    2024 Meisner Film Festival

Whether you've always wanted to become an actor or are simply curious but ready and willing to work hard, The Meisner Technique Studio is top-quality training. I remember searching for acting training in the Bay Area two years ago after deciding to pursue this strong, intangible feeling that I believed could be my dream. Now, after completing the 1.5-year formal training with Jim, I am overwhelmingly grateful for choosing to work with him, as it has undoubtedly been the best decision I've ever made. I'll admit, at first, I was skeptical, as some of you reading this might be. The whole thing seemed too good to be true--the website, the overwhelmingly positive reviews, and even my interview with Jim, who came across as such an authentic and genuine person who truly CARES. However, after completing the training and everything that comes with it, all I can say is that it really is that great. Jim will teach you CRAFT--the craft of becoming a grounded, truthful, and present actor. An actor who doesn't act from the head in the moment, but rather acts from the gut with truth and perspective. This craft is not something you can immediately pick up and master; rather, it's something you can hone for the rest of your life. This alone makes the training invaluable. However, craft is not the only thing you will learn, and I'm sure all my classmates and the alumni would agree. This training forces you to learn about yourself in every facet. This isn't only crucial for being an actor, but also immensely valuable for navigating life with purpose. I am 100% certain that even if you choose not to pursue acting after the training, it will still undoubtedly be worth it. But if you do choose to pursue acting, you'll have a solid foundation, a great start, and a community that you can call your artistic family!

I have no direct experience of the kids' classes, but the kids all look/sound very excited to be there so I'm guessing that it's a good program. I just finished my first, 9-week course: "Sing Out," a musical theater course for adults. It was fabulous - nine students in the class, and we met weekly to go through whatever piece we wanted to work on that week. The teacher, Scrumbly, is superb at coaching students to connect with the emotional "charge" of the song to call forth in their performances. The course culminated in an incredibly fun recital. We each sang a solo and at least one duet, and ended up with a group number "Hey, Big Spender" complete with hip bumps and sultry shoulder wiggles. Considering that half of the class was over 40 and male, that was especially fun. If you are afraid of showtunes and jazz hands - stay away. Or, better yet, use this excellent class as an opportunity to work through your bizarre phobia. The only thing that keeps this from being five stars was that I wanted more "ME" time in the rehearsals. With nine students and so many pieces (solos, duets, group) to run through, there often wasn't the time to delve deeply into an individual piece. This class whetted my appetite for individual instruction, so I think I will take this group class again and supplement with private lessons. Mi, mi, mi, it's all about me :-)

Seeing Lisa Fischer live on a chill SF afternoon was cool. She took time to meet her fans, thank them, and take some selfies. My seat was first row in AA1. I took some great pics and videos that I have to post on YT because they are beyond the 30 second limit. Her band was the Grand Baton. I left a picture of the setlist she performed. Some great covers and a couple of songs from her album from 1991. If you're not a Lisa Fischer fan, interest fact is that she was tour background singer for Luther Vandross and The Rolling Stones in the 1990s. I have heard of this theater, but never actually went inside of it until now. it's a nice cozy theater with a stage and two level seating the orchestra and the section behind it. Any seat you can have a pretty good view point. I came here for an artist talk called "Art at the Presidio Theatre: Andrew Pick & Ursula Xanthe Young". Andrew Pick, a pastel and oil painter based in San Francisco, trained at both the City College of San Francisco and The Art Students League of New York. His plein air paintings capture the city's streets, skies, and hidden corners with immediacy and intimacy. Ursula Xanthe Young brings her signature blend of intricate architectural motifs, feminine iconography, and dreamlike cityscapes to the space. Her work--well known throughout the Bay and beyond--draws inspiration from the urban world around her, reimagining San Francisco as both myth and Memories. This show was moderated by returning artist Rhonel Roberts, whose own work opened this series. This is a chance to hear the artists discuss their process, their paths, and the shared landscapes that inspire them. Yes, there is much going in this area with one Presidio Go Shuttle bus and one muni bus 43 Masonic that actually comes into this park. The 30 Stockton bus stops by the Sports Basement and it is also a 4 minute walk up the stairs to the Presidio tops park. I happened to follow Ursula Xanthe Young work and found she did a skateboard exhibit at the Minnna art gallery too, so obviously I am going to check it out and that is why both these reviews are now posted back to back
