I've been coming to First Take for the past 4 years and haven't looked back. I love being a part of this school and community. It really feels like a family and such a safe environment to grow in your acting as well as a person. I really appreciate Nancy's teachings and guidance on navigating through tough scenes. I feel like the atmosphere that First Take has created is one where actors can both challenge themselves and feel rewarded when they put in the work. Also it's inspiring to hear progress from fellow classmates and see them book roles and audition regularly in Los Angeles. If you're looking to get into TV and Film this is a great place to be, not only do they help you hone your craft, they also teach you how to film self tapes, give you an idea of what casting directors are looking for, and what is really going to make it in the business.

My background's in theater, and for over 5 years, I've taken many different acting classes in San Francisco. I finally narrowed my focus down to acting for TV and Film, and this is by far the BEST acting program I've come across. Al Pacino once said, "Acting is not acting," and I never understood what that truly meant, until I took Nancy's class. This class uses an immersion technique which is very sound, and really works. Plus you'll get advice on how to manage your acting career and how to sell yourself, and it's more advice than any other acting class in the Bay Area! If acting is what you really want to do and you live in SF Bay Area or L.A., this class is indispensable. Two thumbs up!!

Hi Jane, yes, of course. Acting can be studied by anyone, especially with all the diversity inclusion and ethnic roles in mainstream film and television. First Take's motto is "You are enough". Contact the school for a free class sit-in at… Read more

Being an actor is no easy profession, and this training is a true testament to that. While you can…read morefind the history online, like the fact that Jim Jarrett is the last teaching protégé of Sandy Meisner, I will spare you the standard bio and share the real story. It took me over a year on a waiting list to get into Jim's class. In the meantime, I took the foundation classes with Philaree, who was instrumental in preparing me for the formal training ahead. Looking back, the wait was absolutely worth it! Through this program, you experience Sandy Meisner's brilliance combined with Jim's grit & determination to produce high-quality actors. I had never acted before I joined this school, but today, I can confidently step into a scene and trust my work. This training gives you the tools and technique to: * Become a brilliant, active listener. * React truthfully under imaginary circumstances. * Use your own life experiences to deepen your work as an actor or director. * Discover your own unique gifts, build a character authentically, and "earn the right" to speak and move on stage or screen. * Discover that the training will inevitably bring out the writer in you. Jim as a teacher is a blessing, but the community here is also another real deal. Because Jim is selective, you are surrounded by a pool of serious student actors who push your limits and inspire you daily. With a limited number of students, Jim invests personally in every single student. Furthermore, this program instills the deep discipline and professionalism required on a real set, reminding you that acting is never solo work; you are accountable to your scene partners and the crew. This training genuinely changed my life, and I will be forever grateful for the experience

I just completed the two-year training at the Meisner Technique Studio and it was without question…read morethe most significant, life-changing educational experience I've ever had. The program gave me real, reliable craft as an actor, but its impact went far beyond technique. The training demands accountability, consistency, and presence -- showing up early, prepared, and fully committed -- and that structure alone was profoundly growth-producing. Just as importantly, the studio provides an exceptionally safe and supportive container for deep personal work. I was able to work through emotional blocks rooted in childhood and adolescence that I had carried for years. I'm also a therapist by trade, and I wish I could prescribe this training to clients because of how powerfully it supports emotional growth, self-awareness, and resilience. Jim Jarrett is an extraordinary teacher -- clear-sighted, demanding, compassionate, and deeply invested in his students' growth. He has a rare ability to see exactly what is happening in an actor and to challenge them in ways that lead to real, lasting change. The community is another invaluable part of the experience. I formed lasting relationships with a cohort of emotionally intelligent, generous, and committed artists, many of whom I continue to collaborate and practice with. You leave the program not only with strong tools, but with a supportive creative community and the confidence to continue developing independently. This training is not for the faint of heart. It requires a serious time commitment and a willingness to prioritize the work, but the return on that investment is extraordinary. There is no ceiling on growth -- the more you put into it, the more you gain. I also highly recommend the optional business class after the formal training. It left me feeling far more prepared to approach auditions, self-tapes, and the practical realities of a professional acting career. TL;DR: Truly life-changing. The best thing I've ever done for myself -- both in terms of craft and personal growth. I cannot recommend this program, or Jim Jarrett, highly enough.

I have nothing but good things to say about Dogpatch Foil! I can't remember my instructor's name,…read morebut he was so kind and knowledgeable. I actually went to two lessons a year apart. The only barrier to me going more is that it is so expensive for one lesson (over $300). The instructor explained the super high cost of the foil itself, so I understand the need to increase the lesson price. I would love to do this more regularly, but cannot for this reason. I decided to splurge on the first lesson and was gifted the second lesson. We put in at Crane Cove Park. I have been there many times but never swam in the water. I was outfitted with a wetsuit, helmet, and booties. I never felt cold while in the water. During my first lesson, they connected this radio to the helmet so I could speak to the instructor while out. It was super helpful because he could give me real-time feedback. In my second lesson, they did not have radios, so it was harder to communicate during the lesson. It really is so fun to foil, and I highly recommend it to anyone who might want to give it a try. If you wanted to feel comfortable doing it, unless you regularly surge/skateboard, it would probably take 3-5 lessons before you are zooming around standing completely, so definitely factor that in when it comes to cost.

They sold me a board and have been super helpful and friendly along the way. I highly recommend them for lessons and sales of Fliteboards!
