I came to Sam after a year of voice lessons in London. I started taking lessons with Sam last month, and I can already feel like it's life-changing. To me, Sam is like a therapist, friend, singing coach (duh!), and inspiration -- all wrapped in one. She has a very calming, positive energy. She's also patient and kind. Sam started the first few lessons by doing the vocal exercises with me, which made me less scared to embark on the singing journey. After just a few lessons, I am more observant about my voice - and I'm eager to continue building power in my voice, which will help me in daily life even when I'm not singing. Sam is an incredible teacher for 3 reasons: She's gifted at establishing comfort. Although I've been a performer for years, singing in front of others causes anxiety so great that I often find myself shut down by my inner critic. Sam's openness, acceptingness and patience allowed me to remain calm and focused while singing; something I have not been able to do well before. She's willing to try whatever it takes to get your style of signing right. In the past, I've had singing coaches who've had a narrow view of what is proper in technique and style. Sam is more focused on helping you be the best singer you can in the style that you want. The lessons are just flat-out fun. I sense her positive energy as soon as I walk in. As a long-time musician and vocalist, I've worked with many vocal coaches over the years and must say that watching Sam in action is as good as it gets for vocal coaches. I reached out to Sam to work with my teenage daughter who has sung in singing groups since a young age and is also a songwriter. My daughter had some serious physical setbacks due to surgery and felt that she had just lost some confidence with her singing. I researched many Bay Area vocal coaches online, and Sam was my number one choice based on what I read and what I heard. I really felt that she was the one coach who would relate extremely well to my daughter and have the greatest impact. At the time, Sam really did not have the bandwidth to work with her, but she felt so much for her situation that, even though she really had to stretch to make it work, she took her on and the results have been amazing! Sam has worked not only on vocal technique (a huge upgrade for my daughter's mixed voice work compared to her previous male vocal coach), but she is also helping guide her on songwriting, setting up gigs, teaching her about the business of music, and assisting her with setting her goals in order to reach her dreams. Not only has she been a great vocal coach, but she has been a wonderful mentor, a life coach, and just an amazingly positive influence. I had sung for years in a band and solo acoustically, but had generally put more emphasis on my songs rather than my voice. A friend recommended vocal coaching at Sam's studio to me, and I got lessons as a Christmas present. I probably did vocal coaching with Sam for about a year and a half after the initial few lessons were up, then continued to work with her and some of her Inner Voice students with guitar accompaniment at performances and demo recordings. As well as a great business, it's also a great community that Sam has built up, which has lead to a bunch of musical opportunities and new friendships. From a technical perspective I like a lot of attention to detail. In particular I wanted to gain more control over my head and mixed voice, work on vibrato, improve belting, and develop my screaming technique. Sam gave me a lot of guidance in these areas, and also directed me to relevant textbooks which she though would be useful. I got a lot out of these ('Singing and the Actor' and 'Complete Vocal Workout'). Another great part of Inner Voice is the opportunity for live performances, which has lead to multiple shows, open mics, and guitar accompaniment. Singing live is an important step in developing vocal technique, and it's great when someone organizes this for you, and provides support and feedback. Overall, Sam has built a great business which can cater broadly for multiple vocal styles from a beginner level, to very advanced specifics. She's also a great person and friend which makes a massive difference in this line of work. read more

Sam is amazing! I was a beginner with zero singing background, but she made me feel at ease immediately, and got me way out of my comfortable little shell just the right amount. She's so patient and helps you think about things in new ways, not just with music but in life as well! I'm much more aware of breathing, posture, learning how to use space, trusting intuition, and figuring out very specifically what's hard about something in order to tackle it. Sam coached me and a group of my colleagues at Aruba Networks (a Hewlett Packard Enterprise company) on presenting and public speaking. She made the session fun and interactive by peppering in the techniques and skillsets required for an effective and powerful singer as it would relate to a presenter before an audience... a very interesting addition to what other public speaking / communication / presenting courses that I've had in in the past are missing. As would be required for a strong singer before an audience, Sam coached the group to vocalize, powerfully and confidently, which is incredibly important, but seems to be missing in your traditional presentation courses. At the same time, she honed in on the power of authenticity in connecting with your audience, not just didactically, but through example with her own refined skills in connecting with our group. For me it was a mystery: why does my voice just seem to fade away, often when I need it the most? Sometimes I had a strong, resonant voice, but at other times I would struggle to make myself heard, managing only a faint, raspy shadow of my real voice. My doctor said all the physical stuff was OK, so that wasn't it. And it didn't seem to be a straightforward fear of speaking in public, since my voice often seemed strongest when the pressure was heaviest. So what to do? Sam took on the challenge with gusto. She started with some vocal exercises, and with some technical discussion of how the body actually produces the sound. Fascinating stuff, even if it meant I spent my spare time driving around San Francisco making some very strange noises in the privacy of my car, with windows safely shut. She also focused on the mind-body aspects of speaking, engaging me in a fascinating conversation about the emotional and confidence related aspects of various situations. Sam has a knack for probing these kinds of issues in a very thorough but completely non-judgmental manner. Along the way Sam helped me get ready to make a big speech at my daughter's wedding. Nervousness was definitely an issue there, and among other key insights, Sam convinced me that being nervous was OK, that everyone would understand and even expect me to be nervous in that situation. At some point my sessions with Sam led to an important realization about just where I was holding tension in my body in certain situations. That realization, along with the tools Sam has given me that allow me to get my voice working even if it doesn't want to, have helped me enormously.
