I've been a student of First Take for 3 years now. This school witnessed my transformation from a stifled up introvert with stage fright to a confident performer landing auditions at some of biggest movies being filmed in Bay Area. I can't champion First Take enough!!! I am extremely grateful for the assistance through the years in practicing and perfecting my craft. First Take was the very first acting school I went to.. and I think I've been totally spoiled in that regard. Nancy is an incredible teacher- she really listens, understands, and most of all, she really does care about her students! Her teaching style has helped me grow immensely both as an actor and as a person. I originally thought I'd try one session and "see how it went." That was the tip of the iceberg- I was hooked and learned so much each session that I stuck with it, and now 1.5 years later, I find that I'm still learning by leaps and bounds every week. Nancy is honest with each of her students and tells them exactly what they need to know to move forward with their work. As an aside, my workplace gives me free credit to take classes every year at the University- I've taken two 9-week acting classes there (theater and film acting), and I found them nowhere near as helpful as First Take. I realize that in the grand scheme of things I am still very much a beginner and have lots to learn, but thanks to Nancy's class, I now have a safe place to learn, make mistakes (c'mon we all make them), and enjoy the process of acting. I also have a family of incredibly talented and supportive actors who I regularly see at auditions locally. Her students have accomplished so much in Film/TV yet remain so humble and real. I LOVE studying at First Take. I have been taking classes as First Take since 2003, and it has been amazing. Definitely tough, but amazing. Nancy is a wonderful teacher, and cares so much about her students. She goes beyond just being a teacher. She's very honest, and encouraging, and very generous with her students. Not only does her acting method work, you get guidance in other areas of being an actor as well. Advice on headshots, marketing, how to maintain good relationships with casting directors etc..... The class environment is really wonderful too. Everyone is very supportive of one another. There is no sense of cattiness or competition. It's like a family. We support one another and are really rooting for each other's success. This is so valuable, because being an actor is hard and can be really scary and feel really vulnerable sometimes. Being in an environment that is supportive, where you can feel free to be yourself, helps make you a better actor. The method of acting that Nancy teaches really works! If you take this class and stick with it, you will improve as an actor!! It's all about bringing the magic and uniqueness of who you are to every scene and really making situations in the scenes real for you. This may sound simple enough, but it's not. I have been taking classes with Nancy, Danny, and the incredible team at First Take for two and a half years. This class has changed my perspective on the craft, giving me a professional outlook that I never knew I could adopt. This summer it will be (2) years I've been studying at FirstTake. I came about FirstTake in a 'round about' fashion. I had first been introduced to FirstTake by a former student I met at a seminar. They had recently booked a number of appearances on the series 'ER' and encouraged me to 'check out' the teachings at FirstTake. However, it took me a few years to do so. Attending an 'audit' class at FirstTake, I was immediately taken by the supportive and encouraging style of Nancy Berwid. It was quite different than my college days and other classes I had attended in my past. I decided to 'take the plunge' and sign up for classes. I have been completely thrilled with my decision . I've found Nancy's teachings to align with many of the notable greats of acting. Additionally, hearing her philosophies and framework echoed from major L.A. casting directors and agents is reassuring as well; you are learning the 'right stuff'. I feel completely confident I'm learning skills and techniques which are conducive with the film and television industry today. Coming from a theatre background, Nancy's techniques provide me the tools to better approach acting for film and television. Additionally, Nancy presents opportunities to be learn the 'business' of acting. One doesn't become a working actor by ONLY studying the craft. I've gone to 6 acting schools including getting my B.A. in drama, been acting on and off for 13 years on stage and screen. But never have I felt so cared for until I came to this school. As much as I liked other schools, I often felt like a staked piece of land, a supplier of money merely to keep their business afloat. But there's something really special about Nancy and the school--I got right away how she is so loving. Love comes in different forms. Love means telling the truth of what she observes in your acting, pointing our your strengths and weaknesses, but it also means picking you up when you are truly down after having failed miserably in a scene or when you're feeling like a loser if you're not getting work. Nancy does both. With the classes, I must say that it's very non-traditional. It's not structured like a class-class. There is no beginning, intermediate, and advanced levels. The learning curve is initially slow. But I assure you, if you put in the time, stay enrolled, and do the work, you will become a better actor. I've never felt so honest