chairs have again not passed quality control and they're no longer making them. The chairs aren't coming. I had previously given them a 1 start review because the company decided to IGNORE ALL MY EMAILS. They had sent me an item in the wrong color (completely different from the website). They claimed the color didn't exist (despite showing on their website) and that I would need to cover the price of shipping to exchange the item. I ordered a rug online Black Friday, Nov 30 to be exact, it was unclear the lead time on the product I ordered so after 6 weeks I reached out several times via email and have not heard a response once. The only response is an automatic reply stating that it f you ordered Black Friday that they are backlogged and try to understand. As you can imagine I have been worried that my almost 5000.00 purchase was fraudulent and to not even have a person on the other end to respond to my enquiry by email or phone has been the epitome of bad customer service in my opinion. Note the business ran a $25 store credit incentive for writing a 5* review. I'd imagine majority of their reviews are due to these incentives so please be cognizant of that when reading the reviews for The Modern Shop. I've ordered from The Modern Shop online twice, with the most recent one being over a thousand dollars. Them being a Canadian shop was a big reason why I decided to do business with The Modern Shop. I do not know how their brick and mortar operates but their online service is atrocious. The first order I placed in August went okay, lead times were slightly accurate, I had to wait just a bit longer than what was stated on their site. With COVID being a thing, I can understand that there might be a few delays. Second order was when it all went downhill. I placed an order for a large shelf in September, lead times are 6-10 weeks. Great, I can wait that long. It's going to come from overseas so that's understandable. I should expect it sometime around December. January comes around and no updates, so I reach out to their almost non existent support via email (expect to be replied to in a week or longer.) I was told "We have an early February lead-time for this order." Okay... I'll wait a bit more. In the middle of February, I ask for an update. I get told, "We are expecting this to arrive this month." I'm moving in March so I need to update the shipping address if I ever get the order. I give them my new shipping address -- no confirmation from them if that has been changed. It's now March, so I emailed again asking for an update and if they've changed the shipping address. They still didn't confirm if the shipping address has been changed but they did tell me it's now looking like they should get the item in the middle of April. In total, it's been over 24 weeks now and I still have yet to receive my item. I'm now stuck here wondering how difficult it will be to get a refund back to my card, or if I'll ever get what I paid for. I also had to ask repeatedly three times for a confirmation of my shipping address being changed. Do they even read your e-mails? If you are okay with being strung on for months on end and don't value your time or money then definitely order from here. Otherwise, I recommend looking at other companies. There are plenty of other stores that carry the same or similar brands, such as Gabriel Ross or Design Within Reach, that won't make empty promises and do provide accurate lead times. This has been a long winded review but to summarize -- spend your money elsewhere. On a different note, anybody doing their research on whether to do business with The Modern Shop, I kindly ask that you sort the reviews by lowest score on Google and read just how snarky the responses from the owner are. I wish I did that before I decided to make a purchase from this store. In early October 2020, I ordered items from the Summer Sale along with Christmas items. 5 months later (February 2021), still haven't received anything. I have written many times in Nov and December to enquire about my order only to be answered that short notice: "Should be landing next week" After Christmas, I have asked to be reimbursed. No answer. In October 2022 after many months of waiting we received a product from them that was missing key screws in order to even use the item - I immediately let them know. They responded and said the screws would be sent. Well, it's almost March 2023 now - no screws and complete stop in communication even after repeatedly emailing them. I also reached out to the manufacturer directly and was told it was on the Modern Shop to rectify this. I ordered a lamp online, I purchased the lamp specifically because it came with a remote control which was stated on their website. After I received the lamp it did not come with a remote control. I called the company, which does not answer phones, they only allow you to leave a message and they will call back. Nobody called me back. Finally getting an email through their instagram I emailed the company. They responded with a quick email stating that it does not come with a remote and they changed their description for the lamp on their site. This shop is the worst vendor that I've ever dealt with. They are impossible to get a hold of. I ordered a product for a client that arrived damaged - fair enough, this happens. I contacted them five times and couldn't get an answer about it. Meanwhile I have a client asking for details and I have no information to give them. Finally I commented on their instagram post that I had contacted them five times about a damaged item and could someone get back to me. Some one commented back immediately. Then I got an email. This is two weeks after I tried to contact them. They resent the new item. It arrived