I received two £60 vouchers for Nikki Ips restaurant as a Christmas gift in 2023, totalling £120…read more We used one voucher in February and spent around £50. When we asked if we could have the remaining £10 as a voucher for our next visit, Stefan, the manager, was completely unhelpful and insisted we had to spend it all in one go. We ended up buying a drink just to use up the balance and left disappointed. We planned to use the second voucher for our anniversary in August 2024, only to discover it had expired in June 2024--just six months after it was issued! When I called the restaurant and unfortunately spoke to Stefan again, he bluntly informed me there was nothing they could do. He mentioned that other customers had recently called with the same issue, claiming it would have been explained when the voucher was purchased. I found this hard to believe since I had bought vouchers for my parents around the same time, and no such restriction was mentioned. It feels like Nikki Ips is scamming customers with these short expiry dates, and Stefan's dismissive attitude only made the situation worse. I've never encountered a restaurant voucher with such a limited time frame, and it seems like many others have been caught out by this tactic. I would strongly advise avoiding this restaurant--especially if you have to deal with Stefan, who is as unhelpful as they come. Save your money and spend it somewhere that values its customers and doesn't play games with their vouchers.

This place offers more authentic chinese food than the usual chow mein and chop sueys offered elsewhere albeit at a price. A word of warning - try to avoid the ground floor in the Winter. Whenever the front door opens you'll get a blast of cold air so you'll be much more comfortable upstairs. The food is excellent, good quality ingredients and well prepared and the portions are generous enough. All in all this is a decent place to eat but it is pricey (and don't ask if they do prawn crackers!).

There are three areas a lounge, the bar area and a smoke room, in which, of course, no smoking is allowed. The lounge and the smoke room both have wonderful open fires essential as I am writing this. The welcome from the knowledgeable staff is also warm and the locals are very friendly to we incomers. There are no TV's, no juke-box and no food (other than bags of Tyrrell's crisps) so that conversation dominates. Upper Gate Street is also the road which leads directly to the Youth Hostel, making this the first pub hostellers encounter heading into town a definite plus for us!

In recent years it hit hard times and was eventually closed down. However there has been a recent development that will be of interest to proper beer drinkers. The pub has been purchased by a mysterious London based banker with roots in North Wales. He's re-opened it partnership with four local breweries The Conwy Brewery, the Great Orme Brewery, Bragdy Nant Brewery as well as the Purple Moose Brewery from Porthmadog. The pub is now a dedicated real-ale boozer with a particular emphasis on locally produced ales. There won't be any food (apart from crisps) as the premises doesn't have a kitchen so it will still be a drinker's pub but hopefully one with a more discerning clientele than of days gone by.