and truthful in my acting, which has better informed my acting on stage and screen. When I look back on my work that I did prior to coming here, I cringe at how awful of an actor I was. The camera doesn't lie and really mirrors the truth, so if you're not bringing that truth and reality to your performance, you don't stand a chance. But this is not something that you can simply conceptualize and take out into the world--you have to put it into practice and hit the ground running; this school provides the perfect environment to begin and further hone this process. I can't believe that I actually go to L.A. for auditions living in the bay area. I also can say that I've auditioned for some pretty big/high profile projects, and have an L.A. credit on my resume. None of this would've been possible had I not come to this school. The same for my classmates who are now my friends, as they are all down to earth and cool people, have booked some serious noticeable credits in Hollywood. The school respects the craft of acting, which is to be honored, while also respecting the business aspect, which also needs to be honored if you're to get anywhere in show biz. You'll learn all that you need to become a working actor if you come here. You can audit the class, but if you want to experience the full benefits and impact, you need to sign up and stay with it. You'll get what you put into it. I've been in this class for 7+ years and I stay in it because I know I need to keep my acting muscles tight, to be prepared for whenever that phone rings for an audition. It saddens me to read about negative review of Nancy's class because she is such an amazing person and the most giving person I know. Plus, I have never felt like she was ripping me off. I have been studying with Nancy since June 2005 and it as been such an incredible journey. I have taken so many other acting classes and I can honestly say that until I met Nancy, I didn't know what honest acting was. It sounds so simple, just be yourself, but we all wear masks to shield ourselves from the pain we've experienced in the past. And I've been hiding behind the mask for so many years, that I was "fake acting." My rawness and pain never came out until I met Nancy. She shares so much of herself, her pains from the past, that I felt comfortable letting the mask fall. Was it easy? Hells, No! But, I'm glad I stuck with it, because she got me to open up and rather than hide myself, to embrace myself and know that I'm enough. And did Nancy ever promise me anything? That if I stayed in her class, I would be in a major movie with a pivotal scene with Jude Law for Steven Soderbergh's upcoming thriller, "Contagion"? No. I stayed in class, because I love it and knew she was hands down the best acting teacher. Did the movie happen? Did Steven shake my hand after shooting and thank me for doing an amazing job? Hmm... Nancy is a good teacher there is no doubt about that, but if you take class here you need to be okay taking class with 25-29 other people in a normal three hour class period. She also works as a manager, which has its pro's and con's. Pro - you learn alot about the industry. Con - you have to listen to her spend an hour every class talking about the auditions all of her clients are going on. Which is kind of cool, because it's your classmates, and kind of sucks because it feels like you are wasting precious class time. She also works as a full-time minister and the people who attend her church are awesome but zealous and they will definitely try to witness to you. She will try and get her husband to take your head-shots and sell you a t-shirt =). She will also push casting director workshops, which I found useful but expensive. Sometimes it feels a little like those other acting schools that try to sell you everything including your mother's kitchen sink. This school didn't leave a great taste in my mouth, but I think the people are fantastic, and as long as your prepared for what's in store, you can learn quite a bit. read more

There are good things and bad things about First Take. The good is that the acting instructors know about the craft, they understand well how the biz works, and students in casting director workshops do get exposure to industry professionals. But First Take is overpriced, dangles more than it can deliver and feeds off of the wannabe-actor-dream-mentality. First Take's founder/director is Nancy Berwid. She has reputable, though not extensive, acting training - for example, she is a graduate of ACT's Summer Training Congress. However, apparently she was not able to succeed as an actress, so she turned herself into an acting coach/acting manager/preacher (what a combination!). According to the First Take website, Ms. Berwid's industry contacts come "from being raised in a family of Hollywood entertainers and executives ... Nancy has used this special insight into the industry to bring the magic ... to the business side ..." And Ms. Berwid likes to remind her students frequently that she has these industry connections. Her mantra is that she can't make you a star but she can get you working. Interestingly, she neglects to mention that even if her expensive courses ever do get you closer to a paid gig, it is highly unlikely that you will make a living as a TV/film actor. I have taking several First Take casting workshops, at which students are given sides and perform in front of the class. The casting directors are involved in major Hollywood productions. But unfortunately, each student gets precious little time in front of these professionals. Students