damaged again - I mean frustrating but apparently the item is shipping straight from the vendor so they don't have control over the packaging. I send them an email with photos of the damaged item. It takes two weeks and a follow up email to get a response. They get back to me. I say unless you can guarantee that this item isn't going to ship out in the same packaging as the last two we want to cancel the order - if you can guarantee that the manufacturer can pack it better we will take the item. So they tell me on March 8 that it will be packaged better and the item will ship "very soon" out soon. Ten days later I ask for tracking info. They tell me I'll get it when it ships. On April 2 I ask for an update and am told I will receive the item within 1-2 weeks. Two weeks and a bit go by and I ask for an update. No response. A week later I email again asking for an update. No response. I comment on one of their instagram posts again that I'm trying to contact them about a damaged item and can someone please get back to me. No response this time, but they deleted the comment so obviously they've seen it. SO PETTY. Honestly pathetic. A huge red flag that a vendor doesn't have a phone number listed on their website or on email signatures. DO NOT USE THEM!!! read more

I had high hopes when I discovered The Modern Shop online back in March. There was an item I was interested in purchasing from Denmark that I could only purchase through their store. Initially my experience was positive - I had a few questions which were answered quickly, and contrary to the other reviews, I received prompt responses when asking about timing for my order. Things started to go bad after I received the bookshelf - which was broken in transit. I was told to hang onto everything while the claim went through with the shipper and that a replacement shelf would be sent to me in about 6 weeks. I complied with all requests about taking photos and keeping the broken item until they were sure it wasn't needed then I was told to toss the entire thing. A few weeks later, when asking for an update, I was told that they hoped I kept some of the shelf supports as I was only going to get the shelves. (What?) I was worried the replacement would be broken again, but I was told that the shop owner/seller would repackage everything to avoid any risk of breakage this time around. But of course when the replacement came - of just one lone shelf, not even the two that were needed, let alone the full replacement initially promised - it was broken. If packaging an item in a mattress box that doesn't fit, filling it with loads of trash - including broken plastic strapping from some other shipment, deflated air pouches, broken bits of styrofoam, torn up trash bags, and someone else's packing slip - and topping it with another box since the original box didn't fit the shelf, is considered adequate for a cross-country transport, then they packed things up properly. Yeah...no. So it was four months of waiting, hanging onto broken shelves, and having to jump through hoops to return the latest broken item (after initially getting no response and almost tossing it) and using my own packing supplies to try and reseal the garbage-filled boxes - when they didn't even inspect what they were sending me to see it wasn't even the full replacement I needed, I'm less than pleased with merchant. The positive - they were very quick to refund me my money. But having to buy a temporary shelf, having to look for a permanent replacement, plus the time spent emailing with the merchant, taking photos, and dealing with the shipper as the merchant is now claiming I had an entire unit to send back versus a single shelf, makes dealing with The Modern Shop an experience I wish I never had and will never do again. And as they were claiming with the shipper on this second shipment that they sent a full bookshelf unit vs. a single replacement shelf, I'm wondering if they knew the single shelf was broken when it arrived in Canada from Denmark... UPDATE: My response to Michael's comment. I did state that I received a refund - hence 2-star vs. 1-star review. But it wasn't the fact that things were damaged - I didn't post a review either time. But telling me to toss the broken item then telling me that only part of it would be replaced, then only sending one shelf instead of the two needed without even checking to see what was in the box (or whether it was already damaged before you re-shipped it) made this a negative experience. And I still wasn't going to review the shop. Even when you didn't respond to an email about what I should do with the latest broken item then sending a email nearly a week later saying UPS would be here the same day. BUT you put me AT RISK with UPS and suddenly became non-responsive to my emails. UPS is expecting a full shelf per the damage claim you placed, not a single shelf. Which means UPS would come after me for something I didn't even have. So I had to correct the situation with UPS so I wouldn't be liable for not returning the full shelving unit that they were expecting back. So, no, it was not amicable. And if you had responded to any of my emails on this that you corrected the situation with UPS I might not have posted a review. But you went radio silent. UPDATE due to revised comment by shop owner: Again, review not based on the brand shipping the incorrect items and UPS damaging things the first time around. But in response to your updated comment since you think I should blame someone other than The Modern Shop: I do not blame anyone for the first mishap (though that was clearly UPS). I do not blame Skagerak for the miscommunication the 2nd time around. But instead of inspecting the items and seeing if they were broken AND noticing it was only a single shelf when you reassured me things were packed right, you only told me you hoped I had kept the poles/shelf supports. (And if I hadn't? And what would I do with just one shelf?) Even if it was intact and UPS broke it, your packing job was not good and likely would have caused it to break. But the review was because of the risk you put me in with UPS due to the false claim. read more

