My Experience:I've grown so much as both an actor and an individual through Melissa Thompson Esaia's 2-year Meisner program at Empowerhouse. She created a safe and supportive space where I could be vulnerable and explore parts of myself that I don't normally express in my daily life. Her feedback is thoughtful, empowering, and always focused on growth. She understands that we're learning and we're not here to be "good" and"perfect." We're here to show up, do the work and do the best we can, and trust in ourselves (and also have fun)! On days when the work felt thin, Melissa acknowledged my efforts and gave helpful feedback and suggestions for what I can try next time and how I can make the work feel more earned and strong. I appreciate Melissa's sensitivity and gentle approach to teaching! Melissa assigned scenes that stretched me beyond my comfort zone. I'm naturally soft, fun-loving and bubbly, so I really appreciated being given characters that were messy, complex, and emotionally rich. It helped me discover sides of myself I didn't even know I had. I've taken her teaching with me to my personal life, and that has helped me feel more free, present, and grounded. If you're an actor looking to take your craft to the next level, I highly recommend Empowerhouse Acting Studio!! I've also taken Improv Workshops with Otis Gates, and they were so much fun! It was my first time ever taking an improv class, so I was definitely nervous, but Otis brings a vibrant energy and created such a warm, welcoming, and joyful environment. His class helped me loosen up and feel more at ease in my body. I highly recommend Otis's Improv workshops regardless of your experience level. Whether you're trying improv for the first time or you're an experienced improv-er wanting to continue working on your craft, you'll definitely enjoy the class! The Breath and Body Workshop with DeAnna Driscoll was another amazing experience. Her class was incredibly grounding. We worked with breath and movement to connect more deeply with our bodies. I've always wanted to explore and expand my vocal range, and this workshop really helped with that. I was shocked to hear myself accessing a vocal range two octaves lower than I normally speak! This workshop was only 2 days, but those were 2 powerful days! I felt so grounded and present in my body, and have continued to use her teachings in my daily lives. I highly recommend the breath and body workshop! Overall, you're in excellent hands at Empowerhouse. Whether it's Meisner, improv, or breath and body workshop, the quality of the training and the heart behind it is unmatched. I can't recommend it enough! Logistics:The 2-year Meisner program consists of 6 sessions, each about 3 months long, all taught by Melissa. Classes meet 1-2 times a week for 3 hours each. You're paired with a scene partner every session, and outside rehearsal with classmates is essential for getting the most out of the work. The Improv Workshop runs for three days, with each class lasting three hours. The Breath and Body Workshop is two days long, also three hours per class. I was fortunate to enroll in a class led by the founder of the studio, Melissa Thompson Esaia. Melissa is a kind and supportive teacher, while also holding her students to the high standard required to grow as an actor. This class requires commitment and trust and if you are willing to make this commitment you will surprise yourself with the growth you will see as an actor. The program breaks the process of acting down to its simplest form and then builds on itself in beautiful and surprising ways. Each of the six sessions provides unique gifts that build on each other as the program progresses. Session 1 taught me what it means to be truly present and connected to a scene partner. Session 2 taught me how to build a life in my imagination. Session 3 taught me how to bridge the gap between myself and a character who is radically different. Session 4 taught me how to truly find the meaning behind a character's words. Session 5 taught me how to embody a character in both body and mind. Session 6 taught me how to bring it all together to collaborate with a partner in the truthful experience of living out a scene. The Business of Acting and Audition Class is a must for anyone ready to take their skills into the professional world. It was a wonderful class to take after the Meisner Program. I have also taken breath and movement classes that have allowed me to more deeply connect with my own body when working on stage and camera work. I have also participated in fun events like a 24 hour film festival that is a blast and improv jams that are welcoming of improvers of all levels. While I have taken classes at several of the other major Bay Area Theatre companies that offer them, the classes just don't compare to the dedicated attention I received at Empowerhouse. I came to Melissa wanting something more structured and rigorous without having to go back to school full time. Having now completed my 2 year meisner training, I can 100% whole heartedly recommend her to anyone (beginner or novice!) looking to take their acting seriously. I had taken some introductory courses, and didn't like how the classes (1) often felt like they were at the whim of the instructor, no syllabus or curricula, or (2) had an unprofessional environment, without any sort of code of conduct. From the first day, Melissa set clear expectations around practice, professionalism, and zero tolerance for harassment. I also loved the diversity of Melissa's classes. I had come from a previous environment of only older men, and felt really uncomfortable with how frequently I was put in a position where strangers were touching me. For the past two years, I have dedicated my time, and a majority of my life, to studying and learning the Meisner Technique, which included the Auditioning & Business of Acting class. The name Empowerhouse says it all. Melissa is a powerhouse educator and the Meisner training will empower you in ways that you can't even imagine. Over two years ago I was looking for acting training to face my fear of failure/rejection, which was the cause of my imposter syndrome at work (software engineering). I am forever grateful for Melissa. She played a key role in helping me believe in myself not only as an actor but in myself as a person. After checking out and auditing many acting studios and conservatories in the Bay Area, I have to say...Empowerhouse is a rare gem! I have been fortunate to take both Melissa's "Intro to Meisner Technique" and "Auditioning and the Business of Acting" classes.  