I consulted with Shawna before the move and we coordinated for my first visit to Avant Garde. Turns out, one of the front desk staff, Donovan, was someone I'd with whom I'd become acquainted five years ago when he worked the desk in another industry - he is so friendly and engaging, always upbeat and cheerful, I was so excited to be working with him again! The fact that he's been here for five years tells you how the salon treats their employees; Donovan seems very happy here. And he's great. Avant Garde is an Aveda salon and Aveda salons ALWAYS smell amazing! They have lots of great products for sale, and they have many wonderful beverages including a delicious tea for you to stay hydrated while you wait and/or receive your service. Since I was getting extensions out and back in, and getting a full color in between, Shawna and I were hanging out for quite a while. During that time, I was able to observe the other talented stylists around her station, and in turn, they came over to see these extensions Shawna was doing with me, since they don't do them! I noticed the stylists around spent a great deal of time educating their clients on how to style their hair and what styling tools and products would best help them, in a way I haven't seen too often elsewhere. Though I'd met Shawna at the other salon, this was the first time she worked with me. Leading up to and during my visit she was very patient, asked lots of questions on the style I wanted. She did a great job with the color and the extensions, as well as the cut, and I'm looking forward to continuing to work with her at her new work-home! I'd like to point out that Avant Garde is a full service salon and offers massage and nail services in addition to the hair services. For hair services, I've always found Aveda salons to be higher priced than other salons, in every city I've lived in, and that's not an exception here. Aveda products in general are a bit more expensive than other salon brands. Avant Garde is in line with that.

The majority of whom acknowledged that my hair was -- thin, aging, not much can be done, but we'll try. Sometimes the results were good, sometimes okay, and sometimes . . . Well, we won't talk about that. Arriving in Gainesville I tried five recommended stylists and was increasingly disappointed. Then . . . Ta da! . . . A friend suggested I seek out Bryan. This five-star review is the result. Bryan's professional salon is very private (indeed, you must follow directions fairly closely to find it), nestled into a quiet Duckpond neighborhood. Bryan himself is very welcoming, and the salon itself is small but comfortable, with everything he needs close at hand. Bryan's skill with cutting, including, yes, thin and increasingly aging hair, is amazing. In fact, my hair doesn't even LOOK as thin any more - no spots where my essential pink-ness shines through. And when I despaired over the shade of grey life is handing me, while at the same time choosing not to go for full-fledged color, Bryan suggested "brightening," a semi-magical process including foils, that lifts in a very natural way without setting me up for the whole rotation of color maintenance. I know that Bryan specializes in hair replacement, though I haven't needed those services (yet). But his high level of training is evident in the framed certificates on display - if / when I do need hair replacement, I will go to Bryan without hesitation. BTW, Bryan is amazingly knowledgeable about a wide range of topics that have nothing to do with hair, and conversation during the appointment is never boring. As an introvert, though, I should add that I've noticed that when I prefer to sit quietly, Bryan senses this, and the silence is companionable, never awkward. My colorist was top of the top in Dallas, expensive and so worth it. I've always believed you never know what you are going to find if you try someplace new. I read a lot of reviews of places in Gainesville and called a few. Just from the non-interest over the phone or the difficulties in getting an appointment shut them immediately down for me. Charisma for Hair was different. Super great on the phone. Explained that I would need to do a color consultation first and that was a first. I came in and sat with Ariel for about 30 minutes. I showed her pictures of my hair with my most favorite color. She adjusted it a bit as my hair is now shorter and she knew I did not want those skunky looking highlights. The fee for the consult was $40 but it applied to the coloring fee when I came back a few days later. Not only did the color come out perfect but better than perfect. Most of my white hair (thanks, Mom) is at the crown and super porous and takes a lot of color to get it to set. Ariel colored the crap out of that stubborn white hair! :) I sat in my car and cried because I looked so pretty that day and after a very hectic three months in Florida - it was the first time like I felt like myself again. My coloring was on 10.5.21 and today is 11.27.21. I'm just now starting to see a peep of the white show up again. By my count, that's about six weeks and that's exactly how long Ariel said it would be before it started coming back in. In Dallas, this always cost about $300. It was less than half of that. I have had the fortune of having Lonnie Carpenter as my hairstylist. In the two years I have seen Lonnie, I have consistently found him to be conscientious, creative, intelligent, and possessing the highest skill set. I would not hesitate to recommend him. When I came to Mode, I sought Lonnie's counsel and was met with a "Hair Solutions Consultant." Lonnie has demonstrated a specific propensity for eliminating my hair limitations. Instead Lonnie uses hair limitations as an opportunity to share his advanced training in the technological advances made in the hair industry. He has proven he can overcome both genetic and environmental obstacles that kept me from having the hair styles of my dreams. Recently I came to Lonnie with part of my hair over worked and fried. I knew new growth was the only solution and the needed time to accomplish that would be miserable. Lonnie didn't miss a beat when he suggested I put a handful of micro-extensions in my hair. These extensions are genius!!! He matched the color perfectly and the beautiful extension's texture hides the damage. They look natural and were extremely affordable. They last three months and that will provide the time needed for the new growth but without the misery. Lonnie totally thinks outside of the box and as a result he offers unique services. Most pay big bucks for extensions but by offering mini-services he makes the Hollywood treatments affordable. His drive to continuously better himself and stay on top of the industry makes him a treasured asset. You won't find another stylist as adept as applying his skills. read more

