If you're only skimming reviews, here's a one line summary: this place is notorious as a target for thieves, and until they provide a cloakroom or similar I won't be going back. I'm posting this review here because the Mezz have been deleting politely written comments and enquiries from their Facebook page.
Last Friday a group of 6 of us went to the Mezz for an 80's gig. A few hours later we left minus 2 coats, a college hoody, a phone and a purse. In a sweltering bar with a band playing to a capacity crowd it seems ridiculous that we're expected to wear coats and jackets at all times, however it seems that this is what you're expected to do in the Mezz. In the space of about 30 minutes several items of clothing belonging to our group went missing along with a few almost full drinks (whether this was due to scabby customers or over-zealous barstaff I couldn't say). We left the venue only to discover a number of other people in the same situation, at which point one of the bouncers informed us that this often happens. Moments later a girl in the group realised that her phone and purse (containing cards, cash, Dr's ID etc) had all been lifted from her bag which she had on her person all night.
I've been in touch with Lost & Found who took all the details but didn't give me great confidence. We left a comment on the Mezz FB page which was summarily removed, but not before we received a flood of messages from people who had suffered similar losses (on the same night and previously). I appreciate that thieves can strike anywhere at any time, but I've heard about the Mezz before in relation to this issue and this seems like a disproportionate level of loss for such a small group (and believe me, we're all well used to being out and about in Dublin).
I've been to most of the clubs, pubs and venues in the surrounding area and not once have I ever felt I'd need to keep a jacket on the whole night for fear of it being lifted. The hoody taken was a UCD class top with a monogrammed name, completely WORTHLESS to anyone other than the original owner.
The Mezz would want to seriously consider the option of a cloakroom. It would pay for itself and give punters a bit of peace of mind. I know there's 6 of us who won't be going back until we can be reasonably sure we'll be able to head home fully dressed. read more
