The tiny trailer…read morethat Morty has set up at 43rd and Stateline has barely enough room for a person, let alone a functioning kitchen, but it is pumping out some mighty tasty offerings. Morty not only welcomed me, but asked my name, what I did for a living, and how satisfied I was with my job within the first minute of meeting. A natural at conversation and customer service skills - my new best friend that I had never met. While he prepared my dogs, I asked him about the "ripper" sauce that is on the menu. Not only did I get a sample of his handmade recipe, but the origin story of how he discovered it while serving in the military in Germany. It was a sweet / tangy mustard and onion concoction that I will definitely order on my next trip if it's available on his rotating menu at that time. My Chicago Dog and Chili Cheese Dogs were perfection. The Chicago Dog had all the proper fresh ingredients with a Vienna Beef dog and a soft poppy seed bun. With one bite I was transported back to my frequent Chicago Dog lunches when living in Chicago almost 30 years ago. The Chili cheese dog was just as magical with a creamy warm cheese sauce between the soft bun and dog and then covered in a no-bean saucy meat chili...just as God intended. Morty's is only open 7 hours a week - 11:00am - 1:20pm W, TH & FR, so plan accordingly and go meet my new best friend and get a couple of life's simple all-American pleasures.

We tried the Chicago dog (best hotdog I've ever had), chili dog special (also best hotdog I've ever had) and their stadium dog which I didn't get a photo of because we ate them too fast. This is the real deal! Go get yourself some dogs!!

The bartender I've had both times has been so very helpful- he remembered me from my first time in, with my mom instead of my husband, and in quite a friendly way asked how she was doing and if she'd be coming back. [She would, if it wasn't something like a seven hour drive for her to get there.] He was completely willing to answer my MANY questions about the food and drink menu. They premix their cocktails and he was happy to let me try a sip of the ones that interested me. Speaking of.... They're quite ingenious! While cucumber flavor in a drink is hardly revolutionary, red bell pepper IS- and you can taste it! None of them were to my particular liking, but to be honest, I am a bit of a picky eater. He had great patience with me on modifications to my burger- and, again, remembered that I didn't want the sauce. This is honestly a cool little place with a super chill vibe. I AM sad that for a place with a good patio, dogs aren't allowed.... But such is life, I suppose.

Fritz's takes a blue ribbon for its $3 made and smoked in-house hot dog. Free sauerkraut, mustard, Dijon, BBQ sauce, and ketchup are available at the condiment table and other toppings are available for purchase, I added jalapeños and slivered onions for $. A masterpiece on a soft but durable bun. I also bought a $5 pint of sausage "burnt ends" that I used ate plain and mixed into a scrambled egg dish. The $8 whole smoked chicken was my wife and I's favorite chicken we've ever had. I'm sad that in Fritz's has been in operation 99 years and that I have never been in before this weekend. If you buy rotisserie chickens from the store, stop it and head to Fritz's.

While during most of the year, they do sell lunch, that's just not why most people go to Fritz's. They're renowned for their smoked meats. Around holidays they sell smoked turkeys, gravy, and- most importantly- their 3 sausage stuffing, which is a must for our holiday meals. It is delicious! It can get busy some mornings with people picking up, but I always see people getting helped fast, the line goes quickly. Pro tip: you don't have to be there right in the morning. Wait a couple hours and come in, you'll be fine. Year round, we're a fan of their breakfast burrito mix of meats- just cook it up with eggs and you have yourself a filling meal. Then there's the dog bones.... Altogether, this is a simple and unassuming place, a bit old fashioned, but very much solid.

My son & I wanted to try a hot dog spot & Ding Dong Dogs came up. The cashier was pretty chill. We later found out that she was new. She was very informative though. You can get your hot dog grilled, fried, off of the roller grilled, or boiled. Also they have gluten free buns and impossible hot dogs so bring your friends with dietary differences. We got several hot dogs and sides. The 50/50 was seasoned well enough that I didn't even need condiments. I really enjoyed the chili though and the mac and cheese. Everything was so delicious. We'll be back.

They happened to be mopping with a strong ammonia odor, so that set the stage a bit awkwardly as we navigated our first time in. There's no kids menu (which is fine, it's by a college campus so likely nomt their demographic) but we got an original one with nothing on it and tots. As another reviewer mentioned, apparently you get the choice of grilled, fried, boiled, or off the roller -- we weren't asked and ended up with grilled. The tots were phenomenal, some of the best I've had, and I kept poaching them when she wasn't looking. I hope the biz owners know my intentions are very much in a spirit of offering constructive feedback, with hopes of coming back in, and not malicious at all here. Here are a few more things that were off that are worth calling out: -Vibes were a bit weird inside. The ammonia smell, tables dirty. My daughter went to get a water and saw cups and asked me if she could grab one, I gave a thumbs up from across the room -- turned out to be wine glasses! So she's loading up waters for the table in wine glasses, and a minor miracle we didn't end up breaking one. Kind of random to be set by the fountain machine. -The drinking fountain was out of order and it was pretty dirty back by the bathroom -Service was neutral at best, not really walking us thru anything and sort of half-hearted about it -The dog was kinda small for seven bucks What was fun though was the foosball table, so that's a cool addition. Feels very college towny across the board in here. I'll keep with the idea of supporting a new neighborhood spot, but a lukewarm first impression across the board.