About a year ago I decided that I wanted to find a new salon. I chose to visit this one for the first time because I wanted a salon that was downtown as I like to support downtown businesses. I also liked how the business was located in a restored property rather than a strip mall. My first visit was terrific. The business is positively lovely, inside and out. I like the attention to detail in the design and layout of the property. It is very relaxing to be in such a lovely space. My only complaint with the property is that the sign near the road is quite small. Sarah Hunter cut my hair. At the time, she was new to Mode so I thought that I'd give her a try. She is a pleasure to work with. She started the appointment with a consultation. She really let me explain my concerns and was very attentive. She then gave a brief (5 min) shoulder massage, washed and then cut my hair. She also took my suggestions immediately during the cut. Perhaps I should also mention that I forgot about the appointment and they had to call me and I showed up more than 15 minutes late! They were kind and understanding about this. I have recommended three different friends to Sarah who have all loved their hair. I have also been back at least one other time, I can't remember if there was a third appointment or not. In all, I would strongly recommend Mode Salon and particularly Sarah. read more

When I originally moved to Gainesville from Ft. Lauderdale, I was skeptical to find a trustworthy stylist in town. However, a friend of mine recommended Lonie before he opened Mode Salon. I have been seeing Lonie for the past 4 years and will continue to visit Mode Salon while I am in grad school. The Salon is absolutely gorgeous. It's located in an old historic home right across from the Duck Pond neighborhood. You will feel a sense of peace and relaxation upon entering the salon. The staff are all friendly and you will always feel special. Additionally, the salon uses excellent products (e.g. GHD, Davines, etc.), which is a plus! Lonie, in particular, has a way of making all his clients feel beautiful; you will leave the salon feeling beautiful, too. He starts all appointments with a stress relief massage, and will make sure he knows exactly what his client wants before he gets to work. Lonie also does a great job with educating his clients while he's working on your hair. He really is a wealth of knowledge, so you can ask him anything. Surely, he will know the answer. Lonie is simply fabulous! Most of my friends either see Lonie or other stylist at Mode - never disappointed. Best salon in town! read more

I have been going to both Mode locations for over 4 yrs. now and have always been happy with the results. I love the open chair policy because Christina Meng who is a master cannot always be available. She has recommended another person and there is no problem going to both stylists My color formula is kept at both locations for my convenience. The Davines and Aveda products are all plant derived and there is no comparison to the excellent quality. I love the idea that all Aveda products are made by villagers from which the native plants grow and Aveda pays fair wage to its employees all around the world. Since I have gone to Mode there has been not one drop of any chemical or synthetic product on my hair and it shows. Both locations make me always feel welcome and comfortable. .Other salons have always started out great but once they get used to me coming in it seems they lose their enthusiasm and my hair suffers as a result. I will continue to use there 2 fantastic salons not just because of the quality of care but the pride and professionalism each person has. read more

Mode Salon is a nice change from the usual salons in gainesville. very tastefully decorated. I have been looking for a stylist in gainesville ever since I moved here 12 years ago. I decided to give Anne-Marie a try. and she is the first stylist I found that listened to what I wanted and was willing to add a little of her own creativity into my haircut. For the first time in 12 years I walked out with hair that looked great and up to date. I'm not saying I haven't had nice haircuts before, but all the stylists I have gone to even when given liberty to go for it always feel restrained because they don't want to give me a "bad" haircut. Anne-Marie advised me on how to style my hair type and was able to give me a haircut I could manage and that looked hip. This is the 1st salon I've gone to that made me want to stay, make it mine and tell everyone about it. I loved my haircut and the coloring was perfect. But my love for Mode Salon goes beyond the great cut and color. It is the serene and warm ambience. It's so nice to walk in a salon and not be accosted by fumes and noise. Salons make me dizzy, frazzled and stressed. Therefore, I've been lacking any hairstyle and used store bought box dye. I'm so happy I stumbled on Mode Salon housed in a gorgeous turn of the century house with beautifully decorated rooms, high ceilings and eclectic charm. Until I found Mode, I had 5 years of bad luck with salons all over Gainesville... I had never really found a stylist who's talented or that I've admired as much as the London-born one I had in Orange County, CA years ago. My sister-in-law referred me to Mode this year, and I fell under the care of Stephanie. She did exactly as I asked, a simple haircut and style, but it turned out much more stylish and flattering to me than I had dreamed of. And it was still easy to care for. I loved the products she washed my hair with and bought the shampoo and conditioner, which are the best products I've ever used on my fine, wimpy, oily hair. It's much softer and wavier now with less frizz. As other reviewers have said, everyone there is friendly, very welcoming and the old house is so cozy and chic. Spent $55+20% tip on a bad haircut that took 20 minutes- no shampoo, styling after the cut, or any products used. The stylist, Claudia, did this to save time because she was 20 minutes late for (my 11am) appt. When I questioned the price due to the lack of shampoo, styling and products, the desk clerk argued. I shouldn't have paid and certainly shouldn't have tipped, but I did just to get out of there as fast as possible before I burst into tears over the horrible haircut I got. Will not return and do not recommend. You're better off going to Supercuts. EDIT: I received a phone call from the salon offering to refund my money IF I removed my bad review. From the moment I stepped in the salon, their staff made me feel like the most beautiful bride. They celebrated with the wedding party, ensuring every detail of the day and getting ready was perfect. My hair up do with extensions and makeup lasted all day and I had so many wonderful compliments. I felt elegant and natural all at once. It exceeded my expectations. I will definitely be returning for any future events needing hair and makeup! I have additionally starting frequenting the salon for my color and cuts. Finding a salon in town that will cut my curly hair dry and style it was a unique and very welcoming experience. Macy taught me how to properly care for my curls and has educated me on tools and products that I should be using. I always feel at ease when I visit the salon.

