My beautiful and genius wife showed me this bakery, and WOW what a delight. As always, my wife was correct. This place is fantastic. The service was great, super friendly. Served everything up within a smile. Loved to be able to watch them in action kneading that dough. I got the grilled ham and pimento cheese sandwich on rye. The bread was out of this world. Great chew and crunch. Buttery. Fantastic ham and pimento cheese. We also go the ham and cheese scone and wooooooah nelly. They grill it up for you in butter so it's nice and toasty. Just next level. We also had the cinnamon roll which was probably the best I've ever had (Drake voice). Cream cheese icing was perfectly not too sweet. When my wife told the employees that last time we were in town they were closed due to being short staffed, the kind workers expressed how bummed they were we had to wait so long. Then they gave us two free mini biscuits with apple butter. Wow. Top level service and the apple butter was great. The vibes were great. Parking was plentiful. Do have to go down stairs. We learned that Midway Bakery made the desserts for Wallace Station so we decided to go straight to the source for dessert. Nestled right outside the darling town of Midway Kentucky Midway Bakery appears to located in an old school. The building houses both apartments and the bakery. Walking inside the bakery doors your senses are awaken by the wonderful smell of fresh baked goods. We had the cinnamon roll ( make sure to have them warm it up) oh my dripping in buttery goodness. Our second pick was the Wolford cookie, it looked like a chocolate type cookie but there was a surprise, not chocolate but a delightful spice. My husband said it reminded him of Christmas. The entire bakery is in sight of the counter and is immaculately clean. It is worth a stop. read more

Absolutely fantastic little bakery. That Bourbon Chocolate Pecan Pie is excellent. We visited here for the first time on a road trip through Lexington last year and just had to stop by again since we were driving through the area again. This time, we stopped in at around 2PM to pick one up but they were all sold out. The cashier actually called one of the restaurants that the bakery supplies (Wallace Station down the street) and managed to reserve a pie there for us! Unfortunately they didn't have an entire pie ready; instead they had to bundle together 6 pie slices into a container. I can't complain though, they really went out of the way for us. What stellar service. Bourbon Chocolate Pecan Pie - An absolutely perfect pairing of a slight bourbon flavor with the rich sweetness of chocolate and sugar syrup. The pecans are crumbled into smaller pieces than a typical pecan pie and are well distributed in the pie. Unlike a traditional pecan pie, there are so many pecans that they did not all rise to the top. The Midway Bakery is definitely worth a stop! read more

Don't expect every bakery item from them given limited equipment in a VERY old/small repurposed schoolhouse cafeteria. The cakes are worth the money, and the scones are the best outside of England! Absolutely worth the hour and change drive from home to reach this destination bakery! The bourbon chocolate pecan pie is just right sweet and full of tasty pecan bits and a hint of the nectar that is Kentucky bourbon. The loaf of rye bread made amazing toast for breakfast and the assortment of cookies were always yummy. By far my favorite was the country ham and cheese scone - warmed up with a drizzle of fresh butter and I'm drooling just thinking about my next one! The service was great and the young lady who packed up our half of pie generously added an extra slice when one of the slices was broken in cutting it up to fit in the container. Midway School Bakery is one of the jewels in the culinary crown of Ouita Michel. It provides many of the scrumptious goodies people cobble up at her restaurants like Wallace Station, Windy Corner, and Smithtown Seafood. Tucked in a back corner of this old, school building, Midway Bakery has a nonsense interior dominated by a kitchen. Small tables around the perimeter give you a place to enjoy your treats. It's hard to choose between the gargantuan brownie, cookies as big as your head, and amazing scones. You can opt for a savory pick and enjoy a house-made bagel with smoked lox! I went for the Betty Anne scone ($2.95) with craisins, dried apricots, and white chocolate chips. My mom decided on the rich, dark chocolate brownie ($3.95). We took bagels home ($1) and had a fantastic breakfast the next morning. My suggestion, if you're reading at Wallace Station like we were, drive a few miles down the road and pick up a freshly baked dessert! My wife and I planned a little winter road drive on Old Frankfort pike and noticed this place when making plans. So happy we stopped in for some breakfast treats to enjoy before a day doing distillery tours. I highly recommend the cinnamon scones, the cinnamon mixture was fabulous. It was the perfect cinnamon to dough mixture. Best yet the scone was still a little warm which made the experience even better. My wife got a peanut butter rice crispy treat that was scooped like ice cream unlike the traditional squares. It was crispy, peanut buttery, and drizzled with chocolate ganache. The School is part of the Ouita Michel's restaurants/businesses, located within the old Midway School. People are helpful and friendly, willing to take special orders in advance. They use local when possible and take great care when baking, and it shows in the taste! Their selection is not massive, what they prepared yesterday or baked this morning is what they have. I would recommend their variety of scones and the Buttermilk Bourbon Chess pie. Give it a try if you're in the neighborhood. read more

