I am confused. Yelp says the Mayan is closed. Mapquest says the Mayan is closed. But this past weekend I was there-- not as a trespasser- but as a dancer and reveler- with a whole lots of other movers and shakers. So what is the answer? How can we resolve the confusion? La Santa might be the answer. They are the club promoters who brought the Mayan back to life, at least for a night. And let me be the first person who takes it to Yelp, to say that this party was, lit!
I got there early because I wanted to get in, and move my feet as soon as I could. I did not fancy just standing in line waiting for my opportunity to thrive on the dance floor. But still I waited in the line. The doors opened at 1000 p.m. but I did not get in until like 1040. Being part of the line, however, is part of the experience. People meet in line, conversations are overheard in line, and in general, being in line at the club is an opportunity to experience the goers as they wait, which is really different, then goers move to music. I paidy 60 dollars to get in. I took a shot in the foot because I did not pay for the tickets on advance. Live, and learn, and get pre-tickets, as well as diapers before they are needed.
A La Santa party at the Mayan is a full blown event. I have been to clubs in my life, not many, it was never my go to option, but here I saw club theatrics that were stale in theory but lively in practice. For instance, I guy made it rain. He was in a table, I guess they cost a lot of money to book. And he took out this wad of cash, which I saw were all singles. And he threw the cash into the air, but it did not go far. He was in the first floor, he did not have the height to make the cash flow with the winds. So instead it fell, not like confetti, but like sad streamers who did not fly to the air. At first I thought it was monopoly money, it is not until I saw it on the floor that I understood what it meant. I picked a few dolllars up so I could say that I did. I did not know that they were meant to be left on the ground. Eventually, I saw someone pick them up in a bucket, but not the ones in the dance floor just the ones near the viciinty of the table.
Being in a room with a lot of people dancing, actual confetti falling, smoke guns being used, lasers being strong and flirty and everywhere, took me from my mind into the moment. The spectacle around me could not be ignored, of course, but more importantly it was immersive. I was no longer at a club trying to have a good time, the club had infused me with a good time. And for anyone trying to escape the woe of their daily grind, this kind of moment is worth more than 60 dollars, but still, it cannot be purchased with intent, some money has to be spent.
I think my favorite moments came when masked performers danced and used gun smokes, and their own light-up costumes, to make the party, a bouncing blast. As I look back at the videos, I realize that the noise and spectacle of the moment was evident and communicative just with the videos. I am not sure if I am reliving the fun, or, if the videos communicate the fun anew. THe difference being that a new person, would know the fun to be had, as I do, regardless of whether they were there or not. I guess, to truly remember the fun, through out your whole body and chest you had to be there. The videos still communicate the romp though, me thinks.
The drag of the night were the long lines to get a drink. I once watched a tv show where the newly appointed king of hell made all tortures singular: wait in line, like in the DMV, and when one gets to the front, the line starts a new. The bar lines made me think of that. Unlike the line to get in, these lines were clearer barrier to a good time, because they were like an hour long, with no clear shape or direction. They were just long and tedious. And if one likes to sip, then liquor goes fast, but the line does not. So I suggest you act accordingly or accept that drinks will be a wait that requires more than patience, but acceptance.
There were a lot of people to see too. I am sure that in the sea of party goes any person will find someone that they find fun to hangout with or imagine how it would be fun if they hang out, and then some. read more