are taught that their strategy should be to take more First Take casting workshops so that they can build relationships with these casting directors and then eventually - possibly - get some work. It's probably helpful to check out First Take's website (http://firsttake.org), which features a man who walks onto the homepage from stage right and starts out asking "Would you like to be a successful actor in TV and film? At First Take we can help make your dreams a reality." Needless to say, it is cheesy, and it has the look and feel of one of those late-night/early-morning TV infomercials promising that you too can make millions in real estate in your spare time. First Take's tag line is "The proof is in the booking." This seems to be true: out of all the hundreds (or thousands?) of First Take alumni, only a small percentage have ever worked professionally in film or TV. The website prominently lists the roles that 40 students have had - most likely the only ones who have in fact obtained anything. And almost all of the infrequent jobs listed were bit parts or minor roles. Apparently, not one First Take student works consistently. And as far as can be gleamed from the website, none has ever had a starred in any major film or TV production. First Take definitely has something to offer - good instructors, contact with working casting directors, and the very distant possibility of realizing your dreams. But First take's founder should grapple more with reality and less with fantasy: for Bay Area actors, Ms. Berwid suggests driving to Los Angeles from the Bay Area for auditions - fine for people who actually own a car and are independent enough financially to take off with one or two days' notice, but not practicable for most actors. In short, the acting training is fairly good. But the career advice is cult-like. The implicit message is that if you believe the mantra and work their method, then you too will be employed in Hollywood soon. Many First Take students take classes for years and spend far more there than they will ever earn from paying gigs. It's best to sign up and pay the high prices only if you can see through the hype and accept that you are most likely spending a lot of your cash on an expensive hobby. read more

I've been with First Take Acting Program for 7 1/2 years and continue to learn and grow as an actor. The atmosphere is supportive, the information is right on and Nancy teaches each of us to bring our own personal essence to the role. I trust her laser eye. Kathy recently taught an on-camera class that was excellent and applied all we work on in class to being in front of the camera. This is the best way an actor can continue to live here in the Bay Area and eventually work in LA. I highly recommend this acting program; it's amazing to watch people grow and become better actors. I have over the last 6 years study with various teachers in San Francisco, and in coming upon First Take and Nancy I found an acting program and teacher that has continuously been a challenge and provided the perfect environment for me to grow as an actor who brings more of himself to the work and characters. The class offers students a learning experience that focuses on teaching them how to break down a script to work to develop the key components needed for bringing the characters to life. Her industry background and ties create a focused atmosphere for honing skills for film and television work, but character work that carries over to wonderfully to other forms like theatre, which has benefited me greatly over the years. Along with the artistic side Nancy also brings and offers up to the students a wealth of knowledge on the business and marketing side that help gear you for getting work. This place is a joke! All they care about selling their products. I took the beginners class at the Pleasant Hill location, which happened to be a pre-school class with no stage. The first 30 minute of each class is always about trying to sell their products. At the beginning of the session I requested to transfer the fees to the next session I was refused. Got ripped off! Nancy is an amazing teacher who understands the craft of acting and knows how to teach it! She will never give her students unrealistic expectations about what it takes to succeed in this business. Nancy will be the first one to tell you that it takes time, hard work and training to become a professional actor at the highest level. Moreover she cares about her students and will do everything she can to help them. Because of First Take I went from very little acting experience to working on a major network prime time show in just a little over a couple of years. I have a well respected LA theatrical agent, audition in LA regularly and continually have amazing opportunities. I consider myself in the game...with opporunity upon opportunity to actually work in this highly competitive business. When all is said and done, is it reasonable to ask for any more? This business is not for the meek...just sayin'! This is the best class to take if you want to work in film and television, and Nancy is your best choice of teachers if you really want to start working in this industry. She really knows what she is doing. She will never steer you in the wrong direction. And the cherry on top is her compassion. She really cares about her actors and really wants to see them succeed. I have studied with her for 2 1/2 years and I am here to tell you, she is a fantastic teacher and MANY First Take actors book roles in major film and television projects. I've been a student at