There are teachers who can teach the craft of acting, and teachers who help you grow into a more expressive, full, and connected human being. Melissa does both! A huge part of acting is about building confidence, discovering that you're already enough and have all the tools. This is easier said than done, but Melissa has a way of developing this in you (it doesn't hurt that she has a background in counseling psychology!) That said, Melissa will definitely get you out of your comfort zone and challenge you to push your limits. Melissa is an incredibly keen and compassionate teacher. Her feedback is consistently accurate and digestible. She's very skilled at communicating, with great specificity, what needs improvement in your work and most importantly how to tackle it. Which is very, very useful given how abstract the whole concept of acting can be. Her notes are accessible and will get you to the next step, and the next, and the next. Acting is a very intimate and vulnerable art. Having a teacher that you absolutely trust has your best interest at heart and will compassionately guide you through the growing pains is absolutely crucial. I feel like it is first necessary to state that I have not attended Empowerhouse Acting Studio. My review is based upon my experience as a student of Melissa's at The Meisner Technique Studio in San Francisco, where I trained for two years. I feel very privileged and grateful to have learned from and grown with Melissa as my teacher. To my recollection, her feedback was always helpful and encouraging, and at times directly insightful on a personal level as well as a professional one. I found her to be an extremely supportive instructor who helped me grow further into myself and my artistic identity immensely during the time that I studied with her. I am not personally an advocate of cutting criticism or expressive disappointment when it comes to the creative process, especially within an educational context. And I always felt like Melissa was respectful of the inherent difficulty that goes into trying to create something out of nothing, as well as the courage that is required to put yourself out there as an actor. She often would say as much. In my opinion, trying is succeeding as far as this profession is concerned, and Melissa always made me feel safe to go for broke. I don't think that the value of that for a student-actor can be overstated. Finally, I found Melissa to be relatable as a fellow actor and human being, as well as a teacher, and I think that this sense of mutual respect and egalitarianism ultimately was a huge part of what made me feel comfortable, supported and understood by her. That is not to say that there was not a respectful hierarchy of teacher and student, but in my personal experience it did not extend beyond that into a sense of tyranny that I think we unfortunately often come up against in educational and professional (and even personal) settings. Melissa has a lot of experience and wisdom, but perhaps most of all a lot of love and respect for acting and actors. This sincere appreciation of the craft - and the challenges that come with it - translates into an incredibly powerful and permanent growing experience. read more

Acting is such a delicate process and it is crucial to have a proper teacher guiding you through your own vulnerability; it takes a special type of person to properly teach acting, Melissa was that person for me and I am forever grateful for what she taught me and the way she taught me. Melissa Thompson Esaia is an amazing teacher. I studied with her in the past at the Meisner Technique Studio and am excited for her as she starts her own acting studio. When she was my teacher, I had a lot of fun learning about the craft of acting and found that the journey in learning this craft was even more exciting and worthwhile. She loves teaching! She is dedicated, caring, detail-oriented, champions working hard and practice, is fair, patient with the process and inspires her students to work at their dream and think outside the box. Not only is she a teacher but she is involved in the Bay Area acting community herself. She is currently co-starring in a play where she is also directing and producing the project. In addition to this, she is involved in creating her own work. I got the chance to work on a few of her documentary projects in the past dealing with the treatment and inhumane capture of dolphins in Japan to interviewing families who had been affected by the Santa Rosa wildfires. Another project involved traveling to the Mexican border where we documented the stories of migrant people in pursuit of the American dream. In the seven years of knowing her, she was a person that made a huge impact on my life professionally and personally. I needed to prepare for college auditions and having Melissa be my private coach was one of the best decisions I made! Melissa is extremely intelligent and skilled. When I emailed her some of my top choices for my monologues she immediately read through each piece and gave feedback on what best seems appropriate to play. During our session, Melissa gave some of the best feedback for me to implement in my pieces. I was able to learn how to break down each line and she helped me better understand the characters I was playing. Through just one performance, Melissa is able to quickly see your strengths and weaknesses and through that, you learn how to become a better actor. I was really nervous about performing a classical piece, but Melissa helped me understand my monologue and thoroughly explained any questions I had. She's extremely skilled in classical pieces, so having her review my Shakespearean piece was so helpful for me. I took both in-person and online classes at the Empowerhouse Acting Studio. I think I had enough experience with Melissa and I can finally rate the Empowerhouse Acting Studio. A little background of myself, I'm from NYC, yes, the city that never sleeps and a place where you want to start your acting career. You will be wondering why I moved to the Bay Area. Well...there aren't that many teachers who care about your career. I audit a lot of classes and took them as well in NYC, such as HB, AWAW, NBPH. Don't get me wrong these are great studios too but honestly... your mentor MATTERS... saying all this, Melissa is a human being who KNOWS how to teach acting...she is grounded and brilliant at what she does. A lot of people think acting is easy but it is probably one of the hardest jobs out there because you have to understand and KNOW yourself. Acting is such a delicate process and you have to treat it like you are taking care of a child, your inner child. I believe to have a successful career in this industry, you need to have a proper teacher and Melissa is THAT person. She isn't just a teacher, she is a working actress as well, who is with one of the Top Agencies in the Bay Area like who doesn't want to learn from that kind of person. I'm truly grateful that I found Melissa and I can't wait to learn more from her. I'm 100% sure that she will get you to another level if you are willing to let go and open yourself. I feel extremely lucky to have studied with Melissa for my two-year training of the Meisner technique.