My family and I visited this bakery while road tripping through Kentucky and found it, and the picturesque town of Midway, quite charming. We tried the breakfast sandwiches (best with an English muffin), the ham cheese and chive scone (to die for) and the blueberry muffins (some of the best we've ever had). After having a great lunch we wanted to find someplace to get something sweet. Midway Bakery hit the spot and had all the sweet that you could ask for. The had everything from cookies to pie to cupcakes and so much more. The most unique thing was the corn Cobb cookie and by its name it did taste like corn. It wasn't to sweet it wasn't to vegetable tasting but it reminded me of a cornbread sugar cookie with just the right amount of sugar. The building is part of the old high school in midway and they use the old cafeteria as the bake shop. This is a nice little piece of history that you can approximate while eating something sweet. They do serve a small menu for breakfast that I included but did not try any. read more

Midway Bakery is the supplier of many of the desserts served at Ouita Michel's restaurants. They also happen to be on my way to work in Midway, so I'm a frequent visitor. They make THE BEST cream cheese & lox bagel I have ever had (Holly Hill Inn cures the lox), and their country ham and cheese scone is flat out delicious. I originally stated that their donuts were subpar, but I'm going to retract that because they have changed their donut recipe and the new version is everything a yeast donut should be...and more. This is a very small bakery and they don't have a very wide selection. You won't find chocolate eclairs, cakes, or croissants. They make a variety of cookies and pies, but I will admit that I find a lot of their products to be on the dry side. I enjoy their breakfast sandwiches (very small, on biscuits) but their quiche, though very good, loses something when reheated in the microwave, which is how it is served. I also like their iced shortbread cookies, but they only have them on very special occasions. The staff at Midway Bakery are awesome...some of the nicest people you will ever meet. They made cranberry shortbread cookies during the holidays that were so delicious I kept buying them out! If you go, try the bagel (handmade) with chive cream cheese and lox...or the bagel with pesto, tomato and fresh mozzarella cheese. And mention the cranberry shortbread...maybe we can get them to bring them back! read more

Just down the road from Wallace Station in Versailles, is the Midwest School Bakery- yes, you can buy their baked goods at Wallace Station, but it is sure fun to stop into the bakery. I loved this place! I've driven by numerous times and never had stopped. Now that I know what this place has, this will forever be my Midway pit stop. Keep in mind that it's an former elementary school cafeteria, now being occupied by culinary geniuses. It was pretty cool to see the bakers in their element. I've been to hair schools and the stylists are all students. That didn't seem to be the case here,at least when I was here. We chatted a bit with the head baker, or whatever she's officially called. I recognized her from the random newspaper clippings posted around the place. Now, onto the goods. DESSERTS with two esses, because two desserts are better than one. Ok, that was a bit corny, I just randomly made that up. I got a peanut butter cookie... huge! I'm happy to report that I only had one though. My husband had a cinnamon roll. It had cream cheese icing an inch high. Oh my! I only had a bite, I'm proud that I contained myself. I'm almost sure that he wouldn't have parted with another bite anyways. My friends and I stopped at Midway School Bakery while on the Kentucky Bourbon Trail. It's definitely a must stop if you're in the area or on the bourbon trail. The building, itself, is located in an old school house, and is very reminiscent of the 60s. The bakery makes quite a few things: pies, scones, cookies, bon bons, bagels, and more. There's even a small selection of gluten-free products. I purchased one of their bourbon chocolate bon bons and the "Betty Ann" scone. The bon bon was soooooo amazingly rich and delicious. Anything that Ouita Michel does, I'm going to follow. My husband and I stopped by for breakfast sandwiches and cookies (because cookies in the morning make sense) -- and are so happy we did. He had lox on a bagel, I had sausage, tomato, cream cheese on a plain bagel. The bagel was super chewy and good -- and I don't know where they are getting the sausage but it genuinely was the best I'd ever had. We shared a corn cookie and a ginger. The ginger was the real winner here, whereas the corn was very hard. I brought my friend their cinnamon roll and she said it was the best she'd ever had (mounds of frosting. mmmmmm) There are about 15 other things I want to try here, so we will definitely come back. Huge disappointment. First of all prices are too high. $2.95 for a muffin or cupcake? I ordered a blueberry muffin which was clearly inferior to the same product at Panera or Krogers. I also ordered the cupcake of the day, chocolate with cream cheese frosting. No idea how good that might have been as the clerk packed the wrong cupcake.
