What a fun place! There are so many things that you can get for crafting. Their donations and everything is priced very reasonably. I was able to get a couple books on knitting for $.75 apiece. They also have tons of material lots of yarn, and also found the size of knitting needles I needed to make a Christmas present. They have everything that you could imagine for crafting paper, collages, buttons, ribbons and stencils. I probably missed a lot of stuff but it's a great store and I recommended highly. read more

Had a nice person on the phone checking to see if they had the supply I was looking for. All of a sudden another voice takes over the phone and tells me she doesn't know if they have the item and I have to come in the store to see for myself. I live 30 mins away and told her I wanted to check before I made the trip; asked her if they had the item. She quickly said no and I would have to come in. Had a horrible encounter in this store two months ago when one of the volunteers started harassing me because she said she hated "DICKERING". I felt embarrassed by her rudeness and volatility. It was borderline aggression. No thanks. Ive been to better stores with far less angry volunteers, dont waste your time. read more

The Legacy is AWESOME! When I walk in I feel a berst of joy and like I am immediately at home. There are so many things for a great price, there are things for 10c that are still in great condition! There are a variety of rainbows to choose from, it's hard to not want to buy it all! I could spend my whole day in The Legacy. It is warm, bright and fun!! This a great place to find vintage fabrics, craft and sewing supplies, and similar items gently used or in like new condition. The prices can't be beat. The store is over stacked and can be difficult to move around in when there are multiple shoppers or for anyone with mobility issues. I do not recommend bringing small children along with you when you shop here. I've noticed over the years the volunteers tend to be snarky, and I find it's good to take it with a grain of salt. read more

I love the community the Legacy serves-costume makers, established knitters, artists. It's a great place for inexpensive art supplies or if your kids are unsure they'll stick with a craft, and you want to keep investment costs down! This is a crafter/sewing Mecca. Generally very crammed with both people and with inventory.

I checked The Legacy website, Facebook page and called the phone # of record. There was no message or indication that the shop would not be open on 5-22-23. I had a number of boxes of quality fabric (wool, silk, upholstery fabric etc) as well as numerous craft supplies. I drove from Southern Marin to donate these items. When I arrived there was a sign on the door that the shop was closed for volunteers appreciation luncheon. I again checked the FB page, website and phone. No message to indicate they were not accepting donations. Again I drove up to Sebastopol from Mill Valley. A sign outside the shop read that they were not accepting donations because their storage area was full and they had no room. I was furious. I told them of my fruitless drives two consecutive days. The woman said "Well, there was a sign on the door" regarding Monday. I told her "I couldn't read a sign on the door from Mill Valley". I said they should use the website and/or Facebook to communicate important updates. She just shrugged and said "Have a nice day". Don't bother shopping there or donating, assuming they ever accept donations. I will tell all My quilting, sewing and crafting friends not to bother will this business. read more

So. Much. Yarn. It is a crocheters paradise, and a lot of the stuff is pretty old or vintage which is pretty cool. They have a drawer tower with a bunch of crochet hooks and knitting needles and looms and tapestry needles, basically everything you'd need for super cheap. Great idea, but I was expecting a better shopping experience....the store is extremely small, crammed with boxes of crafts, so if you're claustrophobic you're going to have problems here. Best to go when they first open or near closing. I'm a quilter and I found most of the cotton fabric unappealing. They weigh it and charge you $2 a pound. They did have a great box of postcards near the front for 10 cents each. Lots of crafting materials and books, so it's worth a look if you can stand to squeeze in. A nice lady helped me at the counter because I was behind a person making a massive purchase, so I thank them for that. read more

This is a great spot to browse for the sewing and crafting supplies you didn't even know you needed until you happily grabbed them up! Lots of fabric, beads, pattern books, lace, transfers.. the list goes on and on. I spotted what looked like a ceramic peacock high on a shelf and asked about it. The helpful staff lady was curious and climbed on a chair to get it down for me and we all admired it. It's now shining brightly in my sunny window where the blues and greens are gorgeous. This is a great place to find good deals on sewing and craft items. I absolutely love places like this, with nooks and crannies and fun stuff to pick through-you never know what you'll find! Go with lots of time to look and dig in their boxes. As a first timer, the first impression I had could have been better. I'm taking one star off for the grumpy lady at the register. Smile and be friendly-if people ask questions it's because they don't know..I'll take another star off for the red ribbon I bought...it was all rolled up in a small bag and I didn't even think to open, unroll and check it but it had a 10" sharpie marker streak down the middle. Now, I would have bought it anyway because I can work around it for this project but it's the principle...and EVEN though it was cheap, whom ever rolled it up and put it in there should have either cut it out or made note of it. That's just shady! I WILL go back and I definitely recommend a trip if you've never been. I'm hoping they were just having a bad day and my next review will be a 5 star!! read more

I love this place. I knew from reading the description that I would get lost in this crafters mecca, so I made sure to visit 45 minutes before they were closing. I needed fabric to make curtains for my new apartment and was hopeful that I might find something. I found two actual curtains (time savings!), a piece of lace fabric for another project, took stock of all the wonderful supplies they have there, and I even made a few friends! There are supplies for sewing, embroidery, cross stitch, scrap booking, knitting/crocheting, weaving, and so much more. I love that they are an all donations locations and their proceeds go to the Sebastopol Senior Center. How fitting! Everyone that works there is incredibly nice and helpful. I will definitely be back. They have half price days on the 2nd and 4th Fridays but their prices are so low, that everyday is a sale, really. read more