Complete lack of communication - thought they were not even in business anymore. Did an online order of a $1,000+ Jonathan Adler piece and asked for delivery confirmation date since I had not talked to anyone; it was received - then crickets...even though they knew it was on backorder and clearly not expected within a reasonable timeline. I was then sending emails with request #1, request #2....I think I got to #5 or #8 (over weeks) and asking if they were even in business and saying I was going to call Visa to cancel payment as they must not be in business before someone returned my email saying they were, it was on back order. Then I was at the mercy of WHENEVER it would show up (no option of refund) since the order had been already placed - even though they knew it was on backorder from the beginning and that had never been communicated to me. Let's pretend I was not giving this as a birthday gift (which it was and, it was extremely late - which it was). Buyer beware !! We purchased some Muuto furniture from this store and were given a five to six week order-to-delivery date. Approximately two weeks after our order we were notified that the "furniture had arrived" and that we need to provide them with a date for delivery. We responded to say that we already had a delivery date set to which we received a reply, from Mike, (who said he was the store owner), that they could only hold our furniture for "free" for 30 days. So, through our email exchange, I provided them with a new date for delivery and received a reply from him saying, "that will work". It's important to note that this furniture was to be delivered to our retirement home which is a SIX hour drive from where we currently reside. I made the six hour journey and requested a tracking number for the delivery however did not received one. I waited around the entire day for a delivery that did not come. My wife, during this time, managed to connect with someone at the store who advised her that the furniture had not, in fact, even arrived yet. I requested, considering that I drove 12 hours (in total) and sat around for a day, a discount on the order. I received "no reply" from Mike. In fact, I have never received a single reply of any sort ... not even an apology for HIS mistake. The delivery eventually did arrive four weeks later, yet a day EARLIER from the day indicated on the tracking number. I was shear luck that we happened to be there when the truck pulled up. We certainly will never purchase anything from this store again. Take your chances, but if anything goes wrong please know that you are on your own. The store has a phone number on their website but they won't answer it and, if your message has anything to do with a problem, they won't reply. Avoid this shop. They do not communicate at all about delays until after missing delivery and their tracking system does not work. My delivery was delayed 4 times and each time there was no notification and I had to call or email to chase them to find out about delays. These false delivery date ruined my winter vacation because I came back earlier to fetch one of the parcels and it wasn't delivered in the estimated range of time. Also, their tracking system fails to notify ahead of time because the notice only comes as it arrives at you door. My husband and I had to run from work to get these items into our condo unit and our work was really affected by these very malfunctioning deliveries. In the end, one of the items, our sofa came in "wrong colour" after a long anticipated wait of over 4 months with 4 delays. And the Modern Shop blamed the manufacturer for sending the wrong item. But to my knowledge they do check the parcel before arrival at customer's place so they obviously missed this at their check point. I inquired the manufacturer through email to figure out some solutions because I was not going to deal with the Modernshop anymore as they take forever to answer. They kindly apologized through emailed about my experience with the Modernshop, however, the owner of the shop emailed me to stop inquiring from the manufacturer as this isn't a big deal and that in the end "it is just a sofa and time will figure this out." This shop took four months to send me the wrong coloured sofa, and the owner is totally insouciant and dismissive about the problem that his shop caused. I don't understand what this owner has in his mind because he seems to think I had paid him thousands of dollars to wait for my furniture and my proper life at home. Really I was okay with delays but not being notified messed up my work and vacation schedules. And also when the shop clearly made mistake of sending the wrong item, the owner never apologized and try to make it seem like it is okay for his customer to wait another 4 months. Why shall I pay to get wrong item and then wait again for their mistake? Please avoid this shop. You have other local stores you can try that carries Scandinavian furniture. read more

I have tried to give second chances and benefits of the doubt, but every time I order from The Modern Shop I end up being frustrated. The customer service is not great, shipping times are extreme, and they are not sympathetic if products arrive damaged or broken. To top it off they bribe customers with gift cards for leaving good reviews. I will not shop with them any more. read more