First Take for 3 years and I have learned so much about acting and about what it takes to land gigs in Hollywood. I've seen many of my classmates on television shows and in movies, and I'm really inspired by what I'm learning. I love that First Take provides a nurturing environment in which I can grow at the pace I want to. I don't feel pressured to achieve some artificial goal, and that inspires me to keep at it. I've seen many of my classmates on television and in movies, so don't believe that guy named "Al" who says First Take students never make it on TV. I maintain a calendar of TV appearances for the First Take Facebook page, and I have watched all of these folks in roles they landed as First Take students: Alex, Carl, Carolyn, Eduardo, Erik, Hector, James, Joelle, Kathy, Kristi, Kristin, Kumi, Miranda, Rosie, Roshni, and Seema, just to name over a dozen who come immediately to mind. To make it in Hollywood, you have to get solid training and maintain a good network of industry contacts; First Take provides all of this. However, you can't expect to take one or two eight-week sessions of training and expect to land a gig. For every co-star role on network television, there are 1,500 auditioners. You have to work hard to stand out, and if you go with First Take, you will definitely learn how to do that. read more

I took Daniel's beginner class, which consists of four classes, three hours + (sometimes Danny goes overtime) per class and it costs $250. I'll start with the pros - Danny is detailed and will work with you on your scenes until he feels it is ready. He sometimes gives good feedback that helps to improve the actor's craft. He teaches you how to imagine yourself in the situation of the character, rather than just play emotions for a more richer performance. He teaches you skills to make you better at cold reading (i.e. look at the other actor as much as possibly), and he tells you if he thinks you need to tone down if he thinks you are being too theatrical. Cons - Danny plays extreme favoritism and spends class often flirting around with males and females alike (calling them "really cute", "soo cute", "pretty gal", "cute as a button", "good looking", "baby" etc. etc., constantly almost every class) , which I found to be unprofessional and uncomfortable when I witness these actions. If it's an acting class, I expect the teacher to know these boundaries and know when is going a bit overboard. It sort of takes the focus off the acting sometimes. The reason for the two stars is because I did not feel welcome in his class. If I am paying $250, I should feel welcome in this class and should feel that it is a safe and comfortable environment for me to experiment, grow, and learn. This was not the case as he definitely favors some students over others. He would try to critique me in my scene and help me develop, but it wasn't helpful even after 30 minutes plus. If he would be more fair than biased and treat every student equally, and if he would try harder to EXPAND and DEVELOP and EXPERIMENT with his strategies in helping the student develop his/her craft besides his usual of making the student do it over and over and over again with sometimes no improvement despite attempts at feedback, I might consider taking First Take acting classes again. A good teacher knows how to get a student to grow and blossom and metamorphasize into the role with his directing. This wasn't the case for Danny. He tries and does well, but could use a lot more work if he wants to be an EXCEPTIONAL teacher. He's supportive to some students and completely ignorant and unsupportive/emotionless to others. Unfortunately, my experience has made me hesitate on whether I would consider ever coming back again. I remember searching for an acting school a little over 2 years ago and the first one that popped up was First Take. I was hesitant to call because I was nervous to finally do what I've always wanted to do. Something told me to call the next day and I am sure glad I did. I ended up auditing on comedy night and although I was nervous being there it was fun to watch everyone do their scenes. I emailed First Take letting them know I would like to start the next coming sessions. I can now say that I love being at First Take. Our teacher Nancy has taught me so much about the acting world that I honestly never knew existed. Her passion to teach all of us is immense and her dedication is obvious. We learn to dissect the scenes and bring our lives into it and it comes naturally. The environment is positive and uplifting. I definitely feel safe and comfortable amongst the fellow acting students. Nancy is a great mentor and listens enthusiastically and offers great constructive criticism. Not only does Nancy support us in our dreams, but she takes a practical approach in us succeeding. The best thing about being in class is we all root for one another. read more

Nancy and her acting class have truly changed my life. I have been going to First Take for three years now and in those three years, I have learned more about myself than I ever have before. Nancy is an amazing Teacher and friend. Everyone in the class is great too! Nancy's teaching methods are unlike many others. That being said, I believe in her methods completely. She not only teaches us acting, she teaches you how to be the best version of yourself. Her classes are my therapy. Our slogan is, "the proof is in the booking." Which is very true. There are many working actors in her classes. In Nancy's class, it is not so much a question of if you can be a working actor, but when.