First time as a shopper, all other visits have been as donating. Lots of stuff, as organized as possible considering all the 'stuff' in there. I easily found the yarn I needed (organized well by color), found trim very neatly wrapped on cardboard & I needed bells and had to ask for help. The nice lady working took me straight to a drawer labeled bells...perfect. The inventory is going to vary and you may or may not find what you need...but you will probably find something else :) I loved seeing teenagers in there buying art supplies and fabric. Also I liked at the register they have a sign inviting young people to ask for a free sewing kit. I have heard and read people complain about the staff/volunteers here but I have only had pleasant experiences with the people behind the counter & the people receiving donations. read more

Mixed feelings about this store that I have been shopping at for many years now. When they relocated and raised their prices, shopping there has been kind of a drag. The whole joy was that the craft and sewing items that you needed were affordable, so you could buy a lot. NOW I buy about 1/3 of what I used to and seem to find what I need at Joann's instead. Especially since they started putting ribbon into bags (so you can't see how many feet/yards are in the bag) or making it for sale by the wound display spools. What a drag! How about if you put the ribbon for sale in the way that it is donated to the store??? I never, ever buy ribbon in the store any more and I used to buy several dozen yards every month. The fabric is scrunch-stacked in a way that makes it very difficult to see without taking everything off the shelves which is exhausting and messy. You can do better! Some of the volunteers/employees at the register don't seem to know what they are doing, make mistakes, and can be arrogant=also a drag. read more

When my wife died unexpectantly recently, I was unsure of what to do with her vast collection of fabric and sewing notions, sewing machine and Serger and other sewing items. I was referred to the store by my wife's sewing machine dealer and everybody at the store were wonderful to deal with. Over the period of three months I brought 9 SUV loads of material, fabrics, sewing notions, batting and other supplies to the store once a week plus the sewing machine and Serger. Since I had so much to donate, I called ahead and made sure they could take the loads I brought up each time. I particularly loved the fact that the store proceeds go towards the Sebastopol Senior Center. Only downside was my wife never got to browse the store, but if she had I would have had more than 9 SUV loads to donate read more

This place is AWESOME! Every kind of fabric you can think of for $1/lb!? Yes! Tons of yarn in every shade of every color and for every type of needlework? Yes! Crafting supplies up the wazoo? Yes! Other fabulous things and discoveries? YES! And all the proceeds go to benefit the Sebastopol Senior Center. Don't get me started on their annual Holiday Store...I spent $135 over the course of their last week with everything 50% off and got a fully decorated, fiber optic Christmas tree and cleaned them out of their linens (huge damask tablecloth with four matching napkins for $15!). My review is based on my experience DONATING not shopping. I called the store twice before loading my car full of fabric and sewing/crafting supplies. I was told "yes, we take this, and yes, we take that" to every question I asked so I scheduled an appointment for my donation. Never once was I told "We don't take scraps" because my question would have been "What constitutes scraps for your purposes?". Unfortunately my donation time was during a very hot part of the day but I was unprepared for the crankiness i encountered upon arrival. Two people came out to my car and seemed very u pleased about the amount of bags (even though I forewarned them when I made the appointment). Unfortunately I pulled a muscle in my right arm and was unable to left anything requiring both hands. When I apologized for my injury the man looked at me and said "Aaaaauuuuf course" because I needed help. I apologizes but did as much caring as I could physically manage. They eagerly took the 2 boxes of quilting pattern and sewing books. They eagerly took the large quilting hoops and directed one of the staff to "put a $20 sticker on These!" Then they started picking apart the bags of fabric and they only took a few select pieces. They said over and over "We don't take scraps". Now to be fair, they do have limited space, but to be fair to me they rejected anything that had a piece cut out of it, some small (ok I get that) but also some half yards or MORE. I was left with 6 yards of linen, single yards of other various garment fabric (clean, current, quality), and lots of home dec. In the end they took 6 of the 13 bags I brought. He then looked at me and said "Sorry, I don't want this and Goodwill won't take it, but feel free to use the dumpster at the end of the lot. If anybody gives you a bad time just tell them John from Legacy said it was ok". Not even a thank you! I left there feeling sorry for burdening them with my donations! I drove down to the dumpster and threw in 2 bags of stabilizer scraps - usable for embroidery hoops, I just have too much. Then a lady stuck her head out of the McDonalds drive threw window and screamed her head off at me for using their dumpster. I tried to explain what John had said and it just made her yell louder so I left. I drove I to the Goodwill donation center and asked if they took fabric. They said SURE and offered to unload the remaining bags. The only reason I offer Legacy 1star is because I support what they are doing for the community. I won't go back nor will I subject any of my friends to the rudeness I encountered so I will recommend my friends donate elsewhere. Maybe it was the heat....but.... read more

Previously owned, gently used and new craft supplies, specializing in needle craft (sewing, knitting, rug hooking, embroidery, bolts of fabric, buttons, etc.). It's a bit of a jumble at first glance, but everything actually is very well organized and the staff can help you find anything. Prices are great, for example, knitting needles for a dollar. They are entirely supplied by donations so the selection changes all the time. If you need something very specific to complete a project, this isn't the place. But to build up your stash, find a selection of fabrics for your next quilt, and so on, this is a great source. My mother-in-law donates her unused craft supplies here--roving, yarn, patterns, crochet hooks, lace, etc.. I think many ladies in our town do the same when they clean out their sewing rooms, yarn stashes and sew on (couldn't resist that one). I love that this keeps things from being thrown out, and wish this type of store existed in every community. It's a great place! read more

It is a thrift store without furniture, clothing, kitchen ware, etc. We just carry yarns, fabric, some art and craft materials, patterns and books. We also have vintage lace and handwork. Our profits benefit the Sebastopol Senior Center. One of our goals is to keep the store well organized and to present the merchandise in the nicest way we can. You will find spinning wheels, raw wool, quilting fabrics and tools, sewing equipment and lots of books! People from all over the Bay Area come here to seek treasures!