If anyone would like to contract with a defensive business owner who isn't open to customer feedback to improve their services, then by all means that is your choice!! ................... I contracted with Moxie-To-Go in Gainesville for my sister's wedding which included 14 services (hair/makeup). Overall, the experience was a major disappointment. Moxie was quick to respond with a service quote but in hindsight, after signing, I realized the makeup artist assigned to my contract didn't do airbrush. The service menu said "traditional/airbrush" -- it should clearly state which service is being provided if both aren't available! Check this before you sign with Moxie. This caused a major issue down the road for us. The bride had a poor experience at the trial and Moxie told her the makeup artist assigned to our event didn't work well with mature skin so they had the hair stylist (who knows how to airbrush) do makeup for the bride. So Moxie knowingly sent a makeup artist who didn't work with mature skin well, as we're all in our 40s. There were other communication issues related to day of logistics, like creating a service schedule, that Moxie wouldn't help with and said they never make schedules. It just seemed so disorganized. Nearly every email I sent to Moxie for guidance, a different person responded to me, which confused things further. It would be nice to have a dedicated support contact for a special event. The day of the wedding there were 4 of 5 bridesmaids disappointed with their makeup for various reasons but mainly color matching and foundation issues. The hair stylist on site offered to fix us all (we were very grateful for that and she did make us feel better) but then she had to manage 8 hair styles plus fixing makeup for 4 bridesmaids. I just felt the service/end result we received did not match the price at all. We found out later that the makeup artist isn't licensed. We put faith in Moxie based on other positive reviews, but they didn't deliver and caused extra stress for the bride and bridal party before and during the event. We ended up having to tip more because we felt bad for the hairstylist who fixed our makeup -- when in reality, we should have been getting a refund since the makeup had to be fixed in the first place. Our hair stylist was amazing. No issues with hair and she at least fixed our faces. For some girls she had to completely remove the foundation done by the makeup artist and start over.

Helen is SUPER. My…read moreusual practice is to grow my hair until it's ungodly long and then donate it, which is great for the soul and saves money on haircuts but which has serious drawbacks. The problem with this methodology is, my hair when long is 1, very heavy and hot and 2, absolutely hideous on me, so I was desperate for a haircut. It had been such a long time my usual place had gone out of business, so I asked my always-perfectly-chic friend, who told me about Millhopper Hair Design. I called Helen and she obligingly worked me into her schedule. I jetted over there expecting a rush job since I was a last-minute add-on, but I figured, who cares: it will be shorter, and I will no longer be forced to report to the workplace looking like I'm on the Netflix show, "Keep Sweet, Pray, and Obey," and that is a win. When I got there, Helen greeted me right away and made me feel welcome, listened to my incoherent, "Chin length: I wanna look like Grace Kelly" instructions, went through hairstyle books until she found a picture I liked, and then spent over an hour washing, conditioning, meticulously cutting, blowing, and flatironing until she succeeded in making my unruly hair look exactly like the picture. I then went and jumped into my friend's pool and ruined all her work, but it's now the next day post-swimming and showering and I have a fantastic wash and wear haircut. It is perfectly even and smooth and frames my face beautifully, even without the blowdrying and flatironing I am, let's face it, never in a million years going to do. The TL;DR: Helen has a true gift. I love this haircut, and I cannot recommend Helen highly enough: she is absolutely top notch.

She gave me a cut and highlights to help accommodate my silvering hair that's been dyed darker -- and I love it! She did it so that I can come in for only quarterly touch ups vs coloring frequently.
